CAMIER READY FOR DEBUT RACE AT ISTANBUL WSB

FIXI Crescent Suzuki will be looking for success as the eni FIM Superbike World Championship heads to Istanbul in Turkey for the first time in its history this weekend for the 11th round of the 2013 season.

Leon Camier will be making his debut at the Turkish circuit, less than two weeks after a horrific accident left his participation in the event in doubt. The Englishman had a huge crash at Nurburgring in race one and was air-lifted to hospital with suspected back and neck injuries. A subsequent scan and thorough investigation by the German doctors cleared Camier and he was able to return home to Andorra to begin his recuperation and prepare for this weekend's race. He is still suffering with some discomfort from the accident and will attempt to ride his Yoshimura-powered Suzuki GSX-R in Friday's first practice session and assess his condition further.

Jules Cluzel is one of a handful of riders with experience of the Istanbul track after competing there in 2005 in the MotoGP? 125cc class and then again in the 250 series in 2006 and 2007. His experience will hold him in good stead to be able to re-learn the layout of the circuit quickly, but will find the power of a Superbike considerably different around the track to the two-stroke machines that he has ridden there before.

The 5,338m Intercity Istanbul Park is situated in the Asian side of Turkey and looks like being one of the most demanding and technical circuits on the calendar. The track has 14 corners throughout its anti-clockwise rotation and in some places the circuit is in excess of 21m wide; this should hopefully give many opportunities for overtaking and close, exciting racing as all riders learn their lines on a circuit that very few of them have raced on before. The layout feature fast tricky downhill braking sections and many elevation changes, plus one of the fastest corners in racing - which is taken at speeds in excess of 250km/h!

This weekend's schedule also takes on a different look as the World Superbike riders will be given a 90-minute free-practice session on Friday morning to allow them extra time to come to terms with the challenging facets of the circuit. This will give them the chance to push their machines, tyres and chassis to the limits to find the best set-up as they prepare for Sunday's two 18-lap races, the first of which will get underway at 11.00hrs local time (09.00hrs BST) and race two set for the off at 14.30hrs local time (12.30hrs BST).

Leon Camier:

"I'm still a bit beaten-up from the accident and although my neck is feeling a lot better it's not perfect. My arm and hand are giving me a bit of trouble, because I don't really have full feeling yet. I think I might have a bit of nerve damage, but I've been in the gym and it's getting better all the time. It still hurts a bit in certain positions, but I will give it a try on Friday and see how I get on. It should be ok, but until I ride and feel what it's like, I won't know for sure. I've never been to the Istanbul track before, but I've heard good things about it, so I really want to be fit to ride."

Jules Cluzel:

"It is good that we haven't had to wait too long for this race to come, because the last race wasn't an easy one for us, so we need to get back to work and find the performance and rhythm we had at Silverstone. I like the Turkish track, it's a good layout and I remember it from riding there before. It's a very fast circuit, so that should be fun, it will be a bit more like Silverstone so that should suit me and I'm looking for a competitive weekend. I know that to be on the podium every race is not realistic, but I want to be close to the top-five, I know this is possible and it's the first target this weekend."

New-look Pata Honda team heads to Asia
The Pata Honda team will compete for the first time in Turkey in this weekend?s 11th round World Superbike championship event at Istanbul Park with a weekend schedule that runs an hour earlier than other SBK events.

The 5.338km Hermann Tilke-designed circuit, which was completed just over eight years ago, lies on the Asian side of Istanbul and, for the Pata Honda team and riders, it will be a first racing visit to the Turkish city.

The team will be without regular rider Jonathan Rea, who broke his left femur after crashing on another rider?s oil on 1 September at the N?rburgring in Germany. The 26-year-old underwent surgery that evening and is optimistic about a relatively quick rehabilitation for his injury.

Rea will be replaced at Istanbul Park by Italian rider Michel Fabrizio, who has been competing in the 2013 World Superbike championship with another team. The 28-year-old from Rome currently lies in eighth place in the 2013 championship standings with one podium finish in the opening round at Phillip Island in Australia.

