Whats in your tank

Hi guys.
This is just a quick queery.
It's not about what it does to the gallon but more on how much the tank holds.
Most books I've read claim 23 litres, but I have my doubts! The reason is there were three black marks left when I filled the tank this morning but on filling it up it only took 13.5 litres, and I just can't see that there's nearly 9 litres left in the tank.
I know not every tank will be the same but can anyone throw any light on what a tank holds? And what's left when you come onto the red?

I sometimes have cause to fill up tanks from dry, and believe me they do take all of 23 litres !

its worth mentioning that the fuel guage scale is not linear, the first half of the scale appears to represent about 3/4 of the tank whilst the lower half only represents 1/4 of a tank.... the last two bars represent sod all

My handbook says 29 litres....but on the handbook cover it also says "Honda Pan European STX1300" !!!!!!!
