Ok, so it's 14 minutes long, but well worth it if you can be arsed. The Contradictions of Battery Operated Vehicles:

I've had this argument many times when talking to people with EVs or considering EVs - where does the electricity come from &, perhaps naively, how much more carbon is produced in making an EV when compared to a conventional vehicle?

I'm sure there is also an environmental impact extracting materials to make batteries too.

I don't profess to be anything close to an expert, but IMO, hybrids make more sense, at least until the issue of battery manufacture and range are sorted.

Would have been interesting if the speaker had taken it just that little further & considered end of life recycling. Not sure which way that would have gone but i guess it comes down to how easy/difficult it is recycling the batteries.

To add to what he said, nobody ever talks about the environmental costs to set up so-called renewable energy sources, which is yet another "hidden" cost that the Greens won't mention.
We're fed this myth that they appear as if by magic, much like electric vehicles in the showroom.

Hybrids I can buy into to a certain extent, but I still think that nuclear power has it's place in the field of energy generation, at least for the next couple of decades or so until renewables take over completely.

Heard a professor recently say that transport should be sorted first.

Self-charging hybrids are the way to go. No range anxiety, no need to piss about charging at home or disrupting a journey to find a charger. Use the electric around town, which is where we don't need the fumes, and the engine on the open road. Hybrid-diesels give range and cleanliness. Manufacturers can offer the option of self-charging or plug-in. Job done.

Unquestionably there are issues with EVs….but the underlying issue that doesn’t change is that fossil fuels are a diminishing resource.

Personally I woukd have gone EV this time if;

  1. Anything decent wasn’t silly money (even the very nice KIa EV6 with options boxes ticked was over £60k)
  2. A reliable range of 300+ miles was guaranteed
  3. The charging infrastructure was significantly more evolved

I have to disagree about nuclear power, can you tell me what they are going to do with all the nuclear waste, most of it produced up to now they still haven't come up with a lasting plan to get rid of it

They‘re nearly there, though. I spent a week at the Nuclear Fuel Complex in Hyderabad on a job a few years ago. The energy in the spent fissile rods is astonishing and nuclear facilities across the globe are in a race to harness that energy. One of the boffins at the NFC was telling me that they’re so close. That was five years ago but I guess it’s all relative.

Simple....fire it off into space. Let the Klingons have it.
