Which country, of Spain or Portugal, would you emigrate to?

No rush like...

Depends where. They both have good and bad. Spain tends to be a more chav filled hell, hence why I stopped visiting their coastal resorts around 15 years ago. They are very similar though. Portugal is generally west facing, so you get great sunsets and the afternoon sun.

If I had enough £ to go to either, then I would go to neither, & move to Cyprus instead.

Location location location

enjoy, or should I say disfrutar de

Most prob Spain, but away from the UK immigrant areas sucas Benidorm, Alicante, Costa del whatever.

Move about 30kms inland, find the real Spain, but still be close enough to the Med.

We have no intention of going to a tourist area. Ideally another place in the sticks, but foreign. This is a three year plan anyway. We've realised that we could have somewhere much nicer for the same value as our house with better weather.
I've checked the CIA World Factbook, which is always a good source of info :)

Cyprus has gone downhill big tome since they joined the EEC - very expensive now, many parts over developed IMHO. Still a pretty nice venue in some places, although the Brits over there are being clobbered on the ? and property market is dead. Seriously considered building a retirement place over there 6 years ago, glad I didn't.

Just got back from touring Italy from the top to Rome, loved the people, the countryside and the towns. didn't visit anywhere that said 'I want to live here' though.

No idea on spain or Portugal though.@tu*

Be very, very careful if your income is paid in ? and you live in Eurozone. Many are hurting very badly.

It's all down to personal preference, I love Portugal & there are parts of Spain that I like but as for living there I'm not too sure about, the only place I could definitely say I would emigrate to is Gibraltar, not to everyone's taste I know but that's just me.

Spain is less parochial than Portugal, but for me.. Italy every time

Far more laid back, plod are, in general, great.. Local govt easy to get on with, and unlike Spain, you make the smallest effort to join in the local community ( and nope, I canna speak barely a sentence of Italian so I aint talking about language ) and you will be welcomed with open arms..
However, avoid the whole area of Rome ( unless of course you have designs on either being robbed blind or you are 'connected' and intend being the next gangster there )

Down to Terni is fine, and past say, the Isernia area are all fantastico ! @tu*

Worked in Rome for about 18months, found it to be just like any other city apart from taking the usual precautions with regards camera/jewellery/etc the dons are very much running the city but I never had a problem at all with any I met.

you are right about making an effort with the community though, my very rough Italian opened so many doors and made people want to help, their hospitality is awesome.

My bro moved to Spain a few years ago and loves it. My mate has a house in Italy and will retire there. I like Portugal and would consider moving there if I had the money and my health was better.

Portugal for me, just returned. Natives are very friendly and laid back, food exceptional - all fresh, nothing processed, seafood everywhere.

Trouble with Portugal nowadays is the banditry !

A whole raft of South American AND Moroccan bad guys are currently using Portugal as a 'get in to Europe' point

While we was in Spain earlier this year it was almost daily on the tv that another gang had been nailed as they entered Spain via the pork and cheese borders
