The Old Plugged Tyre Chestnut~~~

has raised it's ugly head again

This time Shaun on his Arse 1

Reasonably new back tyre - now complete with complimentary nail - just off the main middle footprint

To plug or not to plug? - that is the question [apologies to Mr S of Stratford]

NO! never try to put a tube in a tyre, as soon as a tube tyre picks up a nail it will deflate very quickly, whereas a tubeless is sort of self sealing due to the thin layer of rubber coating the inside of the tyre, hence if you do pick up a nail (Most times anyway) it will result in a slow puncture.

If a tyre is over 70% worn I would replace it, and plug the other one, to keep as a winter tyre, where temps are lower, so is speed, on a newish tyre, i think the repair would worry me, esp if two up. I bought a rear wheel off e-bay, that now has a plugged tyre on it, to use as a spare shuld I get a puncture at home, simple case to change the wheels over, would rather do that than take the cage to sit in a Jam.

Buy a New One!!!

When I bought my bird s/h it had a dunlop D207 on the rear wheel with plenty of tread on. Whilst Rolfy Dave and I were out one day (making progress) the back end stepped out by about a foot, Cheek Clenching moment in the extreme!! Jenny on the back frightened to speak because she thought she had done something to cause it to happen, (she sat up once on the Trophy when I chucked the bike over a bit hard into a right hander, it was rather tight I will admit we were quite close to the ground with our right elbows lol, and she had been looking at the scenery at the time). We were only about two miles from Rolfy's so I slowed down quite a bit, when we got to Rolfy's and put his tyre pressure gauge on it the reading was 11.5lbs the tyre had been checked before we went out and was at the correct pressure!

We tried pumping it back up and down it went in about 5 mins, we were puzzled to say the least no obviose signs of a puncture or anything, we very carefully examined the centre of the tyre which still looked ok the sides were a bit ragged to say the least (Chunks of tread missing) You guessed it there was a round dot on the tyre that was just a little lighter in colour, from which air was escaping!!! Plug it if you must but I for one would bite the bullet and buy a new tyre.

Your call.