Fabrizio joins Pata Honda?s Leon Haslam who continues his own rehabilitation from a broken leg sustained in a practice crash at Assen in The Netherlands in April. The 30-year-old British rider has been getting back up to speed over the last few races and will be looking to improve on his season?s best result of seventh last time out at the N?rburgring.

Leon Haslam

I?m really excited about going to race in Istanbul, even though some of the other Superbike riders have ridden there before. I?ve seen a few of the GP races there on video and it looks pretty awesome, but I won?t really know how it is until I get out there on the bike on Friday morning. We made some more progress last time in Germany but, although I was hanging on to the back of the leading group in race two, we still had some issues. But I do feel like I?m finally in a position ? both physically and with the bike ? to be fighting for podiums again. We need a few more things to fall into place for that to happen, but we?re nearly there.

Michel Fabrizio

I am very happy to come back to the Honda CBR after my earlier experience with the DFX Honda Team. To race with the Ten Kate boys in the Pata Honda team is a real honour for me and, of course, I will do my best to get Jonathan?s machine near to the front. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Jonathan a fast recovery from his injury and I would like to thank the whole Honda Superbike team for their hard work to fix the bike in time for me to race in Istanbul.

Uncharted territory for the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team in Istanbul

The BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team is entering uncharted territory: this weekend (13th to 15th September), the FIM Superbike World Championship makes its debut in Turkey. The "Intercity Istanbul Park" will host the eleventh round of the 2013 season. As it is a new track in the calendar and there has been no pre-event testing on the circuit, this weekend's schedule has been slightly changed in order to give the riders and teams more track time to get familiar with the layout. Friday's first free practice will be extended to 90 instead of 45 minutes. The sessions on Saturday and Sunday will start one hour earlier than usual due to the time difference. Thus, for the audience in Europe the Superpole qualifying and the races will start at the usual times.

Although the Superbike World Championship is visiting Turkey for the first time, the two BMW factory riders Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies have raced there before with the MotoGP and the 250cc World Championship respectively. Marco especially has very fond memories of Istanbul as he won two of the three Turkish Grands Prix held at the venue. In 2005, he celebrated his first ever MotoGP victory at Istanbul, a success he repeated the following year.

In the Riders' classification of the 2013 Superbike World Championship, Marco is currently third with 257 points and a gap of 30 points to the top. Chaz is fifth with 221 points. Together, Marco and Chaz have already claimed six victories and a total of 14 podium finishes on their BMW S 1000 RRs this year. The latest successes were celebrated at the previous round at the N?rburgring in Germany, where both of them finished on the podium in both races, with Chaz claiming one victory and one third place and Marco finishing second and third respectively. In the Manufacturers' classification, BMW is third with 321 points, 48 points off the lead.

Marco Melandri: "I have very good memories of the Istanbul circuit. I raced there in MotoGP and I celebrated my first victory in that series in Istanbul against very strong competitors. I really like the track and I know it very well. This means that everybody will keep their attention on me. I hope that we will have a good race. For sure I want to achieve a strong result and make up the bad luck I had in the last races. The championship is still completely open and plenty of points are still available. I will keep on riding race by race with the clear target to win as much as possible and I am quite confident for the next rounds."

Chaz Davies: "I have raced at Istanbul before, although it was with a 250cc machine which is completely different to a 1000cc BMW Superbike. In addition, I expect that the conditions of the circuit have changed in the seven years since I was last there. But I have good memories of Istanbul, as I was quite fast there on a 250cc bike and I am sure it will be a good track for me now too. I will use the first 40 minutes of the opening session to get familiar with the track again. The results at N?rburgring are a real boost for the next races. We needed that and it was what we had the potential for already at Moscow and Silverstone, so it was nice to actually finish the job at N?rburgring. At this point of the season, the championship still isn't impossible and to finish within the top 3 is more realistic now so it is nice to get these results at this important time of the year. My target for Istanbul is to repeat what we did at the N?rburgring."

