Top French Finale The Aim For Sykes And Baz
WSBK, Magny-Cours, France, 2 October 2012
Race winners in the 2012 SBK season already, Tom Sykes and Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) each have their own aims at the final round of the SBK seasons, to be held at Loris?s home track in France

Sykes has scored three wins in 2012 so far, the most recent in race one last time out in Portugal, and he will be aiming for more of the same to try and catch the championship leader Max Biaggi. Tom is in second place overall, 30.5 points behind the Italian rider, with only two points scoring races left.

A maximum of 50 points is available for any rider who wins both Magny-Cours races. For Sykes the pre-event goal is to post the two strongest raceday results possible by finding the best machine set-up for each race, and then see what other developments occur.

In reality Sykes has two main jobs ahead of him on raceday. The first is catching and passing Biaggi on points if things go his way but he also has to keep ahead of third place rider Marco Melandri, who is a narrow eight points behind Tom.

For Baz, who like Sykes has recently re-signed for the 2013 season with the Kawasaki Racing Team, two forthcoming races in his native France are particular highlights. The Silverstone race winner is keen to take his first top five finishes in fully dry conditions this weekend ? if the weather co-operates during early October in the centre of France. Baz, still a teenager, is now 12th overall in the rankings, after only joining the series at the fifth round.

Team Pedercini Kawasaki SBK riders David Salom and Alexander Lundh will be looking for their best season results at the final round of the 2012 season, with Salom hoping for ninth or better and Lundh looking for any finish better than 14th.

In the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup Team Pedercini Kawasaki rider Bryan Staring is joined by Leandro Mercado once more. Staring is still in with an outside chance of the title itself, as he is 22 points from the leader and 19 points behind second place. He has won three races on his relatively standard Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R in 2012 and must take another win to be in with any chance of the title this time around. Current MRS Kawasaki Superstock 1000 rider Jeremy Guarnoni has been no stranger to podium finishes this year and a final top three at his home race would be a pleasing finish for the young French rider.

Tom Sykes: ?I am looking forward to getting back on my ZX-10R. I am excited to go to Magny Cours as it is a race that has shown some potential for us in the past and the way we have the bike working now is good. I lam looking to go there and do our usual thing. Honestly, I am also looking for a little bit of luck. I am second in the championship, 30.5 points from the leader, so we need a certain aspect of luck to help us out. But, ultimately, it can happen. It happened to me in race two last week and in the last four races for Melandri. So I hope that we can put in two strong races and come out one place better. We are second in the championship and if I had been offered that at the beginning of the year, I am sure myself and the whole team would have accepted it. We are here now and we know what we can achieve. No matter what, if we finish top three we will have had a very, very good year. We are still mathematically able to win the championship so I think we should try to do something about it. Other people have made mistakes but at the end of the day everyone has had the same opportunities as us. To be lying second is a good achievement. It is where we really are. We have learned a lot this year and we have had to work hard at some events just because we are still learning. We have come from a long way back, have been winning races and challenging for race wins and I am sure next year we will be even stronger.?

Loris Baz: ?Racing in France in front of the French fans is always very cool. But on track we will be trying to do the same as at every round. I hope to score a top five in the dry and if it is dry it will be better for us. I like Magny-Cours, it is a very nice track, and I did the Bol D?Or there. I won the Superstock 600 Championship there and I have some good memories, so I hope to have another good memory. I just want to find a good set-up on Friday, work towards the race. We were not so far from the top five in Portimao so we are getting there. A few races ago a top seven in the dry was a little dream, but now we have done that two times.?

Honda's Superbike duo head for season finale

Jonathan Rea and Hiroshi Aoyama will line up for the final round of the 2012 World Superbike championship this weekend (5-7 October) at Magny-Cours in France, rounding out the 25th year of the world?s foremost production motorcycle race series.

The Honda World Superbike duo are out of contention in the title race this season but both are looking to finish the season in style with two good races at the 4.411km circuit, which lies just 10km south of Nevers in central France.

Rea has enjoyed mixed fortunes at Magny-Cours, finishing on the podium in his first World Superbike visit in 2009. However, the 25-year-old from Northern Ireland struggled with a wrist injury the following season. He started from pole position for last year?s races but a crash in race one and a technical problem in race two prevented Rea from converting his advantage.

For the final time this season, Hiroshi Aoyama, must learn a new circuit but the Japanese rider is looking forward to finishing his time with the Honda World Superbike Team on a positive note.

Jonathan Rea

I?m really looking forward to going to Magny-Cours this weekend and trying to finish this season off in style. We often get some variable weather at this race, with pretty cold mornings, but it would be really nice to avoid another race that?s dictated by conditions like we?ve had a few times this year, including race one at Portimao. It?s especially frustrating when we?ve got the bike working well like we did there. I really like the Magny-Cours circuit though and I hope to have a couple of good races to complete the amazing journey that I?ve been on these last few weeks. It?s not just the last few weeks, actually ? 2012 has been an unbelievable year for me, both professionally and personally. I?d like to get it finished properly and then get home to recharge the batteries and get myself motivated again to start pre-season testing and prepare for 2013.

