.

Buy her a new kitchen to go along with the NEW fridge :neenaw: then re-use the old units to make your benches, fixed proper to the wall and with the old worktop they're plenty good enough, strong and give you storage space.

cheapest way to make a seriously strong work bench..4x4 frame work..screwed and wood glued..dont worry about special joints as long as its all cut nice and square..finished off with a 1/2 hour fire check door blank (blockwood glued between ply)..you could stick a car on top of it no problem

As BOTS and MickB have said Ian......kitchen units. Store the tools you don't use all that often in the 'under-bench' cupboards and fit a sheet of 18mm ply or MDF to the wall above the benchtop. Screw on a selection of tool clips and pegs to the board....use these to hang the everyday tools on.

Vice bolted to the benchtop......leave the rest of it clear. Benchtop drills and grinders just get in the way (IMHO)....fix those sort of electrical tools to a thick offcut of ply and clamp them to the bench with 'G' cramps when you need to use them.

Plenty of electrical outlets around the walls.....saves having to use extension leads. Good lighting overhead....and a decent quality lead-light that can be used at low levels.

HTH

why the feck would ian wanna stick a car on his workbench reefer,or are you insinuating it would take HIS weight....i thought that's what you meant %$fan

ian his words, not mine you understand :neenaw:

p.s. go with the kitchen units/worktop,does the job more than adequate plus tina gets a new kitchen to go with the fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave etc etc......... :p

I would suggest you put or get the following on your bench Ian..

a vice as you already said.. Make it a big strong one.. spend a few bob on it.. better still troll the boot sales as you can get some real bargains.. Buy a little one and you WILL regret it sooner or later !

a recess.. about 7 or 8 inches square and about 1/2 to 1" deep. It is somewhere to put the nuts and bolts as you take things apart

a 1/2 high ridge 3 inches from the back of the bench.. somewhere to stick the pencils and other bits and bobs of that ilk.

Off the bench but close by, a decent sized bin. Not dustbin sized but not living room sized either. Boot sale once again !

if you wanna go really post peg board for you more essential / delicate tools.

try and avoid lin bins unless you have the pucka backboard for them.

A compressor ( small one but one with a reservoir attached )

A small trolley jack

This one might sound daft or posh or whatever, but a carpet.

Another that sounds daft.. paint the walls and ceiling white. If you buy a couple of cans of crap white emulsion from B and Q or whatever the light levels will be increased dramatically.

Proly think of more later but thats a good start :p

I left a cracking bench in my garage when i sold the business, a big 3mm steel topped thing with pillar drill, built in earth clamps for my welding set, grinder, and strong cupboard underneath housing my compressor. I miss it sooooooooo much now :B

Not daft at all, John.....makes good sense. Also.....paint the floor with the pukka floorpaint. If you leave it as rough concrete, the first time you drop a tiny bolt or small spring you'll never be able to spot the fecker on an bare floor.

Serious this time. Go to Machine Mart or RS or whoever and get a lockable steel tool cabinet, the type with the sliding draws etc. Bolt it to the floor and pretend to be a brain surgeon as you pull out the tools you need from a single layer, instead of having to dig around inside a tool box.