Serafino Foti (Sport Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "The results from our home race at N?rburgring were really positive and they brought us closer and closer to the top of the rankings. We are now heading to the next round at Istanbul in a positive mood and feeling quite confident. The team in Munich and in Italy continues to work hard and is fully focused on the championship. Our target is to reach the best possible result this season.

"Our riders really like the Istanbul track. Marco came here for the first time when he was in MotoGP and won twice. Chaz raced here in the 250cc World Championship. It is a fantastic track and we are confident that we will achieve satisfying results. The next weeks will be tough. From Turkey we will leave for the US, where we will race at Laguna Seca. Then we will directly return to Europe for the French round at Magny-Cours. The team and the riders are ready for this challenging time and look forward to further strong results."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team):
"After the successful weekend on BMW home soil we are now heading to a track which is brand new for World Superbikes. We are highly motivated and keen to consolidate what we have shown so far. As Istanbul is a new track for the series, the challenge is going to be more difficult but for sure also more interesting. The event preparation won't be an easy task for our engineers especially in areas like the gearbox selection and the electronic dynamic strategies. As we don't have data collected in the past, we will start our work based on the track layout data and will run a few simulations. We will try to make best use of the extra 45 minutes of free practice on Friday morning.

"The experience of our riders will help, as they have already raced there on GP machines. Marco has fantastic memories of the Turkish track, having won twice in MotoGP. The racetrack follows the undulating character of the landscape, offering a bit of everything: a section with one of the fastest turns where the riders reach over 260 km/h, but also a series of slow chicanes. It is quite wide and for sure it is very technical. The rider's skill will play an important role. We are all excited to explore the new racetrack and the enchanting country of Turkey."

New Circuit For Kawasaki Racing Team At Round 11
WSBK, Istanbul Park, Turkey, 13 September 2013
Tom Sykes now returns to action on his KRT Ninja ZX-10R as the Superbike World Championship arrives at the Istanbul Park circuit but his team-mate Loris Baz has had to pull out of the event.
New Circuit For Kawasaki Racing Team At Round 11
At the previous round in Germany Sykes won the first race of the day and then retook the championship lead by a single point after finishing fourth in the second race. Sykes now has four rounds and eight individual points scoring races left in which to grow his season total of six race wins and maintain his advantage.

Baz was one of a few high profile fallers at the previous SBK round in Germany, forcing him out of the event after a fast crash in morning warm-up. After several medical checks in the run up to the Istanbul Park race weekend the French rider headed to Turkey intent on racing. Final pre-race medical checks on his condition show evidence of a small area of damage on his D4 vertebrae, although this may be an old injury. Until further tests are done to make the situation absolutely clear all parties involved have taken the decision that Loris should take no risk, sit-out the Turkish race and continue his recovery programme.

Baz is sixth in the championship rankings after round ten, having taken a race win at Silverstone and a podium of third at Assen back in April.

Unlike most of his immediate rivals in the championship Tom has not ridden at the 5.340km circuit on the Asian side of the vast Istanbul metropolis before. Some former GP riders have experienced the thrill of a track that has some super-fast corners and also features many challenging changes of direction and gradient.

SBK rider Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) and Mark Aitchison (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) will once more fight for points this weekend. There will be no Superstock events at the Turkish round, with the stock classes not reconvening until the penultimate round of the year, at Magny-Cours in early October.

For the Superbike class the next round after Turkey will be at a returning SBK favourite circuit, Laguna Seca in the USA, with raceday coming on Sunday 29 September.

Tom Sykes: ?We left the previous round in Germany with a win and the lead in the championship and it is a new track in Istanbul now. It?s a track I had never seen before while some of my competitors have been there to race. That was a few years ago and we will just try to work a little bit harder to learn it well. Kawasaki was there with the MotoGP project so there will be some data and information that we can utilise I am sure. We are going to use our time in the long first practice session in the best way possible. I already have a plan laid out with my crew chief Marcel and hopefully that will give us that little bit extra. The Ninja ZX-10R has been quite consistent in most circuits, which is a nice thing for the rider. In fast circuits, stop/start circuits, we can go equally well and that is a great feeling. We worked hard over the winter and it is paying off because we are where we need to be in the championship now.?

