You'll Hate this Water meter reading

A couple of weeks ago some one from my water company turned up on my doorstep and asked to come in and take a water meter reading, no problem I thought, I showed him where the meter was in my bathroom kept out of the way at a safe distance and off he went. Today I got my bill and the reading he took is wrong, according to him I have used 127m3 in 3 months, some how he read 168 as 288. According to their bill that is the equivalent of 2540 showers in 3 months or 28 showers a day, I like to keep clean but really 28 showers a day? Phoned them up and they don't believe me.

Rant over, but don't feel any better

Our meter is read remotely ... Its automatic.. In fact just had our bill in.. £176 which I was pleased with, given we had a builder in for two weeks and he had to knock up a LOT of cement!

When it was fitted they said that it could be read from outside the house, my account has gone from £45 in credit to £600 in debt

If you live alone, should be using no more than 1 cubic metre/day, 1.5 max.
Contact Citizen’s Advice first thing in the morning. When you get through, you’ll initially speak with a general call handler that will take your personal information and basic details of the complaint. A subject expert will then get back to you, usually within five to ten days but the call handler will tell you this.
In the meantime, take a photo of your meter with your phone or a camera with a time/date stamp and continue to do so at as close to the same time every day for the next month. Try and schedule it for a time that you’re never at work. This will demonstrate your water usage over both a daily basis and over a ‘reasonable‘ period, which ought to be sufficient evidence to poo-poo their silly claim.
Don’t put it off, get busy and be sure to take the pictures as close to the same time every day.
