Thinking of going to milau for the bridge and gorges. Will be heading back via dieppe. Can anyone recommend anywhere on the way up. Was looking at St etienne for starters, anywhere else worth a look?

Millau is a great trip, plan to spend a day or 2 down there enjoying the roads and scenery. Easiest and most fun way to come back up initially is the A75 up to Clermont Ferrand which has decent fuel prices just off the autoroute. Keep an eye out on the fun autoroute sections for speed traps, they tend to wait in the twisty bits c7u8!

Definitely agree normally, and Clermont Ferrand to Boulogne on N & D roads (including deviating near Paris to have a look at Versailles after dark, unmissable!) is within a few minutes of Clermont Ferrand to Calais on autoroutes. More fun and less fuel too... But the A75 north of Millau is an exception, like a N road but multi-lane, mainly empty and superbly surfaced. No toll too...

This may be a bit late, agree with the N75 via Clement ferrond, great road, also the Tarn du gorges is well worth a ride, the scenary is spectacular., if you go a little further East, you could jump onto the N85 route de Napolean, great road and scenary,
enjoy

Possible change of route dieppe down to santander next week. Only 7 days though. Anywhere good on route.

If you have 7 days to get from dieppe to santandar, I would still go down the Central massif area, and take in Millau Bridge, well worth the ride. The West coast of France is pretty flat compared, but if its fast straightish roads you want, West is good.