Hiroshi Aoyama

I?m looking forward to learning another new track at Magny-Cours this week. I have looked at some videos of previous races and, although it?s never easy, the circuit doesn?t look as difficult to learn as Portimao. I was able to enjoy that track by the end of the weekend, so I hope to do the same at Magny-Cours. I will try my best as usual but, as these will be my last races with the Ten Kate Honda team, I hope even more to make some good results this weekend.

Ronald ten Kate ? team manager

While some might be looking back at the 2012 season, I can confirm we are firmly focused on looking ahead to 2013 with the exciting new line-up in both Superbike and Supersport that we announced at Portimao. In the meantime, there are two races at Magny-Cours to deal with and, for a start, we hope that the weekend will be completely dry. Magny-Cours brings some good memories for us because we have won both races and, more importantly, championships there. We?re not fighting for any titles this time, but we?ll give everything again for the best possible results and see if we can maybe gain a place in the final standings. This weekend also marks the last outing with the team for Hiroshi. It would be nice to finish the season on a high but, unfortunately he has to learn another new circuit, so it won?t be easy for him. While this season hasn?t exactly brought everything we were aiming for, it has been a pleasure working with Hiroshi and we wish him every success both this weekend and for the future.

Season finale promises fireworks for BMW Motorrad Motorsport

On Sunday 7 October, the 2012 Superbike World Championship comes to an end, with the final two races of the year taking place at the Circuit de Nevers in France. Whatever happens at the 4.441 km ?Magny-Cours? racetrack, everyone is in agreement that this year?s championship has been one of the best ever, with thrilling entertainment, amazing skill and high drama on offer ever since the 2012 series kicked off almost nine months ago in Australia.

With the title race still to be decided ? and possibly even going down to the very last race ? Superbike fans the world over have been enthralled by the multitude of track battles and close racing provided all year, where the established stars of WSBK have been taken on, and often beaten, by the ?young guns?, hoping to make a name for themselves in what has undoubtedly been the best racing series on the planet this year.

From a BMW Motorrad Motorsport perspective, 2012 has been a tremendous success, with 15 podiums achieved (including six wins) and 394 points awarded to date in the Manufacturers? Championship. Even with two races still to run, this is an amazing improvement over 2011, where just three podiums were recorded and 275 points the total in last year?s Manufacturers? Championship.

Statistics don?t tell the whole story of course, as Marco Melandri can testify. The amazing Italian has fought hard in his debut year for BMW Motorrad Motorsport, enjoying victories, rostrums and fastest laps, but also finding himself in the gravel trap and at times, also in the medical centre. Always a hard racer and undoubtedly exciting to watch on his S 1000 RR, no one can accuse Melandri of playing it safe in his 2012 championship campaign.

Even with this final round approaching, Marco is focussing on returning to winning ways after four races without scoring any points. He has been in and out of hospital following his heavy crash in the first race at Portim?o two weeks ago, and while he has no internal injuries, he does have cracked ribs and painful contusions on his back, which may well present a challenge to his being able to ride his RR at 100 per cent at the French circuit where he enjoyed a double podium last year. However expect the Italian to ignore the pain and give it everything as he aims to get back on top of the rostrum again.

?I spent the time since Portugal back home taking a rest and recovering from my injury. It still hurts, but I am feeling better with every day and now I cannot wait to head to Magny-Cours,? said Marco. ?The last two race Sundays were difficult, but we left them behind us and are motivated as always to fight. For sure the final round of the season will not be an easy one as the top is closely fought. For us it is important to work hard from the first day on in order to best prepare for the races.

?I like the Magny-Cours circuit. Last year I raced there for the first time and had two very good races. It is a difficult but interesting circuit which offers a combination of everything. When I first rode there, it took me some time to find the best way of braking for the slow corners, but then I found a good feeling and was riding pretty fast. I also like it because the surface is very smooth. I had a lot of fun there last year and that is my target for this year, too. I want to enjoy the final round and finish the season with the best possible performance and the best possible results.?

This is exactly what team-mate Leon Haslam will be trying to do, as he contests his final race weekend for BMW Motorrad Motorsport. It has been a tough year for Leon, right from the very first race weekend, where he fractured his right femur after a heavy crash in practice. Dogged by injury throughout the year ? and at the receiving end of more than his fair share of bad luck ? Haslam has been a true pro, braving the pain barrier to put in some impressive performances and working extremely hard for his team throughout what will be remembered as a challenging season.

?The recent race weekends have been difficult for me so hopefully now my luck will change,? he said. ?I know we?ve had the pace to win races over the last three or four rounds. It is my final race weekend for BMW Motorrad so for sure I want to finish strong and if possible with a win. We will give 110 per cent, as usual. The Magny-Cours round is always late on in the season so it is normally pretty cold. The track has a lot of hairpins and tight corners but it also has a very fast back straight. It is quite technical and the weather is always a key factor there because the temperatures are often low.?

For Head of Race Operations, Andrea Dosoli, it is important for the team to end this year on a high, especially after such a rollercoaster ride of a season:

?At Magny-Cours, the best ever season for BMW Motorrad Motorsport will come to an end,? he said. ?It has been an amazing and difficult championship with ups and downs. Our clear target is to finish it with great races and the best possible results. The racetrack is a technical one and lacks a natural riding rhythm. It is a combination of everything: fast and slow corners, one of the slowest hairpins, chicanes and a fast straight. It will be demanding for the riders and difficult for the team to find the best set-up. Another characteristic is its smooth surface, which is sensitive to the weather conditions and temperatures. Considering how quickly the weather could change at this time of the year, this could be a key factor, so we must be ready for any conditions.

?Marco is facing the most difficult time of the season; he is working very hard to recover from the injury he suffered in Portim?o. We are confident that he will be fit and ready to fight with the top guys. He is very strong and this difficult time will give him extra motivation. He likes Magny-Cours, where last year he narrowly missed out on two victories by just a few seconds. All the team is supporting him. For Leon, Magny-Cours will be his last race with BMW Motorrad Motorsport. We?ve enjoyed our time together and we really would like to part ways with an important result. We all know what he is capable of achieving and he has nice memories from Magny-Cours where he got a fantastic podium last year. We all are confident that he will be able to fight for the podium again and the whole team will work hard to help him in achieving this target.?

Superbike face-off at Magny-Cours for Biaggi, Sykes and Melandri

Three riders and three different manufacturers will be facing off on Sunday in the final showdown at Magny-Cours for the 2012 eni FIM Superbike World Championship titles. Not for the first time will the French circuit play host to the championship's grand finale, which this time sees two Italians, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) and Marco Melandri (BMW Motorad Motorsport) and a British rider, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), currently second in the standings, mathematically still in with a chance of winning.

The last round in Portugal, which produced a number of surprises and upsets, saw Max Biaggi gain ground on his rivals and the 41-year-old from Rome now has 347 points, against 316.5 for Sykes and 308.5 for Melandri. The 30 year-old from Ravenna was involved in a crash that eliminated him from race 1 and he cracked a couple of ribs in the process, but since then he has embarked on an intensive recovery programme in order not to miss out on the final encounter.
The current standings show that Biaggi can easily win the sixth world title in his career, his second in Superbike, with just two sixth places. Even if Sykes takes a double win (50 points), Biaggi just needs 20 to take the title. Judging from his previous form there, the title is within easy reach: he has raced eight times at Magny-Cours and has always finished in the top 6, with four podiums to his name and a win in 2010 when he got the better of Cal Crutchlow in a ferocious duel after he had already clinched the title.

Tom Sykes on the other hand has never finished higher than eighth, with three crashes to his name. The Kawasaki has improved massively throughout the season however and Sykes has taken three of his four race victories in 2012. Marco Melandri only raced at Magny-Cours last season, twice finishing runner-up after two terrific recoveries.
In twenty-five editions of the Superbike World Championship this will be the 15th time the title is assigned at the final round. Magny-Cours has been decisive on three occasions: in 1991 Texan Doug Polen took his first title with three rounds remaining, while in both 2004 and 2007 the championship went right down to the wire, with Britain's James Toseland getting the nod on both occasions - the first when he beat home favourite R?gis Laconi, the second against Noriyuki Haga.
The Manufacturers' battle is also at stake: Aprilia lead the way with 422.5 points, against BMW on 394 and reigning champions Ducati on 375. As well as Max Biaggi the Italian manufacturer can count on excellent support from Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) and Chaz Davies (ParkinGo MTC Racing Aprilia), two youngsters who have already celebrated their first win on the RSV4 in the last two rounds this year, respectively at Portimao and Nurburgring. If they manage to win this title, for Aprilia it would mean a 50th title conquered in Superbike, Grand Prix Road Racing and Off-Road.
At the final round of the 25th edition of the FIM Superbike World Championship, numerous other riders will be aiming to finish off the season with a podium place or a result that may modify the outcome of the title. These will undoubtedly include the outgoing champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) who began testing with Ducati's new 1199, which will be fielded in 2013, after the Portimao round. Team-mate Davide Giugliano, at 22 years of age one of the revelations of this year, also took part in the testing.

All eyes will also be on Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) following his double experience in MotoGP with Honda HRC. The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland has never really had much luck at Magny-Cours but one year ago he did manage to score the Tissot-Superpole.

Expectations are high for the FIXI Crescent Suzuki team following some great recent performances. The Japanese manufacturer has never won on this track, but it does have six second places to its name, so maybe Leon Camier, who went well at Portimao, will manage to buck this trend.

The final round will define the remaining top positions with Sylvain Guintoli (Pata Racing Ducati) currently holding onto the eighth place he has conquered with two wins and some other great races, while another Frenchman Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) is also looking to finish his debut season, with one win and three podiums to his name, on a high note: the 19-year-old is currently 12th overall and will be racing in front of his home fans. Two last-minute changes see the Effenbert Liberty team declare themselves absent from the final round completely, while one of the team's former riders Maxime Berger lines up for Red Devils Roma in place of the injured Niccol? Canepa.

Points (after 13 of 14 rounds): 1. Biaggi 347; 2. Sykes 316,5; 3. Melandri 308.5; 4. Checa 278.5; 5. Rea 255.5; 6. Laverty 241.5; 7. Haslam 189; 8. Guintoli 172.5; 9. Davies 156.5; 10. Fabrizio 133.5; etc.

Manufacturers: 1. Aprilia 422.5; 2. BMW 394; 3. Ducati 375; 4. Kawasaki 356.5; 5. Honda 270.5; 6. Suzuki 130.5.

