They mentioned the cats eye cameras on the radio news.The ones tested in scotland take the speeding cars registration and displays it on a screen to shame the driver,there is no further action taken for the offence (fine,ban etc).But I suppose that will change later.

RELAX.....

....... I just saw a report on these intelligent catseye's on Sky news. Jaws was right - they are on test on a 3 km section of the M8, east of Glasgow.

They interviewed the technician bod in charge of the project and he said that their intelligence capacity is limited to monitoring traffic flow speed in general for the purpose of transmitting this general data to traffic control centre in order that they can slow down the traffic before it reaches the congestion (the catseye's will flash red) - in other words traffic management, like the units you see hanging off the bridges. Eventually, the catseye's would be capable of controlling the speed advisory signs, and turn on the flashing facility automatically.

When Sky pressed him on the issue of speeding spies in the catseye's he said there was not the technology to put number recognition devices in these units and nor were there any plans to develop them for that purpose.

If number plate recognition cant be used by these cameras then how will they be able to put your number up to "embarass" you into slowing down?.

The cameras in use in the cats eyes are just cameras. They are linked to local software which determines what use they are put to. They are not set up to catch speeding motorists at present. As far as I know they register oncoming trafic.

I've been working through in Edinburgh for the last few weeks and using the M8 only when I'm in a hurry (sod's law). This thread really worried me so I've asked around and kept a look out. The cameras are indistiguishable from other cat's eyes except at a few yards, and only the fact that a bit of the road has been dug up to put the in helps me spot them. They are on the westbound carraigeway between Harthill and the A73 turn off. Good thing so far is that my doormat has been letter free (up 'til now) so maybe they are not being used for speeding (yet) but they are capable of a lot more than that. Take care...

Hiya Rob,
Hows the sausage franchise going M8 :}
Translation of the above hi-lighted = The technology for implementing numberplate recognition systems into catseyes is too expensive at the moment, we do not plan to develop them until it is clear that we can make a usefull profit from thier deployment :eek:
