Yeah right. I went down on the Norland, served through the conflict and almost lost my leg on the slopes of Tumbledown all to further Denis's business interests. FFS.
It was probably in the Daily Mail so it must be true.......

Argentina invaded the Falklands, Thatcher would not have given a shit if her husband’s company wasn’t based there.

Thatcher didn't have a choice in the matter, she wanted to keep her job & didn't want to get lynched absolutely nothing to do with Dennis!

So the fact that Dennis was a major sharehoder & director of Coalite & Coalite was based in the Falklands had nothing to do with it?
The fact that after the Falklands Thatcher closed the mines in England & suddenly she was a millionaire is just a coincidence?
Suppose it makes more sense that she’d decide to protect a cold island that was occupied by a few farmers & sheep & hardly anybody had heard of.

Beaker & Slim, what part do you disagree with? The fact that Dennis thatcher was a Director & Major shareholder in Coalite? Or that Coalite was based in the Falklands? Or do you not agree that after the Falklands conflict Thatcher attacked the mines?

None of the above but I do disagree with the suggestion you made that she defended the Falklands because of Denis & his business interests, that to put it politely is utter B******s

Don't get me wrong I hate that bitch with a passion even now as I am from a mining village & saw what her actions & the bullshit spouted by Scargill did to the community & would never agree with anything else she did but on the Falklands she was right

So it was just a coincidence that Argentina invaded an island that was home to the British prime minister’s husband’s business?
Sorry but I don’t buy that, admittedly it came at a crucial time for her & saved her career.

Derek IMHO

We were digging up coal we couldn't sell or burn and the pits were considering storing the excess back underground in empty pits. :D
Pits had to close and if the baldy twat hadn't been determined to bring down the Government then closure would have happened over time and in an orderly fashion.
Scargill didn't give a shit about the union members, he just wanted to bring Maggie down.

Like Trump today, Maggie needed a good war to distract peeps at home so that she would get re-elected as PM.

In those days, unlike today, people considered Labour electable so she needed a boost to remain in power. A popular war is always a boost to the sitting Government.

Argentina was in the USA discussing withdrawing from the Falklands so Maggie had to act quickly. She ordered the Belgrano sunk even though it was full of cadets, outside the exclusion zone and steaming away home as this would immediately cut off any chance of peace. Don't you just love politicians of any hue.

If it was such a bad thing to close the pits........ why has no Labour government re-opened them?

Hi,
It is a constant failing of many to be blinded by a little bit of education,a inquiring mind, and fuel from a mainly extreme far right press. Wars (air strikes’etc.)by any of our dear leaders are never started by moral conscience being pricked,it’s all about de money!Harsh reality.... If moral values were harmed there would have been a halt to Rwanda genocide, Bosnia, etc. Wars are good....WHAT?? Just ask Boeing ,BAES , Miners losing out ,a terrible shame driven by a annoyed Conservative party, who although it pains me to say ,picked up a lot votes from previous Mining areas.
Why do I feel qualified to add to this thread? 16 years with the Senior Service(FAA)during that happy time I picked up soil in my boots from Ulster,West Falklands and the desert in the Sunny northern gulf states. Now ,where did I put that Sherry.

Sorry but I don’t buy that, admittedly it came at a crucial time for her & saved her career.

The Falklands War came about because of a perfect storm between a latin American dictatorship that was failing and was desperately looking for anything to help them cling on to power - and successive British Governments who 1) didn't believe that the Argies would ever push the button on an invasion 2) had no real interest in the Falklands or their people and 3) in the case of Thatcher.... she was looking to cut back on defence spending and the defence of the Falklands (by running down the Naval Party and withdrawing the Endurance) was any easy (and nicely remote) option. Unfortunately for her, the Argentine junta read that as Britain withdrawing further from what was left of the Empire and went for it.

By maintaining the Endurance as the main British naval presence in the seas around the Falkland Islands, etc. she acted as a "tripwire" to warn of any untoward activity and it was well known that the Argies resented her being there because of that. By giving the Naval Party the extra kit and personnel that they kept asking for (and they asked repeatedly over the years for heavy weapons, more personnel and better facilities) then they would've been better equipped to put up a solid defence against invasion.
Doing both of these things would've definitely helped to further "protect" Denis's business interests.

But no.....you're saying that instead of doing both of those things (the simplest, most logical, most cost effective and already established options conveniently already in place to "protect" Denis's business interests), she instead engineers it so that all the right signals are sent out to an Argentine junta (that was on the brink of collapse) to "encourage" it to orchestrate an economically disastrous invasion just so that she can send 10,000 military and civilian personnel in a cobbled together Task Force half way across the planet in a high risk strategy to reclaim the Islands and thus save Denis's interests.

Maybe you should consider writing scripts for Netflix. They love a good fantasy.

Soooo......... the miners were forced into better jobs and enjoyed good health which made them still alive to reach retirement.

How awful for them.

I sense a "blue touchpaper" moment....

Thatcher was too arrogant to believe the Argies posed any threat to her hubby’s business but when it happened she had no qualms about sacrificing our armed forces to protect her interests.

Anyhow...Back t thread.
Trump is missing the opportunity to waste a few thousand lemmings in Iran...
Whilst they are all treading the streets and false sobbing crocodile tears over a chocolate commander..
The USAF should nuke their feckin streets and be gone with the lot of em.