Rea fifth in France
Jonathan Rea set the fifth fastest time in this afternoon?s opening qualifying session at Magny-Cours in France for the last two World Superbike races of 2012 on Sunday afternoon.

Carrying a new, one-off livery to highlight the unveiling of the 2013 CBR1000RR Fireblade last Tuesday, Rea was fastest in the first free practice session this morning. However, provisional pole position was taken by Tom Sykes who is battling for the 2012 World Superbike championship title with Max Biaggi, who finished seventh fastest today.

Carlos Checa, Marco Melandria and Davide Giugliano took the other front row places, just ahead of Rea, whose Honda World Superbike team-mate, Hiroshi Aoyama finished in 18th place this afternoon.

Aoyama has never visited the 4.411km Magny-Cours circuit and the Japanes rider spent today?s two sessions learning its combination of fast, long straights, tight hairpins and technical chicanes.

Jonathan Rea ? P5, 1m39.014s

I had a problem with my rear brake at the start of the afternoon session and we lost quite a lot of time but, all in all, today?s been OK. We had a very good rhythm this morning but, when we tried to improve the bike, we went the wrong way. Tomorrow we need to aim to improve the corner exit, which is where we?re really struggling. Also, turning in is a bit of a struggle but the bike is actually not so bad. We just need to sit down tonight and find a way to maximise the acceleration out of the slower corners here.

Hiroshi Aoyama ? P18, 1m40.631s

It?s another difficult circuit for me. The track is quite technical, with fast straights and a combination of hairpins and chicanes. It?s quite difficult to learn and I have a lot to do. I think I can improve more on my side than by changing anything on the bike at the moment. Of course, we will try to adjust a little bit on the bike but I need to look at my riding to find a better way around the racetrack. I am reducing speed a little bit too much for the chicanes and I need to find a better line through so I can avoid slowing down so much and carry more speed.

Pieter Breddels ? technical co-ordinator

Hiroshi was 18th which is not all bad considering he has never been here. We had some technical issues with his bike as well, which caused him some problems, so we need to look at that and look for a better setup. Jonathan was a strong first in the morning session with everything going smoothly. We didn?t really change that much for the afternoon, but we went away from this morning?s setup and it?s not clear whether this was the right way to go. We had some traffic and a problem with the rear brake so there?s a lot more to come tomorrow, I think.

2012 World Superbike championship ? final round, Magny-Cours, France

Front row secured for Melandri at Magny-Cours

It was a case of ?mission accomplished? today for BMW Motorrad Motorsport?s Marco Melandri, as he qualified his S 1000 RR on the all-important front row for tomorrow?s two Superbike World Championship races at Magny-Cours in France. His team-mate Leon Haslam is just one row behind ? in seventh ? despite riding while nursing a hand injury sustained in practice yesterday.

For this final round of the 2012 WSBK season, Melandri had already showed good form, even though he is bravely riding with cracked ribs from the heavy crash he suffered at the last round a fortnight ago in Portim?o. Putting the pain to one side, Melandri had been the fastest rider on his RR in the two combined qualifying sessions prior to Superpole, with a best lap of 1:38.152.

In dry conditions this afternoon at the physically demanding French circuit, it was Leon Haslam who found himself in provisional pole early on in the first Superpole session. His time of 1:38.145 was certainly good enough to see him safely through to SP2, so he returned to the garage to watch the action unfold out on track. Despite a small excursion off the track while pushing hard, Melandri recovered to post a provisional front row time on his next flying lap.

Having both made it through to SP2, it was Marco who put in a great time of 1:37.685 to go second fastest in the early stages. This time was only bettered by two other riders throughout the remainder of the session, so Melandri finished SP2 in a strong P4, just in front of Leon in P5.

For the final 10-minute SP3 session of the year that would decide the all-important grid positions for tomorrow?s two races, Marco posted a provisional pole time of 1:37.792 halfway through the session, just moments before Carlos Checa put in the fastest lap of the weekend so far at 1:37.422. Then, true to form, Superpole specialist Tom Sykes went even faster ? posting an untouchable time of 1:36.950 to claim his ninth pole position of 2012.

Despite this, Marco went marginally quicker than he had done earlier, with a time of 1:37.658 helping him to finish the session fourth fastest and ? importantly ? on the front row for tomorrow with a clear track in front of him. Leon?s time of 1:38.280 will see him start his final two races for BMW Motorrad Motorsport on the second row in seventh place.

With mixed weather conditions forecast for tomorrow, and the WSBK championship title race still to be decided, all results are still possible ? setting the scene for an exciting climax to what has surely been the best WSBK season in recent memory.

Marco Melandri: ?Superpole was very good for me because my physical condition is not the best. To be on the front row is a big result for me. We could not expect that yesterday so for sure I am happy. I was struggling with the qualifying tyre because with the extra grip you can change directions faster but for me with my injury that was impossible. I am very happy about my RR, we worked well this weekend with the team. Tomorrow is going to be another difficult day. We have to wait and see what the weather will do. It looks like it is going to be wet. And we have to see how my physical condition will be. It is the end of the season and for one more time we will try our best. At this last round I hope to give another good result to BMW Motorrad.?

