Don't talk to me about back brakes. Couple of years ago I took my bird to a P&D motorcycle for an MOT and they failed it on the back break. Took it away disassembled the caliper, gave it a deep clean and fitted new pads. It still failed. They said it was probably this bit ere that had failed and would cost a fortune to replace. Spoke to John about de-linking the brakes and he went off on one about incompetent arseholes. The upshot of which was, I took the bike to a different garage (Jumbo Breakers) and they passed it with flying colours. They even offered to back me for a complaint against P&D to VOSA though I couldn't be arsed with all the hassle. Needless to say, I've not set foot in P&D since.

The tester I used had a special custom made tool he used when testing linked brakes on the rollers at Mot time...a,ruddy great lump of 4x4 they he used to trick the measuring system if my Bird looked like failing on the rear brake.

Sometimes common sense is better than the rule book.

Mine didn't fail on the pads (failed on the HID headlight) but it was a comment that they would need replacing soon. I have no problem with that and it gives me a chance to learn how to do it myself. I'll have me phone in one hand talking to John, manual in the other and Mrs P can do the work :D

Come along, Beaks. Common sense is a dying attribute and seems to be diminishing with each generation.

It was much better years ago, when they just rode round the yard to test them. If they hit the wall at the far end it's probably a fail. Unless you had a classic with drum brakes, then it's a pass if it manages to slow down before impact.

I have tested a couple of birds the easiest way is to have a fat mate holding it in the rollers (or at least trying) to be honest its not the recommended way but it works well enough to get a figure on the tester & you already know if its good enough by then anyway (20% of the front) the tester isn't linked to the computer so fudging a figure slightly isn't unheard of after a ride around the yard ;)