Loris Baz: ?My injuries are getting better and better but to make sure, to not take any risk, we have all decided it is better not to ride here. There will be a new scan on the affected area soon and if there is no change in the condition it means that the fracture is old. If there is evidence of it healing it means that it is fresh, so we will see this before I go to America for the next round. If I had a broken leg I would race - with the back it is too much of a risk. Even if I was trying to be careful you can still crash. Also, if I ride to be careful I could lose the good feeling I have had with the bike. When we are sure I am OK then I can restart at the same high level as I was riding at in qualifying at the N?rburgring.?

Sykes Posts Superpole Win Number Seven Of The Year!
WSBK, Istanbul Park, Turkey, 14 September 2013
Championship leader Tom Sykes took his Kawasaki Racing Team Ninja ZX-10R to the Superpole win in Turkey despite this being his first visit to the long and challenging 5.340km Istanbul Park circuit.
Sykes Posts Superpole Win Number Seven Of The Year!
Sykes and his Kawasaki crew made set-up improvements to his Ninja ZX-10R overnight and they paid off for Tom on track, even though bad weather earlier in the day lost Tom valuable time at a circuit he had never ridden on before this weekend.

Using the first Superpole session, held in dry conditions, to verify the new set-up Sykes was fastest in the first and last of three Superpole contests, taking a narrow but important advantage of 0.022 seconds over his main championship rival Sylvain Guintoli.

Sykes? reputation as the modern day Superpole maestro continued this weekend. He scored his seventh pre-race ?win? of the year in 11 attempts, took his career Superpole total to 18 and in doing so became the fourth most successful qualifier in the history of SBK racing in his own right. He only needs three more Superpole wins to equal the career total of SBK legend Carl Fogarty, who has 21 pole positions.

KRT rider Loris Baz will not ride this weekend to continue his recovery from injuries sustained at the previous round. Mark Aitchison (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) took 10th spot on the grid with Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) 11th.

Tom Sykes: ?I am happy because this is a circuit I had never been to before and I only got two practice sessions yesterday. I lost two sessions today to the weather so considering all this I am happy. I am fighting a bit of a cold but the changes we made to the bike set-up last night were positive. My crew chief Marcel and all the guys at Kawasaki do a great job and we went in the right direction. We were able to try the adjustments early in Superpole and it was clear to see we had a good direction. We just need to see if we can put this to good use tomorrow. It is funny how it goes because Sylvain Guintoli is right beside me on the grid tomorrow. It seems we have been fighting all season, in qualifying and races, so it looks like it is going the distance!?

Challenging Saturday for the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team

It was not a particularly easy Saturday for the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team at "Intercity Istanbul Park". Due to the weather conditions the track action was mainly reduced to the Superpole qualifying in the afternoon, causing a loss of precious track time for the squad. Factory riders Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies will start tomorrow's first ever Superbike races on Turkish soil from seventh and eighth on the third row respectively. The "Intercity Istanbul Park" hosts the 11th round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship.

It was raining during this morning's second qualifying practice and Marco and Chaz opted not to go out on track along with many other riders. For the free practice at midday, the rain had stopped but conditions were still wet. The BMW duo spent most of the session in the garage waiting for the surface to dry and only went out on track shortly on their BMW S 1000 RRs.

In the afternoon, it was sunny again and Superpole started with dry conditions. Both Marco and Chaz did their first outing on race tyres. Chaz' lap time was good enough to bring him into Superpole 2 and he returned to the garage after a couple more flying laps. Marco was on course to set the fastest time on his first lap but crashed in the final sector. He re-joined and rode back to the pits. With six minutes to go, he started a second attempt, again on race tyres. He set the second fastest time of the session and progressed to Superpole 2. In the next session, it took Marco one outing on race tyres to qualify for the final and deciding session. Chaz went out twice, once on race tyres and then on qualifying tyres to reach Superpole 3. In the final session, Marco put in his first qualifying tyre but he returned to the pits immediately to change to his second. With this, he set the seventh fastest time. Chaz only went out with five minutes to go, using his second qualifying tyre. But he had a sensor failure and qualified eighth, only a few thousandths of a second behind Marco.