Leon Haslam: ?Most of the year we have struggled with the qualifying tyres. With my first qualifier in SP2 I had massive issues, so I decided to not waste any time as I needed to make sure I got into the top eight. For this reason, I used the other qualifying tyre, and with it we managed to get into Superpole 3.

?As a result I had no qualifying tyre left, so it was difficult but I am happy with the second row position achieved. Our race pace is good and I think for tomorrow the weather might take a turn, so we really need to try and anticipate what might happen. If it is going to be similar to the past two days then I am feeling pretty confident with it all.?

Andrea Dosoli (Head of Race Operations): ?For both riders it was again a good Superpole. Our target is always to start from the first two rows and we achieved that once more. This is important for tomorrow?s races. Both riders have improved their feeling for the bike. They are able to lap faster and have a clear plan for tomorrow?s races.

?Leon has done a good job. In practice, he has improved his performance and we are sure that he will start well from the second row and fight with the top guys. Marco feels a little bit better compared to yesterday but it will be a tough challenge for him to ride two races of 23 laps. He is fast on a flying lap but we know that it will be difficult for him to keep the pace for a race distance. But we are confident that he will do a good race because he feels more comfortable on the bike and he is a strong guy. Overall we are looking forward to tomorrow.?

Sykes Takes Ninth Pole Of His Incredible 2012 Season
Sykes set a 1’36.950 lap time on his way to the prime starting spot for Sunday’s 23-lap races at the 4.411km circuit in the centre of France. With weather conditions set to be changeable and probably wet on raceday Sykes will now call on his good recent experiences in such conditions in his aim to score enough points to let him win the championship.

His main rivals, Marco Melandri and current points leader Max Biaggi, were fourth and tenth respectively after Superpole, putting Tom in a good position on the eve of the last raceday of an often successful season for the whole Kawasaki Racing Team. Some 30.5 points behind Biaggi, Tom now knows he has to simply go for the best results possible on race day to keep the pressure up on his rivals.

Silverstone race winner Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) overcame a bout of intestinal illness to get into the Superpole competition but running wide on the fast third turn cost him around 0.8 seconds at a crucial time and he could not progress all the way through Superpole at his home round. He is 13th on the grid.

Team Pedercini Kawasaki Superbike riders this weekend, Claudio Corti and Alexander Lundh, both made the Superpole cut but had very different fortunes. Corti, in his first SBK ride for the team, finally qualified a strong 12th on the grid after reaching Superpole 2. Lundh had a heavy fall in practice and suffered compound fractures of his T7 and T8 vertebrae, but without any neurological damage, although he will, of course, not race on Sunday.

In the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup Team Pedercini Kawasaki rider Bryan Staring still has a chance to win the title and today he qualified fourth, one place behind Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki). Leandro Mercado (Team Pedercini Kawasaki) was ninth.

Tom Sykes: “It is nice to get another circuit record and it is something a little bit personal for me. The challenge is good and I have a great team and manufacturer behind me who will help me achieve these goals, so I am very happy. I am starting the last race of 2012 from pole position so that is another little something that keeps me motivated for tomorrow, especially for my main rival on the third row. I am just happy that my team and Kawasaki have given me a good package to use once again.”

Loris Baz: “On my fast lap the feeling with the qualifying tyre compared to the race tyre was a little bit different and on the fast lap I went a little out of line on the long, fast, turn three. Without this mistake I could have gone into Superpole two. Our lap time is good on race tyres and we have made good improvements from Friday to now. I felt a little bit ill today but I am OK.”

Second row start for Rea at Magny-Cours
Jonathan Rea will start tomorrow?s final two World Superbike championship races of the 2012 season from the second row of the grid after setting the sixth fastest time in this afternoon?s Superpole at Magny-Cours in France.

The 25-year-old Honda World Superbike Team rider was unable to make best use of a soft race tyre in Superpole one and was forced to use a qualifier to progress to the final two stages of the shoot-out.

British rider Tom Sykes took his ninth pole position of the season in his quest to prevent series leader Max Biaggi securing his second World Superbike title tomorrow. Biaggi struggled today and will start from the third row for tomorrow?s two 22-lappers at the 4.411km Magny-Cours circuit.

Rea?s Honda World Superbike team-mate, Hiroshi Aoyama, was unable to qualify for Superpole on his first visit to Magny-Cours and, with rain forecast for tomorrow, will start from the fifth row of the grid.

Jonathan Rea ? P6, 1m38.252s

I?m happy enough with the way the bike is working, even though there are a few areas that we need to brush up on. All in all our race package is OK but in Superpole 1 I wasn?t able to be fast enough on the race tyre. We used our preferred race option instead of what might have been the faster option and we had to use one of our two qualifiers to get through to Superpole 2. It left us in Superpole 3 with no qualifiers, but a second row start is not a big drama. I?m looking forward to the two races tomorrow but the weather forecast isn?t that great. It would be a shame, once again, to do all our weekend work on a dry track if tomorrow?s to be wet. But it?s out of our control and we?ll just do the best we can.

Hiroshi Aoyama ? P18, 1m39.750s

I?m still struggling a bit with movement of the bike ? it?s doing it almost everywhere, including on the straight, so it?s making things difficult. We?ll try some things in the morning and we?ll have to hope that they will improve the situation. If it works, it?ll be good and I hope I can make some progress and push some more. I can make a certain lap time but I can?t go beyond that. I want to be able to push tomorrow because they will be my last two races with the team.

