Read was the first proper motor-sport celeb that I ever met, quite a moment for a mere kid of 14. Considering he had retired by the time I met him, but I still bought the Phil Read replica Arai last month, as soon as I saw it, I had to have it .... top geezer, just wish I could have seen him ride. I had to make do with watching Sheene and big gay Mick Grant (well, he rode a 'saki, what do you expect me to say? :-0) )

The bloke on the GS1000S in 1980 was Wes Cooley. And as for getting married in '76 on Sat and going to Brands for the Transatlantic on the Sunday ..... well Brands was on the Good Friday. Then Mallory on Easter Sunday and Oulton on the Monday.

Laverda Jota of that era ---- Roger Winterburn if I recall rightly. Must say them was the days - real racing bikes not road bikes race prepped. And all the stars would ride in at least 4 races per meeting. Sheene for example would be in both Transatlantic legs, MCN Superbike race on a 750 and the Shellsport 500 race. God, the poor dears of today would collapse! And none of the riders gave a shit about training and fitness - pint in the bar before a race and a fag on the grid!

Though I couldn't remember his name, I can still picture him, hauling a huge great thing around, all his peers were on full race two strokes tucked behind fairings while he, if I remember correcty, had flat bars and not even a fairing.

Hero.

Thats who I imagined I was as I rode my CB50 home again afterwards. Heh.
Happy Days!R#?
