Morning BIF...

As I'm producing the vibration while revving a stationary bike I'm kinda thinking it's not the tyres and chain, but I have checked them anyway.
Is there a point by point checklist for diagnosing the balancer shafts and CCT as I've never had to mess with these before.

to be honest there is so much

stuff on here about it I cannot find a full procedure!!!

If you click on this link........ balancer shafts it gives you some info and also where to find the info!!!!

I know Derek has done it several times with the previous bird, but as for the procedure I am not 100% although I do know it has to be done right and in order!

Bird vibes

Been using a 99 blade and got a 98 bird. Feels like it vibrates more than the blade which is suprising considering the balance shafts.

Reading this forum with interest as I am ablut to embark on carb balance as step 1. :-:

LF, carb balancing on a Bird is the best ! I can usually do it in less than a minute so do not even have to rig a petrol feed up !
They always come in nice and easy ....

I'd give it a little time 'till you get more used to it. Your'e proly just gripping the throttle side a bit too much, particularly with the diffrent riding position.
Think about bending the elbows a little more and getting the arms down a bit further and conciously lossening the throttle grip a little. it took me around 2,000 miles to get really comfy.

As for the last line.....hmmm I'l be discrete, couldn't possibly comment!

First of all sorry for my English

About vibrations on ours birds I thing have the solution.
Many years ago one of my best friend (died with his bird in a stupid accident 3 years ago) owned a bird exactly like my
They have the same color; we take our bird the same day, same days of running always in high ways push some time very hard in to the limit.
At 6 month with 13000 meters on our metes my friend bird start vibrations at first only noticeable around 4k but some kilometers after go worse and between 3500 and 5500 rpm.

Here in Greece the service dealers are only for change oil and filters in our bikes so we try by our selves to find what going wrong (both we are very experience in technical matters because we serving ours bikes from 12 years old)

First we check all bolts in engine and frame we found correct, then we agree and we thing the problem it was in balancers adjustment then we notice a different between my and his bird a slight different in punch mark alignments in front balancer.
We do the dynamic adjuster in the front balancer a slight difference appear but is not the solution the eccentric movement of the balancer shaft move the shaft fwd and aft and adjust the space between the balancer gear and have as result this quit and smooth gears changes that and only that nothing to do with the balancer weight timing which is the our problem.

From the factory all birds coming under correct timing of balancer weights so what happen and in some birds coming vibrations.

Gent open the work shop manuals (Honda or Haynes) and take a good look in our devil.

Between the weight and the gear there is rubbers dampers this is with my humbly opinion the problem, this happen because in the adjustment procedure there is a big hole between whine and clatter (when turning the shaft clockwise whine and anticlockwise clatter) in factory some japs they don?t have very good ears so the limits its close to tight or lose and the rubbers dampers coming weakly soon and change slight the timing of the balancer and have vibrations.

The solution.

Some of birds including my friend bird we change the fwd balancer rubbers dampers and needle bearing and vibrations after adjustments disappears (coming smooth better than my) we are lucky because the fwd balancer its accessible if remove the oil sump with engine on frame.
For the aft need remove the engine and crankcase separation.

Advice

Before proceed in this job do some dynamic adjustments in both balancer one its time test and then return to original position and then to the other test again and when fill some different tight up and proceed with other again some birds shall be coming smooth again at low rpm if vibrations coming close to 8000 leave like this, your bird do that because they want to keep you sharp.

If you proceed this job always change also needle bearings because I don?t really now if it whose the rubbers dampers or needle bearings the problems (both looks like new)

Our birds is not the same every one is different learn to live with them kept shape and sharp and throttle some time to limit its very happy there.

I don?t want hear complains for the brakes again. Tell me who have a crash from breaking with a bird.
This bike is for the real road and not for circuits and in the real word nothing go faster from a point to point from a blackbird (in ground or in air)

I like my bike it?s designed for a reason only.
Keep me free

Vibrating bird

Have November 2004 Blackbird

It vibrates and buzzes mainly at motorway cruising speeds also seems to get worse when top gear is selected.

Bike has only done 2000 miles.
Dont ride it much as vibations send my hands bum and everything else to sleep.