Marco Melandri:
"I expected a better result because on race tyres we were quite fast, on a single flying lap as well, as we saw in Superpole 1. But we were not able to improve the time with the qualifying tyres because as soon as we put those on the bike became difficult to ride. I am looking forward to tomorrow in a positive way. The bike works better with race tyres, so this is an advantage. But tomorrow's races will be quite unpredictable. We have two new types of tyres and it will be important to choose the right one. The races will be very long. I am not starting from a good position and I will have to attack. To be fast on this track you have to ride smoothly and this is my riding style, so overall I'm quite optimistic for tomorrow."

Chaz Davies:
"This afternoon we finally got some dry weather but unfortunately we did not seem to have a lot of luck. In the first Superpole, I struggled with the grip of the rear tyre. We made some changes and chose a different tyre in Superpole 2 and it was much better. But in Superpole 3 I immediately felt that there was an issue. There was a sensor failure in the shifting system and I had to use the clutch again. That did not allow me to push as I wanted to so unfortunately we are eighth on the grid. We definitely did not show our potential and I think we were capable of front row or maybe just the sharp end of the second row. Tomorrow will be quite interesting. I think a lot of people are in the dark a bit. I guess no one has done a full race distance so far. In addition, the circuit is changing every time you go out, so tomorrow there could be more grip but it could also be harder on the tyres. The main thing is to make a good start and then we will see."

Serafino Foti (Sport Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "We are not satisfied with today's Superpole. We expected a better result, consistent with what we had shown in the other qualifying sessions. Unfortunately with Marco we were not able to make best use of the qualifying tyres, while Chaz had bad luck with a sensor and could not improve his lap time. The results penalise us a bit. Tomorrow we will start from the third row and this does not help our riders. Anyway, we are quite confident for tomorrow's races. Both our riders were quite fast with race tyres and the races will be long and difficult for everyone. It will be important to have a good start and immediately gain positions. Tomorrow we will see two interesting races, for sure."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "Honestly we cannot be satisfied with today as we could not work as we had planned due to the bad weather conditions. We could not evaluate the changes to the settings and we could not properly test the tyres to select which one we will use in the race. Also, we are not happy with the Superpole. Chaz had a sensor issue which slowed his performance a bit and Marco had quite a lot of vibrations with the qualifying tyre so he could not improve compared to his best lap time with the race tyre. Considering what we have seen today as race pace, I think tomorrow we can expect good results and performances from our riders. For sure, starting from the third row won't help so a good start will be very important and we will work on this in the warm-up tomorrow."

CLUZEL & FIXI CRESCENT SUZUKI ON SECOND ROW

Team Suzuki Press Office - September 15.
FIXI Crescent Suzuki's Jules Cluzel will start tomorrow's Turkish round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship from the second row of the grid after qualifying in sixth-place today.

Cluzel progressed to the Superpole courtesy of yesterday's qualifying time, after rain on the 5,340m Intercity Istanbul circuit made it impossible for any riders to improve this morning. The French rookie also sat out most of the second free practice due to the wet conditions, but as the track dried in the later stages he was able to post a couple of fast laps that saw him finish second on the timesheets. In Superpole 1 Cluzel comfortably advanced to the next session with the seventh fastest time, a feat he equalled in Superpole 2. In the final Superpole he posted a time of 1'55.614 on his Pirelli qualifying tyre, which was good enough to see him and the Yoshimura-powered GSX-R finish in sixth, just over 0.7 seconds behind pole-setter Tom Sykes.

FIXI Crescent Suzuki will only have one representative on the grid for tomorrow's two races after Leon Camier was forced to withdraw following his huge crash and subsequent operation yesterday. He was released from hospital this morning after surgery to insert screws, pins and wires into seven fractures in his right foot. Camier returned to the circuit to be with the team and will return to Andorra soon to begin his recuperation.

