thereby ripping off the tax-payer who had paid to have the council houses built and resulting in the current shortage of council houses as she would not allow councils to spend what little money was raised to build new council houses. She did some good for the country though???????

Where I lived in Tameside the local council is allways Labour. The local party could pin a red rosette on a pig and it would be voted in the backing for the labour party in the area is so strong. I work on the election in the Waterloo constituency and have done so for about 30 years and it never ceases to amaze me the number of people that moan about what the council do but still vote for them just because they are labour.

Some of the electorate are so feckin thick they come into the polling station at a council election slagging off the then conservative government and think that thier vote will go against the government. One beauty I heard was at a parliamentary election when some thick sod actually asked why Margaret Thatchers name wasnt on the ballot paper. Another favourite question is "Do I put a cross or a tick?" and that from someone who has probably voted for the past 30 years. I really do think that before anyone is given the vote they should have to complete an IQ test.

Prior to the 1982 Housing Act, I think it was back in the mid 70's, Tameside's council policy was to sell council houses but as soon as every councillor who wished to had bought his council house the rules were reversed. The election of Margaret Thatcher was the ONLY time when I voted on something in a political parties manifesto and it actually happened.

As far as Labour governments go Harold Wilsons efforts during the 60's resulted in foreign holidays being restricted to taking ?20 spending money and the banks finally calling in Swiss bankers (The Gnomes of Zurich) to sort out our economy because the country was going bankrupt. Your present Labour prime minister has just given away ?800bn (won by MT's government) in rebates from the EEC for feck all.

When negotiating with other countries..... YES... I believe our position in Europe would have been far worse under any other leader. I hated what she did to the miners and other unions though and I think this country has become a poorer place because of this but I dont see this government re-installing the unions powers do you?
