following on from Silverones thread about car cred, what is the longest & shortest time you have kept a car Mine is seven years, & it was a Metallic silver Sierra 1.8GS 'H' Reg excellent car never failed an MOT.

Shortest time was a Vauxhall Astra Van, bought out of Freeads as an 1800cc, turns out the twat had replaced the engine with a 1300cc engine kept it for two weeks sold it for what I paid for it but informed new owner it was now a 1300.

Bought a brand new Daihatsu fourtrak 2.8TDX with all the extras for ?15.999 on a Y plate brilliant car lots of fun but not practical, sold it six months later for what we paid for it.

No idea ! I would think the shortest would be less than a day ( cos at one time I flogged a few jam jars to keep the wolf from the door ) but the longest ?? Prly a couple of years max.

As far as I am concerned cars are a tin box on wheels that I need to own to shift the bigger parcels ( like Mo ! LOL ! ) about..

good question.....

Shortest....one of the new Renault Meganes (shakin that ass)....owned it from new, and it spent mroe time in the garage than in my hands....drove it back to the supplying dealer and tossed the keys on the dealer principals desk...what a crock of shite.....

Longest - a Beemer 528 with all the trimmings...used it when I started working for myself for long commutes....kept it 2 years.....

Are we starting a CAR SECTION now ?????

Longest saab 90002.3T full leather and toys bought for ?300 + cost of replacement turbo ?85, sold last week for ?300 after 2.5 years of tyre squeeling abuse even though it was knackered, the fella just wanted it for the limited edition wheels.
Shortest probably a Vectra I bought off a guy at work, drove it home and realised it would die a very quick death if subjected to my driving so it never left the drive till I sold it on for an extra few hundred quid, but then there have been many that have fallen into the later category. Cars last an average of 4-6months in my hands.

Longest is the current box, Rover 220 GSi. Had that 5 years now. Shortest would be eighteen months. My beloved Mk1 Astra GTE. Ex wife sold that while I was on a course, but thats another thread.

Longest was a Volvo 340 GLE. It was also the one car I hated the most ever, - the steering was heavy, the gearshift was heavy and long, the clutch was heavy, the road noise was loud and it handled like a rhinoceros on a wet clay bank. It was bought as a workhorse (a second car to do all the dirty work) from Canterbury auction for a song as it had high mileage. It was incredibly reliable and practical - once had a huge upright fridge/freezer in it. I abused it unmercifully for 9 years and it NEVER broke down or failed to start in all that time.

My g/f and I drove it to the south of Spain, dangerously overloaded, when we moved there and it was there for six years used daily without a single service, oil change, mot or ANY maintenance whatseover, and then drove it back again, hopelessly overloaded once more. I only ever put tyres, batteries and brake pads on it in all that time. Got it back to uk and all it needed for an mot was wiper blades, a rubber fuel hose and an exhaust!! We abused that thing like you wouldn't believe and it just wouldn't die. Ran it for another three years in UK and it eventually it failed the mot with a rotten chassis. Did 180,000 miles. I HATED the thing, but it was incredible in another way, we just couldn't bring ourselves to get rid of it.

Shortest time I ever owned a car was about 25 mins. I spoted this escort estate in the local Folkestone paper and went around and bought it. While I was there doing the deal another guy and his wife turned up in another escort estate which was on it's last legs, hoping to get it. Disappointed that he missed it, he left but parked up down the road. He followed me across town to home and asked me if I would take ?50 profit on it (in approx 1988). Well, what would you do??

Longest - is the only new one we've ever had ''Fiat Punto'' 5 years and still got it, but we don't like it, but we have ageed to run it into the ground (till scrap).

Shortest - Morris 1000 traveller (wooden bits), I bought to do up, my first job on it was to weld a new floor in, unfortunately I set it on fire, totally burnt out, no insurance :xm

Hunter once bought a VW Beetle, at Tewkesbury car auctions, for ?10 (not long ago, you realise!) looked over it, found it was falling to bits, bunged it back through and got ?15 10/- for it! Total ownership time - around 30 minutes!

My longest ownership was my beloved '66 Anglia, called Arfur, partly 'cos it was given to me by my dad's (Arthur) who is was a cockney, partly because everyone said it was half a car (Arf a car?). Had that car about 7 years before the rear spring hanger went and I had to scrap it:B