Tomorrow will see the first World Superbike races ever held in Turkey, the first of which gets underway at 13.00hrs local time (11.00hrs BST) with the second 18-lap instalment starting at 14.30hrs local time (12.30hrs BST).

Jules Cluzel:

"I am happy with Superpole, but a little bit disappointed because I think third or fourth was possible. I was not able to make the perfect lap, which was all my own fault. I tried some different stuff and sometimes it was working for me and sometimes not. We also tried some different traction and I was not really sure about it, so probably didn't push hard enough. I think it was certainly possible to be fourth, but this would have changed nothing as it is still the second row and I'm happy to be there. I am looking forward to tomorrow and hope we'll have a good feeling with the race tyre. Hopefully it will be dry for warm-up and we will try more laps with the race tyre to see how it performs."

"It was good to see Leon out of hospital and back at the track, I hope he gets well quickly and is back on the bike soon - it is good to have him on the other side of the garage and I will miss him."

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

"Today has been a strange day for the team in many ways here in Istanbul. Both of this morning's sessions were meaningless due to intermediate track conditions, so the only serious running has been the three very short Superpole sessions. That hasn't given Jules and his crew an awful lot to go on in terms of making the necessary improvements from yesterday, but it does look like some of the key points that they have been targeting have been dealt with and clearly Jules was able to find enough confidence to post a good enough lap - despite it not being perfect - and end up on the second-row. This will give him a good opportunity to get involved with the fastest riders tomorrow.

"Leon has been with us most of the day at the track. The condition of his foot is really not pleasant and on top of that he has been pretty ill coming out of the anaesthetic and the after-effects of the operation. Hopefully he'll be feeling better tomorrow and will be able to be with the team at the circuit and start the first steps of his rehabilitation."

Istanbul - eni FIM Superbike World Championship - Superpole: 1. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) 1'54.872: 2. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) +0.022+ 3. Davide Giugliano (Aprilia) +0.201: 4. Eugene Laverty (Aprilia) +0.468: 5. Toni Elias (Aprilia) +0.674: 6. Jules Cluzel (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) +0.742.

Double Podium Extends Sykes? Championship Lead
WSBK, Istanbul Park, Turkey, 15 September 2013
Tom Sykes started from pole at Istanbul and took his KRT Ninja ZX-10R to a third and a second place in the two 18-lap races, extending his championship lead to eight points after 11 rounds.
Sykes led both races today and battled hard to try and win each one. He was 3.432 seconds from the winner in race one and only 1.708 seconds from double race winner Eugene Laverty in race two.

Crucially, at this advanced stage of the year, Sykes beat his closest rival Sylvain Guintoli each time and he now leads him by eight points, gaining seven points on him this weekend.

With Loris Baz not riding at Istanbul Tom flew a strong solo KRT flag this weekend, scoring his seventh Superpole win of the year on Saturday, two podiums which take his season total to 13 and he also broke through the 300 points barrier, with a new total of 323.

Mark Aitchison (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) scored 11th in race two after retiring in the opening race, while Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) had a good day in taking 11th in race one and 12th in race two.

Laguna Seca in the USA hosts the next round of the championship, with race one on Saturday 28 and race two on Sunday 29 September.

Tom Sykes:
?Two podiums today even though it was the first time for me here. We had only two-and-a-half hours track time against two top riders who have previous experience of this circuit. We made two or three changes to the bike between races and I think everybody saw that our bike was working a bit better in the second one. We started that race quite strongly and I was able to lead again but some of our competitors were using the tyres a little bit better, so Eugene Laverty was able to catch me. Unfortunately I did not have the package at the end of the second race to fight back and try to win it. I believe that we can learn and improve from this weekend. I wanted to win in race one as well; I pushed hard but I feel if I pushed any harder I may have overstepped the mark. The changes we made this weekend should help for the future races. We are leaving with an improved points lead and that can only be a good thing.?

CLUZEL CHARGES HARD AT ISTANBUL WSB

FIXI Crescent Suzuki's Jules Cluzel took a pair of very creditable seventh place finishes in today's inaugural Turkish round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship at the Intercity Istanbul Park circuit.

