Hi,

Just upgraded my V3 Tom Tom to V5 for the cheap sum of ?47 pounds...........what a waste of money...potential of upgrade is great reality is RUBBISH.............despite many hours trying to sort including download of patch (V5.1) the system still hangs up runs slow and generally has a mind of it's own.....................save you money and either change brand or stick with V3

Recently bought a TomTom Go 300.......came with version 5.1 pre-loaded. Maybe I've been lucky but I can't fault it !!! It takes a minute or two to work out where it is when I first power it up but from then it performs without a hitch.

Have you tried e-mailing TomTom at all RM ??? :dunno: Could be worth a go.

Are you using a Go 300 ?? Just a thought, but if I back up my TomTom memory card, download it onto my computer, zip it up, then e-mail it to you, could you transfer the file via the USB cable to your TomTom's card ?? :dunno:

Used mine today to find an address in a town I'd never been to before. Put in the postcode and door number and it took me right to it !!!

Let me know if the above idea is feasible ??? :dunno:

Using Navigator 5 on Dell PDA X30 @ 624mhz and 512 Mb SD card. Don't think Tom TOm GO is compatable, but thanks for the very kind thought...!

Started to hit all the web-site to seek out solutions. First obvious problem is that the solutions don't seem to be the same (i.e. one persons solution seem to solve about 50% of the people with the same problem..........!) I've tried most fo the solutions and the system is getting worse....! :xm

Tom Tom 5

I haven't had the problems that everyone else seems to have had with the software crashing etc.........I use Tom tom 5 on a pocket PC

But I am quite disappointed in the new version......the old one was a lot more customisable (is that a real word?)....You could change the order and choose what appeared on what menu etc.....the map, however, ( if you use the enhanced version)....is a lot more detailed and has a lot of updates....using the itinary function is a lot easier than it was......but overall, I think it isharder to use and I prefered the functionality of the older version.......

If it wasn't for the updated and more detailed maps, i would go back to V3

Not the best upgrade I have ever made and certaionly not worth ?50!!

Tom Tom 5 - help is at hand

Unlike the rest of you you who seem to be having problems, I also upgraded to V5 and found it to be much better.

I was using a Dell Axim 5 (later stolen after my off in Spain so now have bought a Dell Axim X30 and it works great).

At first I did find V5 a little confusing, but after playing around with it for a couple of hours and delving deep into the menus, I found it to be much more user friendly. The itinery planning is much better and very configerable.

I used this to plan each route every day in Spain and it never let me down once. Bert will confirm this. This only problem I encountered was where there was poor satalite coverage - but even Berts Garmin suffered from the same problem.

If its falling over it can be one of two things.
1 - you have other things running in the background using up memory.
2 - it dosent like third party add ons such a speed camera locations.
3 - the GPS aerial can be breaking down (I had this problem with a GPS aerial that plugged into the CF card slot - the vibration caused it to crash as soon a I started moving). I repleaced the aerial with the Tom Tom hard wired one and problem cured.
4 - the car PDA holder will break internally (printed circuit board) due to virbation if used on a bike. To cure this open up the holder (four screws on the rear) and with a hot glue gun, seal all the compents together, effectively encasing them in a resin block. This stops the vibration of compents and cures that problem. (did this with mine)

Take off all software and reload it fresh. Gets rid of all old clutter and provides a cleaner system.

If none of this helps, chuck the fecker in the canal.

Buzz.

Very interesting that you are able to run version 5 on Axim X30 (same as mine). I'd agree that the new version looks very good, but it keeps on falling over...............!

i have done a hard re-set, been on Dell and Microsioft sites for ALL upgrades available and then repaced Tom Tom version 5 and upgraded to 5.1........thing was not better tahn before all the effort........... c7u8

Noticed that many people are running same PDA's with Total PDA selling slower versions with Tom Tom 5 installed....thsi just makes me feel worse......!

Have writtern to Tom Tom for advice twice, first time was the hard re-set suggestion...............this time they have offered to collect and test my PDA and associated kit to see if they can resolve the problem..............To be honnest it apears to be a fantastic customer service offer (at face value) shame you have to post them a letter every time you want help / advice, They do turn things around very quick 3 days from letter posted to email answer...........just seems ery remote..........!

Will post when they have returned my kit..........! :h

Rob.
Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with this kit, its bloody annoying when things wont work properly, been there, done that.

When its right, its a fantastic bit ok kit and asI say, I used it to plan all our routes from Santander, to Jaca, to Anndorra, to Biesca before having my off. I swear by tomtom as being one of the best on the market.

I strongly suspect theres something wrong with your aerial.

Good luck with after sales service, let me know how it goes.