Pieter Breddels ? technical co-ordinator

Hiroshi didn?t make it into Superpole and tomorrow will be his last races with us. Somehow this year, we weren?t quite able to get him to gel with the bike to get some good results. It?s a shame for him and the team but I hope that in tomorrow?s races he can show his potential and move forward for some top ten finishes. With Jonathan we have proven today that we have a good race pace and rhythm. We struggled a bit with the ultimate lap time and ended up sixth, which is still good. It might rain tomorrow, when things will change again, but we saw in the full wet conditions in Portimao that we can be competitive when it?s like that. Anything can happen and everything is possible.

PROVISIONAL SECOND AND FOURTH FOR CHECA AND GIUGLIANO IN FIRST QUALIFYING TODAY AT MAGNY-COURS

Provisional second and fourth for Checa and Giugliano in first qualifying today at Magny-Cours Nevers, 5th October 2012: the Althea Racing team made the most of today?s dry conditions during the first day of action at the French circuit of Nevers Magny-Cours; riders Carlos Checa and Davide Giugliano closed first qualifying in second and fourth place respectively.

First practice took place late this morning on a dry track (air temperature 20˚C, track 25˚C). Both Althea riders improved during the session, making some changes to the set-up of their 1198 machines together with their technicians. Giugliano closed this first session with a best time of 1m39.6, which positioned him fifth, half a second from the fastest rider. Checa concentrated on working to find the best setting, closing the practice with the ninth quickest time (1m40.0).

In this afternoon?s qualifying, and in slightly warmer conditions, most riders? times dropped with respect to the morning?s session. Both Carlos and Davide were almost immediately up among the frontrunners, and remained there for the duration of the session. Having made some useful changes prior to this session, Carlos was able to benefit from better stability and grip, recording a best time of 1m38.6 which put him in second position at the session?s end. Giugliano lowered his best time set this morning by seven tenths, to close in fourth position (1m38.9).

Carlos Checa:
?We made some changes between this morning?s session and the qualifying and things went a lot better for us this afternoon. We tried the tyres that we have available and have an idea of the direction to take for the races. I have seen that it?s hard to stick with the 4-cylinders on the straight which would normally be a good place to overtake so we?ll have to find other points where we can get close enough to try. The stability and grip were better this afternoon and so I?m more confident. We need to manage the tyre situation as best we can, this is one of our strong points, and see what we can do.?

Davide Giugliano:
?We are feeling pretty optimistic. If we can continue to work this way then we should be able to make two great races on Sunday. There?s still work to do but I really want to send my bike into retirement with the best possible results this weekend. It would be nice to be able to fight for the positions that count, like we were doing earlier in the season but unfortunately this is no easy thing now. Anyway, I always give 100% so I plan to do even more than that this weekend in the hope that we?ll be able to do well.?

TIMES (Qualifying): 1. Sykes (Kawasaki) 1?38.2; 2. Checa (Ducati) 1?38.6; 3. Melandri (BMW) 1?38.7; 4. Giugliano 1?38.9; 5. Rea (Honda) 1?39.0; 6. Fabrizio (BMW) 1?39.1; 7. Biaggi (Aprilia) 1?39.1; 8. Haslam (BMW) 1?39.1

Super Sykes Only Half A Point From The Title On His Ninja ZX-10R!
Sykes and his team had to overcome the wet conditions that suddenly showed up on raceday morning with little time for preparations by his crew, but despite this Tom rode his Ninja ZX-10R with style in race one, only giving best to rain specialist Sylvain Guintoli and Marco Melandri. Eventual champion Biaggi fell and no-scored in race one and gave Sykes an opportunity to win the title in race two.

Tom led with conviction and pace for the whole of race two, seeing off an early challenge from Eugene Laverty to record his fourth race victory of the season. Biaggi was fifth in race two and that was enough for the Italian rider to win his second world championship by only half a point.

Sykes, wearing a Joan Lascorz tribute helmet this weekend in honour of his injured team-mate, won the hearts of the crowd with his brilliant determination and spirit to be champion against the odds, having made up 30 points on Biaggi and only losing the chance of overall victory by half a point because of a quirk of the championship scoring rules.

Tom had known after winter testing that he would have the chance to challenge in 2012, but his and the entire team?s performance had exceeded all expectations. He has taken four wins, 13 podiums in total, nine pole positions and three fastest laps.

Loris Baz, Sykes? team-mate had a tough home weekend, going tenth in race one then falling hard at high speed in race two. He was taken to hospital for tests afterwards but was later released, suffering just extensive bashes and bruises. He finishes his season as a replacement for the injured Joan Lascorz in 13th place, having only joined the series in Donington.

Team Pedercini Kawasaki rider Claudio Corti was ninth in race one, and then 12th in race two, strong results that put him 24th overall after only one round. His Magny-Cours team-mate Alexander Lundh had a heavy crash in practice and injured his T7 and T8 vertebra, although not seriously. He missed the Magny-Cours races as a result.

The title deciding Superstock 1000 FIM Cup race was held in wet conditions on Sunday morning and the race was won by Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki). Bryan Staring (Team Pedercini Kawasaki) lost his outside chance of the world title when series leader Sylvain Barrier finished second and took enough points to win the crown. Staring was fifth in the race after falling early on and working his way back up, and fourth in the championship, one place behind Guarnoni. Leandro Mercado fell and no-scored today.

Tom Sykes: ?We were on pole, took a new circuit record, got a podium and then a win and pulled back 30 points on Max Biaggi. Not easy against a rider of his level. Yes, obviously there is a massive disappointment on one hand because we were only half a point from the world championship! But on the other hand, being realistic, we are very happy and we have - by far - overachieved on expectations this year. We have been very strong and I think this weekend we have been particularly strong; partly because of this Joan Lascorz replica helmet I am wearing. I have had massive support here from my family, friends and the Kawasaki fans so to sum up my year it has been fantastic. I really appreciate that Kawasaki, Provec; all the team our sponsors, Motocard, Leo Vince and all of them have put us in the situation of fighting for the world championship. Hopefully next year we can be very consistent from the start.?

Loris Baz:
?It was not the kind of home race weekend I wanted but we got a bit unlucky when we lost some track time early in practice. I got sick on Saturday as well so it was not easy to ride but felt a bit better today. I started off confident to have a good result in the wet race one but I just did not have the same feeling as I had in warm-up. Had I not run-on I think I had the pace for about seventh or eighth. Following Max in race two I just hit a slippery patch and had a very big highside crash. I had a bad pain in my back and ribs but nothing was broken and then I developed a sore head. We went to hospital for tests just to check but everything is OK. We have some testing on the bike again soon so it is good to not have any injuries and although I am not 100% fit right now, I will be OK for testing which will really help our preparations for next year.?

Tremendous WSBK finale as Melandri goes out fighting

BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider Marco Melandri?s Superbike World Championship title dreams were prematurely ended in a thrilling second race at Magny-Cours in France today, when a cruel highside on lap seven caused the brave Italian to crash out of contention, leaving Max Biaggi and Tom Sykes in the fight to become 2012 World Superbike Champion. Nevertheless, BMW Motorrad achieved a great 2nd place in the Manufacturers? Championship.

In the end, it was Tom Sykes who was dealt the cruellest blow, for despite winning the second race of the day (and finishing on the podium in the first) he lost the 2012 title by the narrowest of margins ? just half a point ? to Biaggi, who had crashed out of the first race and only finished fifth in race two. Melandri?s podium finish in race one helped him secure third place in the championship, and also helped BMW to consolidate second place in the Manufacturers? Championship.

It had been a great start to race day, with Sylvain Barrier winning the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Cup title on the S 1000 RR for the BMW Motorrad Italia Goldbet STK team earlier this morning. Then in the first WSBK race, three RR riders finished in the top six, with Melandri coming second in his 50th WSBK race, followed by Leon Haslam in fifth and Ayrton Badovini in sixth place.

As Biaggi had crashed out of the first race, this meant that the title fight would well and truly go down to the wire, with just 18.5 points separating the top three riders going into race two. Treacherous earlier conditions that had seen only 12 riders complete race one, had improved significantly for the second race of the day, although the track was still greasy with damp patches in places.

It turned out to be a gripping contest in the early stages, with Biaggi languishing down in tenth place, Sykes out in front and Melandri chasing down the five riders in front of him, including his own team-mate. However, pushing hard to close the gap to leader Sykes, Melandri had a big highside on lap seven and was unable to continue.

Leon Haslam looked intent on finishing his time with the BMW Motorrad team in style, as he was involved in a tremendous battle for the podium in the early stages, but he also crashed out with just seven laps remaining. With all eyes on Sykes in front, and Biaggi down in fifth, the remainder of the race was a thrilling climax where any serious mistake by either rider would cost them dearly. As it turned out, the experienced Biaggi knew he had done enough to win the title by finishing in fifth, making it a bitter pill to swallow for Sykes, who played his part in the closest championship finish in history, and definitely one of the most memorable.

With the 14-round championship now done and dusted, BMW Motorrad Motorsport can reflect on an extremely successful year in World Superbikes, with 16 podiums achieved by both riders, including six race wins by Marco; and 421 points achieved in the Manufacturers? Championship. Marco secured third place in the rider standings on 328.5 points, with Leon finishing his time with the team in eighth overall, on 200 points.

Marco Melandri:
?It felt good to finish a race on the podium again after the last two unfortunate race weekends. My BMW S 1000 RR was working very well. In the first couple of laps of race one, I was still struggling a bit with warming up the tyre, but once the tyre was working, I could go at quite a good pace. Anyhow, it was a tough race and I did not want to overpace and risk too much. Unfortunately the track dried up more and more which did not work in my favour. When I finally passed Tom, the track was not really wet anymore, and in these conditions I had no chance to follow Sylvain, who really showed a strong performance today.

?The track conditions were very difficult in race two. I pushed 100 per cent but I could not change direction quickly. When I crashed I must have hit a wet patch, and I lost the rear of my RR. My back and my leg are very sore now. Overall, this was a great season for us. We can be proud of what we have achieved. When we started the season we were quite far from the top guys. We closed the gap quickly and fought with them for the rest of the season. We won races, but we also had some bad luck and I made mistakes. Everything was possible this year, and we can be happy. I hope to start from that point next year. A big ?Thank You? to all the team in Germany and at the track.?

