Are there not operating procedures stating what you do in certain situations?
I am sure that in such a responsible profession that has management and H & S systems in place you will not be held responsible. There is a hierachy, a chain of command and unless you have been negligent or not complied with operating procedures or standing orders you are not to blame. Your supervisor, his manager and the management are responsible. I don't believe you could be sacked Derek.
Try telling that to a certain female officer at a female establishment.
One of the young prisoners ( at risk) was on the floor of her cell banging her head repeatedly on the floor, three female officers went in and using the correct home office approved techniques removed her from the cell and re-located her, when they removed her she had several marks on her face where she had been banging her head, she later claimed that two of these officers had assaulted her during her removal, the Governor (also female) called these two officers up and suspended them and had them escorted from the prison, but to add insult to injury she followed up with (directed to one officer who is a single mother of an eight year old son who she dotes on) "and you can expect to lose your kid" the two officers were told to report to the local police station to face charges, the police questioned them about the girls facial injuries, the officers explained about the girl banging her head repeatedly on the floor, and the numerous times she had done it in the past (all documented) the police are still proceeding with the charges, In all likelyhood the case will not even get to court and the officers will be reinstated, but why should they have this hanging over their heads for doing their jobs? This is why Prison Officers are filled with gloom and despondency, and why I am glad I only have eight years left to serve.