Cluzel was flying the flag for the Fixi Crescent Suzuki team following Leon Camier's injury and subsequent withdrawal earlier in the weekend and in race-one the team's only rider finished a commendable seventh after a race-long battle with Davide Giugliano. The pair swapped positions a number of times during the race, before the Suzuki man's rear-grip started to go and he settled for a safe seventh position at the flag.

Race-two took a similar theme as the Frenchman got away with a lead group, but a mistake on lap-five saw him run wide on the first corner and lose the tow. He regrouped before passing Giugliano for seventh and then got involved in a battle to the line with Leon Haslam. Cluzel was passed by the Honda rider, but immediately took the place back and then held on to seventh all the way to the finish by producing some impressive and consistent lap-times on his Yoshimura-powered GSX-R1000.

FIXI Crescent Suzuki was down to one-rider today due to Camier's huge crash and resulting operation on Friday. He was re-admitted to hospital today suffering with dehydration, but is recovering well from this and after-effects of the surgical procedure. Camier plans to return to his home in Andorra tomorrow to begin an intensive rehabilitation routine in a bid to get fit for the last race of the season at Jerez.

Today's races were held in warm and sunny conditions with track temperatures reaching 40?C. Eugene Laverty took victory in both events. FIXI Crescent Suzuki and the rest of the World Superbike field will now head across the Atlantic Ocean for the next round of the championship, which will be held at Laguna Seca in California, America on Sunday September 29th.

Jules Cluzel:

"It's been a really interesting weekend as a whole. I was a bit disappointed with the first race because I had the feeling I could fight for fifth place. I fought a bit with the other guys for that position, but at the end I was not able to pass them. For the second race we had a lot more data and had done a lot more laps so we had more information. We made some big changes in the chassis and I felt some differences, but they were not so easy to understand. I made some mistakes in the race and I did some good lap-times, but the really interesting point was the last part of the race: I tried to be calmer and understand how the traction was working and how the bike was different. This helped how to learn how the bike could be better and me also. I think I understand a lot more now and I'm looking forward to the next race because we have more information and I will have time to think about this weekend. I am happy with two seventh places, but I had the feeling we could be stronger. I now need to improve next time!"

Paul Denning - Team Manager:

"Jules worked really hard today and rode at a very competitive level; the lap-time gap to the podium guys was not so big, but what cost him the chance to battle for a top-five place was errors in both races - maybe just trying too hard in the wrong places. However, it was very positive that he was able to re-group, re-find his rhythm and also learn a lot about some new electronic settings that he has been working with here in Istanbul. Even if we're a little bit frustrated with the positions, Jules enjoyed riding the bike today and definitely learnt a lot and he is a positive mood for the trip to the USA.

"Leon's ridiculous run of misfortune continues and even after a successful operation he found himself back in hospital today. He had severe dehydration and some nasty after-effects of the surgical process. The update is that he is now resting and being very-well cared-for. Thanks to the medical team at the Anadolu hospital for their continued care and to our colleagues at Doodson Broking Group for their swift and very helpful assistance in getting Leon the best possible care and taking care of arrangements."

Podium position for the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team

The BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team stepped onto the podium at the Turkish debut of the FIM Superbike World Championship. Factory rider Marco Melandri finished second on his BMW S 1000 RR in today's first race at "Intercity Istanbul Park". In race two, he was fourth. His team-mate Chaz Davies had issues in race one and finished eighth. It went better for him in the afternoon, when he crossed the line in sixth. After 11 rounds of the 2013 season, Marco is fourth in the riders' championship with 290 points, 33 points behind the lead. Chaz follows in fifth with 239 points. In the Manufacturers' classification, BMW is currently third with 354 points. Both races today were won by Eugene Laverty.

