Valve cap pressure indicarors

Just a reminder to those of you who have these fitted to your bike. Took the bike for mot last week and tester pointed out that the valve on rear was being distorted and was about 45 degree angle from vertical, he reckoned centrifugal force with the pressure indicator on valve was to blame. Also dont be complacent (like i was:wank:) and take the indicator as gospel, indicator on both tyres showed that pressures were correct, but after my friendly neighbourhood chain and sprocket fitter ( LUMPY:k)checked pressures the front was 30 psi and the rear 35psih1d1ng2, as it was wet and i only rode about a mile in 40 mph zone i didnt realyy notice, I have now binned them.. Big thanks to Mac for your assistance and for fucking up my saturday morningp0pc0rn41..

never used them, but on a similar tack, when I got my bike out a couple of weeks ago after its winter hibernation, I road it about a mile around local roads, just to warm it up and it felt awful. I thought maybe it was me that was rusty, but when I got back, I checked the tyre pressures, and oh my god were they low...pumped them up and went back out and what an amazing difference, it felt like a different bike!

I should have guessed before I set off the first time as it was really hard to wheel out of the garage, but I put that down to maybe slightly binding brakes. So remember chaps, if it's hard to walk about pushing the bike, check your TP's pronto.

I've posted before that I think these pressure caps should be banned for being dangerous. They lure people into trusting them and they're generally cheap and no where near as reliable as a pressure gauge.

I check pressures regularly and at the same time check the tyres for glass, flints, screws etc. I'm sure I'd do it less with those caps and I don't see that as a good thing.

With regards them being 30 and 35, I'm amazed you couldn't feel that. Just turning the bars would have felt heavy surely?

I'm glad you posted this thread. The more people that see how shite these things are the better @tu*

It didnt feel heavy, but maybe due to fact I had not ridden it for 5 months I just lost the feel of it:dunno:, not an excuse for me being comlacent though

I had checked pressures in the 5 month lay off

just shit maintenance on a 170mph bike :wank: anyone stupid enough to just jump on a bike after a lay up or even a few days, without doing the most basic of checks needs his arse reaming out !! :wank: :-0)

Rare I agree with a red riding homo but even as a polisher I will not go out unless pressures have been checked in the last week. Bike handling is very sensitive to my mind.

So, you checked them monday, bang on 42psi, thursday front could be 35 psi, but because you checked them in "the last week" thats acceptable then?

Just to be clear about this thread, it was two fold. firstly the advice about valve cap indicators and secondly it was about being complacant towards basic maintainance checks, of which I am both guilty of and ashamed.... :xm,

Yes. It's about probability. Chances are unless I have a problem they will still be ok. If there is a problem that means they might not be ok then that level of pressure loss might happen on a day trip or overnighter. Not checking them after 'over-wintering' is just stupid.
