Does it make a difference?
is it worth the difference in price?

and this question for Rob, is it better than Diesel in the BB

I am willing to bet that the techy guys will jump on this in a minute or two with a lot of unimaginable words........ but I either use normal unleaded, or for a treat, I give her a few tanks of BP "ultimate" unleaded.... It does cost a few pence more, but I find that the extra mileage given by the fuel makes up for that, and it is supposed to clean out your engine as well...

I know its a very subjective opinion, but I do think it gives a little bit of extra power as well.... But nowt proven tho !!

Best wishes to ya DK.

did you see fith gear this week have a look at the there web site.

98 will help give better MPG and keep your engine clean the is some power to be got

I runn all my bike on Optimax when i can get it and I found it just goes better and smother

Super is a waste of money.

The engine is "designed" to run on premium unleaded aka ulpms or PU50

Many thanks guys, I just got thinking today whilst filling the bird up with the usual cheaper unleaded if it really did make a difference and is the difference worth the extra cost.

My understanding is that without knock sensors, using a richer fuel will make no difference. Anyone know if the Bird has them??

Added performance?

All the TDG'd will be on in a minute to claim extra bhp

The engine is set to run best on 95 RON..

I personally have no thoughts either way.. Some folk reckon their bikes go better on the better stuff some say not..
I did try it once but could detect no difference at all.. Not bothered since !

Marginally better than diesel I have to say!

Like Jaws, I did try it once in the Bird and I couldn't notice any difference either.

I used to put it in my M3 as well whenever I could get it as it was recommended for that, but couldn't tell any difference there either.

They are both performance engines of course.... I have heard that it makes a noticeable difference if you put it in a more basic engine.

Not that I know anything about fuel John, but......

My mate (who is a qualified aircraft mechanic and race car engineer) said that it's better to run higher octane unleaded fuels in a high performance motor due to 2 reasons:

1. Higher caloriphic value of the fuel gives more power (proly not much I would guess) but he deffo says it higher than standard 95

2. Less detonation when the engine is under load i.e flame propogation is uniform (i.e the combustion effect pushes the piston downwards on the power stroke) as opposed to detonation where the fuel detonates and 'slaps' the piston downwards

He said standard 95 octane is ok for any engine but ........ if you are running a high performance motor i.e Ferrari, Porsche, superbike etc. where the compression ratio is higher than 10:1 it is better to use 98 super due to the above reasons......

What say you?

Good quality standard unleaded.

Little bit of two stroke oil sorts mine out if it's running a bit rough, and improves mpg
R#?

For engines that have poor airflow characteristics there is no point putting in super however if you have an engine capable of supplying the oxygen to burn with the higher calorific fuel you will get more bhp per bang as per the blackbird.
The bikes are designed to run okay on 95RON cause thats what most people use but they will perform better on 98RON.
As has already been stated if you get more mpg from the 98 cause you are revving less to achieve the same results.
I don't always use it in the bike but had mostly used it in my turbo charged cars where a marked diference could be felt through performance and mpg.
I reckon it would be interesting to put the same bike on the dyno with both fuels to see just what difference there is if any without the forced induction.

I suppose fitting a turbo or nitrous won't help as the engine wasn't designed for those either:k
Depends what you are trying to help. Go to jail quicker? :k
