Be careful with the cheap ones. B4 you buy ask about having to get it re-charged in a few years time.

With Plasma you need to get it recharged, with back projection the lamp(s) normally only last for 2000 hours, and they dont make a CRT big enough, so they all have their draw backs..

Why do I want one that size ? Cos I currently have a 36" and I dont wanna go backwards !
I like a big telly.. we use a home cinima projector in the conservatory with a screen size of 8ft by 6ft...
Whilst there may not be much on the box, there is nothing like watching ghost rider on a screen that size with a genuine 100 RMS sound system bblasting out ( to save you the math, that equates to what is today rated as being a 399 watt music power system .. a right load of bollox ! )

John, I had a look in Curry's the other day and they had a LCD 42" rear projection job, crystal clear, better pic than Plasma (LCD is the way to go on TV's) And it was on a 'normal' stand so you can still put the DVD, Playstation under neath like a normal telly, it was bloody good value at ?1499, in fact had I have sold the boat i would have had it there and then.

John thats a load of bollocks, I have had a 56" Toshsiba back projection TV for 7 years now.

What with the wife and daughter the fooken things on 12 hours a day 7 days a week, half the time no fookers watching it, cos they can`t be arsed to turn it off c7u8 Thats approx 30,000 hours so far and still going strong.

The point I am getting to Slowley is that the lamps are still as good as new, and the picture is still bloody ace. The lamps are on there lowest brightness setting and even on the brightest day the picture is still excellent.

There's no such thing as LCD rear projection surely?

A 42" LCD screen is going to cost LOTS
A 42" Rear Projection will have low contrast ratio but is 'cheap'.
A 42" Plasma could be bought for ?1000, but it'd be a low contrast ratio Daewoo suitable for watching in a dark room. Ideally You should look at ?2500+ for a good one.

When you've spent a few grand on screen and sound system, who cares if you have to hang it on the wall?

Personally if I upgrade from my 36" CRT it'll be to a front projection system mounted from the ceiling.

Oh yeah, try asking at Richer Sounds. Check http://www.Dealtime.co.uk http://www.pricerunner.co.uk for prices, and a few Home Cinema magazines for reviews.

John, I was looking for a television last year (not in your league though), and after much 'hunting' around found the cheapest one at JOHN LEWIS. It was a full FIVER! less than all the competition, currys etc but at JOHN LEWIS they gave me (yes, it was free) a 5 year guarantee (back to the store), while all the others wantes 1-200 quid for an extended guarantee That was what did it for me, maybe worth deciding what you want then giving them a try?

 Mate, Happy hunting.

Pugwash, already got a front projection system in the conservatory and it is ace.. Mind you that came with a big red warning:
This unit will stop functioning after 2000 hours due to lamp life.

I thought it was just a timer and I could reset it... ( esp as the lamps are ?415 each ) but noooooo, that is the expected life of the thing..

Cyclops..
Perhaps both my friends who have big ol back projection units have been ulucky.. both had lamp failures within 3 years..
One was so expensive the telly was scrapped the other was cheap enopugh but had to be fitted and set up by the makers engineer which cost a small fortune !

Neither were Toshiba though.. perhaps I should look at what they have to offer :p

you might wanna have a look at LCD projectors..tiny in size only one bulb to replace that is a few quid rather than hundreds..cool for playing games on and watching dvd's..seems the more they cost the brighter the image it projects..personaly i think plasma are crap due to them still being at there early stage of development..five years or so they will be better
buying a grey import is the cheapest way to get any big electrical item these days..and despite all the hype they do repair them under warrenty in the uk..or at least sony do as i checked before buying one myself..saved a packet