At the start of race one, both BMW factory riders gained positions. Marco improved from seventh to fifth, Chaz from eighth to sixth. After the first lap, Marco was in fourth while Chaz was sitting in seventh. In the early stages, Marco lost a bit to the leading trio, but halfway through the race he started to catch up and closed the gap to the top 3 with every lap. On lap 14, he overtook Sylvain Guintoli to take third, entering lap 16 he passed Tom Sykes for second. He then tried to close the gap to leader Laverty but the Irishman was too far away to catch him up in the remaining laps. Marco rode his RR to second on the podium behind Laverty. Chaz meanwhile was fighting in a group of four and was temporarily lying in fifth. But a massive lack of grip meant he could not hold the position. Throughout the race he lost positions and crossed the line in eighth.

In race two, Marco was sixth after lap one, Chaz seventh. In the early stages of the race, they were involved in several battles, gaining positions. After lap six, Marco was fourth and Chaz sat in sixth. But this time, Marco struggled to catch up with the front runners and the gap increased throughout the race. In the end, he rode a lonely race to finish fourth. Chaz had a better feeling on his RR in this race. On lap 16 he improved to fifth, but lost one position again on the final lap to come home in sixth.

Marco Melandri: "In race one, I lost a lot of time in the first laps. With a new tyre our bike is always very nervous. On the first lap I had to shut the throttle on the straight as the bike was shaking too much. But then after ten laps, because there was less fuel the bike became lighter and it was easier to ride. At that time I was quite fast and I caught up with the top guys. But when I passed Tom, Eugene was already very far away and for me, second place was already a very good result.

After race one, we made some changes to the setting of the bike but, probably because of the higher track temperature, the grip went down. We tried to balance the bike with some changes to the rear but as consequence, I started struggling with the front. I couldn't be fast entering the corner and I had some issues trying to brake. In the end I could not get the same result as in race one. We have still three races to go and, even if it'll not be easy, I continue to believe. I want to fight and give my best in each race."

Chaz Davies: "After missing a lot of track time yesterday, it was difficult today. In the time available, we struggled to find a good set-up. I was lacking grip on the front and the rear and also struggling with the stability and balance. I was not happy with race one. After warm-up, we made a small change to the balance to try and find more grip in the rear but it just made the front worse. It was so easy to lose the front; I think that happened to me 10 to 15 times throughout the race. I couldn't enter the corner fast; every time I tried to use the front brake with any lean angle I would tuck the front and not only that but I also struggled with rear grip. I wasn't able to do any better so that was very frustrating.

I was much happier with race two which was definitely better. It was half the gap to the leaders than in race one but in the end it was not good enough. We really made a step in the right direction but we could not completely solve the issues we had in race one. I think a third race would have suited us today. I am not sure if I would have been in podium contention then but for sure we would have further improved and would come even closer."

Andrea Buzzoni (General Manager BMW Motorrad WSBK): "Today's results were not what we expected. Marco rode the first race in a very clever way. In the first few laps he was a little slower than the leading group. Then he increased the rhythm, closing the gap to the front, and was second at the finish line. Maybe with two more laps, he could have been in first position. This result brought him closer to the top of the riders' ranking. In race two, on the contrary, something didn't work and he couldn't repeat the result. In the end the gap to the lead in the ranking has increased a little. But regarding the championship that does not affect us too much: we're still in the game and we have to keep concentrated. Chaz couldn't find the right balance and the performance of the bike which all of us expected during this weekend. Unfortunately he had to limit the damage. Looking to the championship ranking, the gap has increased, but he can still fight. We are heading Laguna Seca where we have good conditions to get a good result. Our riders like the track and both know it very well from already riding there. In addition the track fits very well to the characteristics of our RR. We have to achieve a great result to continue to fight for the title."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "Congratulations to Marco for his podium in race one. He put in another strong performance here in Istanbul, a track where he has been successful in the past. But overall we have to say that our competitors have done a better job than us today. Even if Marco was able to get the maximum of the package in race one, he was struggling in race two. As soon as the track temperatures increased, he was lacking grip and struggling with stability. Chaz had some issues in race one, where he was not comfortable with the bike. Unfortunately, due to the limited track time, the set-up was not perfect for race one. His crew improved the bike for race two but it still was not enough. The main areas we have to work on are grip and stability. Our target is to improve that for the next round at Laguna Seca. We must keep working hard in order to prepare best for the next races. The championship is still open."
