Ovo energy has just contacted us to say we need to put up our gas/elec direcct debit by £65 to £175 a month. When Mrs L went on-line to increase the DD, it wouldn't accept anything less than £195, probably due to the standing charge increasing by 100% +. Last December we voluntarily increased our monthly payments to £90, so £110 increase in 3 months. This is on their variable tariff. from what I understand, the cheapest fixed tariff starts at £250 per month.

What I don't get is we're always in credit by £3-400 every autumn having built this up during the summer. Currently we're in credit by £187, just as the energy useage starts to drop off.

Just been to see my mum who happily isn’t exactly short of a bob or two - that is relevant to what follows. She was moaning about how long it is taking to get her DELIBERATE overpayments to her failed energy supplier back. I have long counselled her to stop overpaying but she never has….today she revealed an absolutely belting bit of information…”I always did it as I would go away on holiday with Probis (civil service retirement organisation) in October and I woukd get a refund from the energy company in September every year and use it to pay for the holiday.”

I just sat there shaking my head.

Good that the chancellor cut fuel duty by 5p.

Not so good that my two nearest fuel stations put their prices up midday today by 4p a litre.

I noticed the local Shell station out its petrol down a couple of p at lunchtime. It will be interesting to see how they want when I walk past tomorrow.

it was 172.9 petrol and 183.9 diesel - then the petrol went down to 169.9 but diesel was the same.
