Zero hours

The nephew of someone Bev works with got a job with MacDonalds.
He turned up for his first shift last Monday & after half an hour was sent home as there was no work left for him to do, he received one hours pay for that day, he is scheduled to work four days a week & so far has only worked half an hour on each day, it costs him ?4.80 in bus fares to get to & from work & is only receiving ?6.50 per day.
To say the kid is pissed off is an understatement, how can zero hours contracts be fair?

Clueless in most things
We used to use agency staff and whilst we gave a rough estimate to their time use, if there was no work they would go home early. Great for the employer but not so much for the employee.

The companies got together and realised by largely cutting out the agencies they could pay no more than the basic minimum wage, no agency fees but still have the flexibility of being able to send people home based on their time of attendance vs workload. They called this arrangement zero hours contracts.

For the government it looks good as even by 30 minutes a week, they can claim "more people than ever are in work" However there is no point in putting up the minimum wage to a hourly living wage if all you are getting is an hour.

Personally I'd like them outlawed.

I'm sure I read somewhere that they are trying to stop zero hour contracts, you can see why people just claim the dole at least then they know how much there getting.
I'm sure McDonald's are ment to be "Investors in people" so this won't look good on them!

Investors in people is a load of bollocks, HMP Wakefield has a bronze award despite the assessors being told of several cases of management bullying & discrimination.

I agree investors in people is a joke the company I used to work for had it at one time and carefully picked the people the assessor spoke to

McDonalds outlets are franchised so, while the business model is controlled centrally, the individual owners set their own employment rules and policies.

When I worked for the SPS there was an agreement in place that we were credited with a minimum of 3 hours if we were sent home. We weren't subject to zero hours contracts though

I was one of the people chosen to speak, they didn't pay a blind bit of notice to what I said, I know at least three other people who spoke to them who had grievances.

Every year we get an online survey, supposed to be anonymous, every year I end it by putting my name/establishment/contact number with an invite for them to contact me, so far they haven't contacted me.

Zero hours. ......

All our agency are on zero hour contracts, really feel for them, esp as we have a 200% turnover of them a year, they only have to spend to long in the toilet and you might not see them back next day, some have been there over a year and no sign of a full time position.

Feckin disgusting the way the company treats them. .....

good looking AND modest
My eldest is a bloody hard worker and is simply pig sick of having to work for agency's that just use and abuse everyone they employ, he wont go onto a zero hour contract though as he sees far too many people ruined by them, as they are unable to answer the questions the "dole/benefit monkeys" asks them, and they are then penalised for "not working" even after explaining there IS NO WORK that week or day!! it just gets to the point people give up looking and just start lying and so it goes on!!:dunno:
