Not so long ago there was a thread on here started I believe by FB, about buying one of those small atomiser bottles and filling it with 50% water & 50% Mr Muscle window cleaner, and keeping it with you when out on your bike, but it came to light that it wasn't recommended as it can cause damage to the visor. I generally give mine a wipe over with kitchen paper and washing up liquid inside and out this also helps prevent misting.

Even better is to use the cheapest ASDA or who ever own brand polish. Has the wax and cleaning stuff but no fancy pong. Also their own brand dusters less than 10p each.

If you really want the best visor and screen cleaner. Go to a Caravan shop and get some 'Caravan Window Cleaner? it?s magic stuff if a little dear, Scratches just vanish.

I don?t subscribe to this idea that these things damage your visor. I've used window cleaner or polish for years with out any effect on my visor. It's one of those, if you clean it 10 times a day for 55 years there might be some damage.

Saw this thread and I just had to reply !

Household cleaning agents are a definite "No No", as they contain solvents which attack the surface of visors. It causes microscopic cracks in the surface of the visor causing a visible haze (if used over time), but worse still, causes an inherrent weakness in the visor, so if hit by a stone, it can just splinter and shatter.

I used to import a "non-solvent based" cleaning and polishing product a few years' back from the US, specifically for plastics (It was used by the USAAF for cleaning the cockpit canopies on their fighter jets). A brilliant bit of kit, but the cost was prohibitive (although a bottle of the stuff lasted at least a year, it was difficult to see the value of ?13.95 in a relatively small package - this was the retail cost to my customers).

So, I recommend soaking a kitchen towel in warm water, laying it over the surface of the visor for a few minutes, and the dead bugs just wipe off. For a good clean, use a vinegar based clear glass cleaner.

Before I got wise to this, I had an Arai visor shatter - I too had been using Mr Sheen.

Neither did quite a few of us until recently!

Yes - I have to say Nige J is absolutely right. The damage caused is all about the strength of the plastic being compromised.

Following the Fat Bert thread mentioned above, Bert did some research and contacted the manufacturers of at least one of these domestic glass cleaners and they recommended it definitely NOT be used on helmet visors!

Your choice.

The point being made is that the damage is hidden!!

We have been advised by the visor makers and the cleaning product makers that the shatter strength of the visor is reduced with the use of this stuff - the longer you use it, the weaker it becomes. So of course you don't see it, but there is a very real danger of the visor giving way when a stone hits it.

But carry on if you're happy with what you're doing, it's your call. We are only responding to the original question.

I know what I'd be doing first thing Monday morning if I'd been using Mr Muscle on me visor for fourteen months!!
