As an AOL user Simon, no, that is not true for you as the viri will not 'understand' you address book anyway mate..

Just moved into Trace's place and set up both our computers on a network. This meant dumping my Freeserve (Wanadoo) account and sharing Trace's AOL one.

I always used Outlook Express on Freeserve....and got upwards of 30 spam e-mails and other crap every day. Since using AOL, no spam, no virus alerts and so far, I'm happy. The spam blocker thingy seems to work well.

Now watch it all go tits-up !!!!!! :}

These automated things are always aimed specifically at the poor buggers who for one reason or other still use Express or similar.

Folks, I would urge you all to ditch express and get an aftermarket mailer.. yes, you might have to pat a tenner for it ( for life ) and yes it might be a bit fiddly to set up, but once done, and used in conjunction with something like the free to download GV virus detector all will be well :p

Jaws, despite the shortcommings of express, thats an inadequate answer, especially since for some who use integrated applications that integrate into express, and will be pained to ditch this functionality, you may as well reccomend that everyone ditch Windows XP as their operating system, because that is likewise vulnerable.

Bottom line is there is someone with a lot of connectivity to the group with an infection, and looking at the wide spread, ie the diversity of people infected, I suspect that the root may be close to admin level.

Now that is a decent idea.. It would save me about 50 plus emails every week caused entirely by folk using XP who do not understand the security issues it brings.. Also get rid of all the SP2 issues that are coming up all over the place.

Maybe, just maybe, people are starting to realise how badly flawed the platform is and why MS saw it as nec. to put in the goto ability !

Sooner XP starts hitting the bit buckets around the word the sooner I will like it !
So I will indeed temper my reply to CB with the following..
Get shot of fookin XP as well ! LOL !!

buy a mac and never think of viruses again. Abd before the smart alecs brigade speak about viruses designed for mac, the number is infinitesimal compared to the ones designed for windows, so shut it already. Windows interface design is a very poor copy of mac's anyway.

I know Mac users love to indulge in the Windows is a copy myth but if you really look very carefully into ancient history you will be forced to conceed it simply isnt so :p

When your life can be measured in months, weeks, days and minutes it really takes the fun out of it.

Skippy, DOS was running without windows on top until quite recently (11 or 12 years??) while MacOS existed for a while already... and then, Windows appears, and looks like a bad copy of MacOS... So if not a copy, what explains the astonishing similarities? :dunno:

Pierre my fine feathered garlic connissieur Windows started development as "interface manager" in september 1981 and was announced as windows 1.
0 on November the tenth 1983, Steve Jobs unveiled the Macintosh on January 24, 1984 the operating sytem was known then as Mac sytem software which was little more than the finder and a set of tools.

Windows was under development long before the Mac was even dreamed up by Apple as for the astonishing similarity as you put it ........

you try and design a GUI that looks signifigantly different to Mac OS, Windows, KDE, or any other of the obscure alternatives .....its nigh on imposible :p

If it was left to Apple we would probably be 5-10 years behind where PCs are today, and the internet would not be in in current form for another 10-20 years.

The IBM compatable PC was an accident, albeit it was in response to the Apple 2, but the success of the PC today lies in a combination of IBM dropping the ball when they designed the PC, and Microsoft making the DOS operating system available to virtually anyone.

Were the PC not a reality, then we would probably still be stuck in a world where there were a dozen flavours of desktop computer, with a dozen operating systems, all as accesible and as customisable as your TV set (ie not), and any software you wanted would be restricted to only that flavour of machine.

But, since the PC is a reality, and we live in a world where you can do virtually anything you want with it, its strange that one of the most common whinges is that its not an Apple Mac!!!!!

Skippy I bow before your infinite knowledge... but I remember computer about 15 years ago - the common PCs were running DOS and not Windows, while Macs were already running MacOS, smooth as a baby's bottom, unlike clumsy DOS, all graphic departments were using macs and not PCs and Windows is still to this day clumsy, bad, smelly, in other words shite compared to MacOS, and macs are nicer, slicker, and faster than PCs, so there :neenaw:
As for the internet, Microshaft jumped on the bandwagon like all the others, its the US army who developped it, soi double there :neenaw: :neenaw:

True the internet concept was originally designed by the US military, but without the prolification of computers which was made possible by the PC it may never have developed much beyond that.

Mac/Lisa OS was originally nicked from the Xerox PARC OS, Xerox Sued Apple whilst Apple was trying to sue Microsoft :} after 4 years of legal action the cases were thrown out of court as it was proven that Apple did not invent the GUI and was not able to hold patent on it.After that both Windows and MacOS were developed along side each other in a cross licencing arrangement between Apple and Microsoft in the eighties and nineties with many of each others freatures being used by both, just spare a thought about what would have happened to Apple if Microsoft hadn't bailed them out to the tune of $150 million in 1997 .............certain bankruptcy and no more Macs............... Apple would have dissapeared up its own arrogant corporate orifice.

Like it or not you owe Billy Gates :neenaw:

Skippy, all that might be true, but macs are still miles ahead of PCs, as for arrogance hard to beat Microshaft and i don't owe jack to Bill, it was in their interest that Apple continue to run... Apple stupidly sacked Jobs then went on their knees for him to come back and he did his magic, and anyway, PCs are shite, macs rule, that's an intergalacticly known fact :neenaw:

Hmmmm that would be why the Mac is now relegated to a niche market for desktop publishers and upwardly mobile executive types looking for an overpriced, underpowered piece of Bling on their desktop.
