I think rear seat belts became compulsory in about 85 or 86. As traffic law and construction and use regulations are very rarely retrospective I think you are safe to buy the van and not worry about having to fit them.

Exactly right. Had a 1970 land rover with the same seats and no belts at all. It didn't have to have them.

Not needed Andy - the lads at work did the Gumball3000 this year in a classic 60's VW camper, didn't have the benches running longways but they never fitted belts. Fook being in the back of that, it did 140mph and would broadside out of bends!

Camper would suit you mate :-:

I don't think you have to wear belts in a commercial vehicle if they're not fitted?

I do now that you can actually buy brand new camper vans without seatbelts in the back - don't know if it's legal to carry passengers in those seats though.

I think that the rules for camper vans are different to other vehicles.

I'd suggest that if it has a current MOT that might give some comfort?

I'm pretty sure however that the sideways bench seats you talk about do not need 'em. We've got some transits in work like this and they certainly don't have 'em and I think they are less than five years old.

Can't see how sideways bench seats could usefully use seatbelts as the forces would tend to be sideways.

As the sometimes patriarch ( and sometimes ignored old geezer ) of a family with a few campers attached to it, I would suggest you think long and hard Andy..

To start with it all seems like a brill idea.. and I really do not want to rain on you mate, but..

But then reality starts to kick in

1) They are NOT a practical all year form of transport due to the low gas miles they deliver

2) They are SLOW..

3) They are even slower that slow

4) Most folks think they are gonna use them all the time.. Then it is ..err well at least once a month.. then before you know it they are standing around 50 weeks of the year.

5) Insurance on them is not cheap.. in fact nothing about them is cheap.

We have done three year on year costings.. for both my eldest daughters lot when all the kids were still at home ( 4 ), and for my son with his two kids.

In each case it would have been cheaper, easier and viewed by the kids as more fun, if they had used PUBLIC TRANSPORT and booked into a middle of the range hotel !

Talking to owners who do seem to enjoy having a camper van, they fall into two distinct catagories

The ones who go to all the camper rally things ( a bit like Gold Wing owners but they take up less of the road ! LOL !), join the clubs and do silly games and stuff..

The ones who are into stuff like surfing, have no home life and spend every weekend of the year away in the thing..

A friend of mine goes to lots of open air concerts, and he got fed up with the camping in tents lark, and having stuff nicked, so he bought a motorhome, he reckons it is the best thing he did.
