Pleasure to help..

Go onto the XX forum factor , then go to search. In the search topic type in "wiring loom", then in author/member, type in "Bezzer"

I tried to put a link in 3 times, and it wouldnt work... the top item on the search is the one you need... Wiring loom 99-00 by Bezzer... He has just done it to his birdy, and all the info you need is there.

Cheers, and best of luck,

Rolfy

I BASICALLY HAVE A CHARGING PROBLEM, ONLY PUSHING OUT 13.5v AT 500RPM BUT THE CHARGE RATE GOES UP WHEN I SWITCH THE LIGHTS/BRAKE LIGHTS ON SO I WOULD ASS U ME THE REG/REC IS DOING ITS JOB???

Ok Steve, lets see what we can do for you..
I an sure that providing everyone knows the author is Bezzer, and him being a reasonable sort of chap, he will not mind the info being published on here for you..
First off, one more try at a link.. then if not we will see about putting the info on here..
http://ixxra.co.uk/ipw-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2816&highlight=wiring+loom

However, this problem has NOTHING to do with the charging issue you have..
That sounds to me as though one of the alternator windings has gone fut

Hi John, thanks for the reply let me start from the beginning, are you sitting comfortably!

I bought the bike from a chap in Huddersfield, pieboy, I believe, although his name is Mark. Rode the bike home (Bath, Nr Bristol) no problem. Set about cleaning it up the next day, as you do, and tucked it away, no problems. Went back to it the following morning, flat battery. (bike was left idling a long time the previous day, thought id mention this as i know they dont charge much at idle). Checked the charge rate, 13v at 5000rpm, oh sh*te!
Didnt panick, put the battery on the optimate and left it for a week. Had the battery tested,(good tester, good dlr), and it was ok. I have just been down to the garage and started the bike on a fully charged healthy battery and the readings are as follows; at idle charge rate of 13(+or-0.2v) volts. at 500rpm, engine warm, 14.10volts, switched on the headlights and brake lights and at 5000 rpm charging voltage went up to 14.35/40 volts. now i know that honda recommend a charge rate of 14.9-15.5 volts at 5000rpm, and just to check they do actually do that i contacted a mate down on the south coast with exactly the same bike and his charge rate is 14.9 at 5000 rpm, no lights on etc so i know they do do it. the problem i have is knowing what 'bit' to renew. I have been a car mechnic for 25 yrs so i am assuming that the charging system on the B/B is basically the same principal as a car, i.e. if the battery has a loading put on, i.e. lights switched on etc and the charge rate increases then the regulating system is working? that is what mine is doing so am i fairly safe to assume that the reg is ok? I am warming towards your suggestion that the alt/dynamo, (the bit inside the l/h engine cover), is faulty. Now i am faced with 2 options, 1 is to repair the bike and 2 is to just leave the battery on charge permanently as it is only used some weekends. I personally will not be able to sleep properly knowing the bike has a fault (sad, I know!) so repairing is the only real option for me. I know that no-one can give me the ultimate, 'yes, that will cure it' answer but you have a much wider knowledge of these than I do and so would appreciatte any help you could offer. The bike is a 2002 FI uk spec, no alarm, just H.I.S.S. as std.

hope you can point me in the right direction, rgds,Steve.

p.s. do you keep the parts? i.e. alt/dyn/reg, if so, what are the costs?

I read it myself again, and saw how it could be misunderstood....

I did mean are you registered for IXXRA... Specially as it was what you were asking about.

Even the link from John will only let you in if you are a "confirmed" registered user...ie. you need a name & password to go on there...

Sorry for any ambiguity, but I was only trying to help.

Best of luck, and hope you get it sorted soonest,

Cheers,

Rolfy

ps... It sounds like the regulator has/is going....Its a common problem with blackbirds (although usually earlier ones...) There is a later spec one available from Jaws or 1200 Pete with larger cooling fins. Dont know the cost though...Not as much as a dealer price I wouldnt have said... John or Pete will surely sort it for you.

There are 3 components to consider..

The first is the battery. Most bike batterys have a life of between 2 and 4 years.
Whilst there are some that go on longer they are few and far between and it is down to luck rather than anything else ( though of course in theory a lead acid battery SHOULD last donkeys years ! )

The second is the reg rec.
On Carb birds this is a common problem. Caused originally by the poor cooloing ( NO heat sink fins at all ! )
Although they do fail on the EFI bikes it is fairly rare.

Thirdly there is the alternator windings themselves.
These, fo some odd reason, are suspect on the EFI bike.. Perhaps it is because they deliver a higher current and as such get considerably hotter than the carb ones..

What you descibe would tend to send me scurrying off to get a new battery to be honest.
Why ? Cos anything higher than 13.8 volts and the battery will be on the right side of the charge .. so whilst your voltage is low, it should still mean the battery is charging..
Have you got a battery you can hang on to the bike for a little while as a tester ?

Oh,,, thought !
Unplug the alternator and make sure the resistance readings between each leg of the three phases is the same.. If it aint, then you know whats gone phutt ! :p

Steve, I know the bike you own, it was on the Lincs rideout this year 2 up and he had NO problems with it, infact he was gutted to have to sell it so i can assume the problem is freak coinsidence and he wasn't selling due to ant probs with it.

Thanks Rhino, I'm sure you are right, seemed a genuine bloke and like you say, he was gutted at having to sell. Looks like I'll be checking the Alt windings as per John's suggestion,

A BIG THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLIED, I will let you all know what I find.

John I can see this thread ended up not being about the loom problem but it would be a good idea to have the details on BIRD as well as IXXRA to point peeps in the right direction and hopefully save themselves a bit of money doing a DIY job as a lot of the bikes are now outside the 5 year warranty. I'll duplicate the post and piccies in the Help Forum.

What I was also gonna ask if if it would be possible for us to make it a permanent feature on the main site ? Naturally full author recognition given..

As you say, it is important and is something that is likely to be relevent for years to come..

What say you mate ?