Leon Haslam: ?In race one I had a few issues with the grip and the electronics, on top of that I made a few mistakes. Finishing the race in fifth is a bit disappointing as I know that a podium would have been possible. I had a good start in the second race but struggled getting into first gear in a few corners. I also got a false neutral coming down the hill in the last stadium section. I had to release the brakes not to hit Eugene Laverty and ran off the track. I came back in eighth position and tried to follow the group around Max Biaggi when I hit a wet patch. This put me down again.

?I am a bit disappointed about finishing the season this way, and I am also disappointed for my crew and the team who did an outstanding job all season long. Thanks to all of these guys. Max Biaggi again was Mr Consistent, congratulations to him for winning another World Championship. I feel a bit sorry for Tom who showed great racing this year. Losing the World Championship by only half a point is hard to take.?

Bernhard Gobmeier (BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director): ?The final race Sunday of the 2012 season was virtually a day of mixed emotions for us. In race one, Marco cleverly managed the race ? like he has done more than once this season. This was impressive. Leon finished the race in a solid fifth position. In the second race lady luck was not on our side once more. Both Marco and Leon crashed on wet parts of the track and could not finish the race.

?This result does not reflect the season for BMW Motorrad Motorsport: Until the very last race of the year we fought for the World Championship. At the start of the season we all would not have dreamt of this. We all are proud having finished the riders? standings in a very good third position and the constructors? standings in a fantastic second place. These results are due to the efforts of the entire team. Everybody involved has played his part and can be proud of this outcome. That?s why I would not only like to say ?Thank You? to Marco and Leon but to all team members in Munich, Stephanskirchen and at the track. Congratulations to Tom Sykes and his team who showed an unbelievable will to win and to the 2012 World Champions Max Biaggi and Aprilia.?

Rea rounds out 2012 with French podium

Honda World Superbike Team rider Jonathan Rea finished second in today?s thrilling finale to the 2012 World Superbike Championship at Magny-Cours in France.

The last race of the season, upon which the destination of the title depended, was won by British rider Tom Sykes, but it was Italian Max Biaggi who took the championship spoils, finishing in fifth position and taking the series victory by half a point.

In wet conditions, Rea began race one from sixth place on the grid but a great start and a good set-up for his Honda CBR1000RR allowed the 25-year-old to move to the front and open a 10-second lead.

However, on lap 12, he was caught out by the conditions and crashed out, limping back to the pits for some repairs to his machine. Rea eventually re-joined the race to take three championship points at the flag.

Another good start to race two placed Rea fourth before he made a steady move forward, passing Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli to take his sixth podium of the season and consolidate fifth place in the final standings.

Rea?s team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama was unable to complete his last outing for the Honda World Superbike Team in the way he wanted. The Japanese rider suffered serious grip problems in race one and, despite pitting to make adjustments, was unable to complete the race. Aoyama suffered similar issues in race two but, determined to finish the race, brought his CBR home in 14th place.

Despite Magny-Cours being the last event of the 2012 season, the Honda World Superbike Team still has work to do before the year end. New rider, Leon Haslam, will have his first shakedown test on the CBR1000RR Fireblade at Assen, Netherlands on Wednesday, before a comprehensive pre-season testing and development programme begins at Aragon in Spain next month.

Jonathan Rea ? 13th and 2nd

I needed some wings in race one when I got caught out by the conditions but it was frustrating because my team gave me a great bike for the wet. Everything was feeling good but I felt a bit like an amateur when I was in the gravel. At the beginning of race two I was a bit wary of the conditions and although I was able to get to the front, Tom (Sykes) didn?t make any mistakes. I?m really happy to be part of this championship and congratulations to Max on a great job. At the end of a long season I want to thank the team for their continued hard work. On certain days we?ve struggled but, on others we?ve capitalised on the strengths of the bike through the great work ethic we have as a team. We?ll go away this winter and I?ll make sure I?m in the best condition possible for the 2013 season; I?m sure the team will do the same with the CBR.

Hiroshi Aoyama ? DNF and 14th

This was my last weekend with the team and I wanted to make two good races. Unfortunately, I had some problems with the bike and the tyres, similar to the problems I?ve had all year. The guys have worked hard to solve the problems and we?ve tried a lot of things. It?s a pity that nothing really worked because it was a new challenge for me to come to Superbike and I was expecting a lot more. But it?s been a good experience for me with this Honda team so I want to say thank you to the guys and the sponsors who have supported us.

Pieter Breddels ? technical co-ordinator

Race one was wet and Jonathan was having an awesome race and moving away from the pack after a bit of a battle. He had a 10-second lead and was much faster than anyone when he crashed after a small mistake. That was a disappointment for everyone, with Hiroshi struggling and coming into the pits. Race two was not much better and it hasn?t really worked this season. We wish him all the best for the rest of his career. Race two was actually quite exciting for the championship. Jonathan had another good start and finished a strong second and we?re happy with that. It?s a good way to finish the season. There?s a lot of effort and resource being prepared for a development and testing programme so we can be back strong next year when we?ll try again to win this exciting championship.
