As a few of the recent threads have resulted in some "interesting" er, "discussions", I just wondered what we could all argue about now :neenaw:

Anything goes.

Legalise cannabis? done that
Stunt Ridng fook ups? done that
Colour of bike? done that
Asylum seekers welcome? done that
Ghosts? done that
Does the Earth suck? (if not, does her sister?)
Is Bert Gay? (sorry not valid, we're all in agreement :f )

yep, I'm bored

no I'm not.

Yes I fookin am,

No .....

Taking delivery of my 'Bird, then riding up to the RiDE photo shoot and when asked what I thought of my new bike, said "it's a piece of shit".

A lot of 'Bird members were there and when all the collective heads turned around as one (looked like a pack of meercats!) I could feel the hate !!!

Scary stuff.

Why was the bike shite???
Its only the gearbox which i cannot get used to,, thats a cluncky lump of crap but otherwise its fine.

My worst moment has to be on the Cat & Fiddle road last week. I was going toooooo quick after passing a car and had it sideways with the rear locked just prior to tipping it into the corner......i nearly pissed in my pants when it happened.

Ahem.. Mr sensible steps up to the line............................

Here is one that aint been done before and is close to my heart..
Should councils allow factory units to be built within 100 yds of established housing knowing they will be running noisey machinery 24 hours a day ?

Another.... what do the panel think about light pollution and can they offer any long term answers ?

To Q1, an emphatic NO. My mate lives near a recently opened laminates factory and it kick out loads of noise 24hrs a day. They are at their wit's end along with hundreds of other residents. Have you been on to the council or environment agency John? - I've heard those bastids and I must say I wouldn't like it.

Q2 Light pollution sucks. I love to gaze at the night sky but there's hardly any point these days, you can only see the main bits. As for the solution - wellll......I drive a power station.

Noise - have you contacted the Environmental Heatlh people? They can close down just about anything with the powers that they have.

Light - Sitting on a mountain in Switzerland 2 years ago made me realise just what we were missing in this over illuminated septic isle of ours, well many parts anyway. The clear night sky was beautiful and with no artifical light to haze the view, it quite literally takes yer breath away. There is far to much unnecessary lighting, and aside from the cost involved, which we all end up paying for in the end.

Just goes to prove, once again, that black is best!

Housing can over ride noise pollution, to name one case I know a well known family road haulier in Devon had been based in his yard for years, a loyal band of drivers he employed, not a massive firm but well respected, close to his yard a brand new housing estate is built, sure enough from day one the complaints started, initialy causing the firm to only operate after 7 am and before 21.00 pm I believe, not practical in haulage, he complied, still the complaints came, bear in mind these people complaining had moved to this area from all over the South west, so were not locals, in fact many of them comuted to Bristol (This was near Exeter) In the end the firm folded, meaning drivers were laid off, not nice esp when some of them had 30 yrs service with this firm. OK I'm on the side of the haulier, but you get my drift.

As for light pollution, I find a high powered air rifle does the trick. $%3un

noise .................... if the houses were there first then the factory should NOT be opened :t

but if the factories are there before the houses then its tough titty for the people who are stupid enough to buy a house next to a factory when they surely know its going to be noisy :violin:

light ................... not a problem here cos its not nearly so over populated in scotland and i never have to go far to be away from built up areas :yo: :yo:

Right here goes.. I have to admit to having some experience here being a Home Office approved Architectural Liaison Officer, so if this helps use it.

Any proposed building must go through a planning application at which time anyone who has an objection can raise it.
The key words to get Local Authority planners attention is - ‘loss of amenity’ – albeit it to residents, foot passengers, motorists – in that order.

You have to prove that the construction of such a building will results in a loss of amenity to yourself and other residents (however they will/should consider an individuals loss).

This loss will impact upon your quality of life, such as loss of sleep, disruption to your well being or other such issues. List as many as you can so long as you can evidence them. Will it cause an increase in the volume of traffic, the opportunity for crime, atmospheric pollution etc etc?.

As for light pollution, the same applies, but it does depend if you are referring to light from a house, a factory or street lights. If its street lights then most LA’s have a European directive to reduce light pollution and many have begun replacing lamp standards already.

If you supply me with more detail on your problem I may be able to supply better advice.

good looking AND modest
its the same with motorways, I used to live in a little village just off the M62, and for years everyone just got on with their lives, the motorway was there, so what!! was the attitude :dunno: then "one fine day"{a lot more actually} they built a new housing estate half way into the village, ie there were a lot of houses between the new, and the "MWay", lo and behold the "newbies" decided that they didn't like the noise of the traffic 3/4 of a mile away so "protested" until a fence costing 1/2 a million quid was built to "suppress"/ deflect the road noise away from the village, :bang: then they get the hump because the council/highways sent them the bill :}
and in my and other "original" residents opinions it didn't make a bit of difference to the general noise of the village anyway :}
basically twats moaning for the sake of moaning :bang:
like the family that moved next to a farm and complained about the smell of cow shit spread on the Fields each year, :dunno: they even tried to take it to court, but no one would take the job on, :}

Like Ianrobbo - there were some houses built opposite a farm near me - the new homeowners complained about the noise from the farm - can you believe they actually complained about the cows "mooing" on their way to being milked! Needless to say the complaint only made it as far as the newspaper.

Probably the greatest example is Heathrow. The airport was there long before all the houses! Admittedly the aircraft are a lot noisier now but aircraft are having to reduce power so early on take-off to cut down noise it is quite frightening! Light pollution is a problem even her in rural Wales. I think the last time I saw the Milky Way was in the 70s in Saudi Arabia. IS IT STILL UP THERE?The Milky Way I mean. :violin:
