I got a new rear 020 for me bike last week and a guy within me bike club said his son can fit it for me. So after a brief negociation a time and date was set.
I turned up with wheel and tyre as did me mate, (Two Avons for him), and this guys son sets to work. Managed to get me mates front avon on ok but couldnt get the rear one on. Blames the compressor and tries with mine. After some struggling there is a god almighty bang and a gouge has been removed from the side wall of my tyre.
Cut a long story short, there is a godalmighty row brewing over this, he wont replace the trye cos he'll be out of pocket, etc, etc. Then, in the argument he tells me that a dealer has seen the tyre and said its fine. Now, without a picture I cannot show you the damage but what I can do is discribe. The gouge is approx 3 inches long and is half to an inch above the rim and follows the contour of the rim. Most of the gouge is superficial but what bothers me is at the end of it, there is steel webbing exposed.
I have spoken to several experienced tyre fitters and discribed how the fitting was being done and it seems that his son, albeit trained by ATS was doing it wrong. He was trying to fit a tyre with the bead in place, not pushing the tyre down into the well.
Hopefully I will be collecting the tyre tonight and I'll try and get a picture posted but from what I have posted here, what say you? Should I get another opinion?