Sold a fireblade because of this type of problem.Thought blackbird would be silky smooth. Will proberbly bye another blade.
Have now tried heavy bar end weights as suggested by jaws has made no noticable difference. Will be riding it down to Jerez in March so will see how it goes.
I think it may be time to ditch Honda and try something different

My 02 model also seems to be a little rougher in top gear. You will probably find that after a while you can get out of the habit of using top gear at anything below the ton and use more of the rev range. What are you calling motorway speeds??? At 70 or 80 mph in top the Bird isn't really in its stride and is best revved a little harder.

The carb balancing defifintely improved things.

I also found my Coolant thermostat was stuck open! Replaced that and this made another step in the right direction. This problem is a bit unusual so shouldn't impact others much.

Fairly happy now and the new chain set due shortly should sort it now.:-:

2001 model.

35,000 miles

Original owner 5 years.

Began to feel the vibrations at 25,000 miles but really began to feel them throughout the bike at the 32,000 mile mark.
Mainly felt between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm but that's where I do most of my riding at anyway. The vibrations disappear when the clutch is disengaged.
I can feel the vibrations at almost any place on the bike and on either side.
I recently changed the chain, sprockets and then the tires during the following week. The new chain and sprockets lessened the vibrations somewhat, and the new tires seemed to bring them right back. Chain is the DID 530 ZVM2, Honda sprockets, Scottoiler. Avon AV45/46 ST tires.

Actually, I replaced the chain and sprockets hoping that the problem would be eliminated but other than that, I've not tried to do anything else on my bike.

Tried an 02 Bird with 14K on the clock before buying mine. It was smooth as a baby's and I really looked forward to picking up my 04 Bird with 9.5K. Huge difference in vibes - so much so I took it to Jaws in case it was a fault. He tried uprated timing chain tensioner and even bar end weights but pronounced her a vibey bitch.

Vibes worst from 3-4.5k revs. Over 4.5 I think it's simply not as noticeable becuase the frequency is higher - just have to keep her over 4k - simple.
Had a similar vibe on a Hornet which was a k nackered chain but I dont think so in this case. Didn't expect manufacturing differences like this from
Mr Honda.:dunno:

I've an 05 'bird on about 2K miles fitted with hugger, Viper pipes and OEM luggage rack. Sends my right hand to sleep after about 10 minutes of top gear 'A' roads at 60 mph upwards (with the emphasis on upwards). Some vibes through the right footpeg too. Really gets on my tits as after a few miles I have to pull in the clutch, release the throttle and shake my arm to get some feeling back into it. Thought it might have been the pipes 'til I read this. I haven't taken it back to the dealers as yet, as I reckon they'll blame the pipes.

BIRD Vibrations (not so good!) carb 1998

Hi, had vibrations at 3500-4000 rpm which came through the bars ,seat everything.
Spoke to JAWS and they recommended that plugs were wrong (original NGK as per manual and Honda dealer) Changed to IRIDIUMs and changed both coils, now running better. The other point is that it occured only after 250 miles!:yo:

YOUR NAME AND LOCATION Michael Rigby, Bradford West Yorkshire

BIKE MODEL/ YEAR/ ETC Blackbird 03

MILEAGE 19400

LENGTH OF OWNERSHIP 7 months

ANY RELEVANT MODIFICATIONS - Bar risers, "double bubble" screen, Givi luggage, baglux tank harness

DETAIL OF PROBLEM - Bars and footrests are vibey between 2500 rpm and 5000 rpm (ie most of time) resulting in tingly feet and fingers, especially left side (clutch and gearchange side)

DETAILS OF WHAT YOU HAVE TRIED TO DO SO FAR - I bought the bike from Colin appleyards in Keighley. At first it was super smooth but then I noticed the tingles on holiday in France. They have checked everything over and found nothing untoward. I thought it might have been the chain but it was replaced with a genuine Honda chain and sprocket kit but the problem still persisits. Bike has been fully dealer serviced with last service at 18000 miles (I know, should have been at 16000 but I had it serviced at 14000 as I was going on European holiday. I will have the next service at 20000)

ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU FEEL IS RELEVANT TO YOUR PROBLEM WITH THE VIBES - I have had weaving problems when new tyres were fitted (Avon azaros). Dealer noticed very, very slight notch in head bearings but nothing to warrant immediate replacement. Just recently, the front brakes have been juddering at low speeds and I believe that one of the discs is warped (new discs on order).
