Tarnished wheels

gypsy

MAN on the PAN
After going on the Welsh run in the shitty weather i washed the bike the following morning and found that all the polished bits were very badly tarnished !
Now ive ridden throughout Derbyshire during the winter in some shitty weather but they have never ended up in a state like this .Has anyone else has had this problem ? as i'm wondering if its got anything to do with this salt treatment they are putting on the roads :dunno:

funny you should say that

I washed my bike about 3 hours after I got home,, just to get all the crud & crap off,,, dried it a bit then stuck it in the garage,, got it out the very next morning to give all my ali bits a good polishing & did notice that there were funny little marks on the wheel polished rims ( not just water marks either) anyway got the Belgum out & hey presto back to gleaming it is.

Did make me wonder though,, imagine leaving it in the garage for a week ( or longer) without polishing the funny spots off,, I reckon they would have been pitted by then. ( would have to paint them then g0551p )

so if I am away for a few days on the bike,, the belgum is coming with me,, even if I can't fit Lornas hair dryer in because of it :}

Grippo~~

Try drying it off with Andrex [or even get the puppy to so it for you]

There's always "Andrex" around when you need it

as you know Edd, my wheels were covered in some realy stick stuff, and as Ive got powder coated wheels they should have just "rinsed" off, but this "tar" like substance was a real twat to get off, and although weve got some "dumb" comments I for one am as concerned as you m8, :dunno:
has anyone any "sensible" answers please, :dunno:

WD is the one for me, Ive just been out and used a bit on me wheels, :eek:
and as I've got powder coated wheels and stuff, anything harsher would end up scratching the brilliant finish Rich66 took so much time and effort to acheive :bow:
it still doesnt answer the question that, what IS this shit that a couple of us seem to have on our bikes, (all colours) :rolleyes: and as been said already, if someone dosnt wash the bike after getting the stuff on the alloy what would it be like after a couple of days,??? :dunno:

If it is from the new road salt, which is a sugar beet based substance, then I wouldn't like to think what damage it could do, this is sugar in a raw form, (we feed it to our horses) and when mixed with water it expands, but sugar is corrosive when wet (try some on a computer circuit board) so my advice is to wash it off as soon as possible.

In Staffs they have been covering the roads with the usual rocksalt, but, they have alson been adding a solution to it. What this wonder liquid is I have no idea but those that are in staffs may have noticed on the gritting lorry, along each side there are very large polyprop tanks that contain the suspect fluid, its sprayed as the spread the grit. If this is eating into our P&J's after just a few hours WTF is it doing to the underside of our skates ???
