Rant .....Oxford English Dictionary

Heard on the news this morning something that really pisses me off

It's annual update time for that Bastion of English'ness..

The Mighty Oxford English Dictionary

As usual they have looked for new words to include

BUT.........and here's the rant.........

due to printing restrictions they are limited to the number of pages thay can print.

So............

To make way for new words - some old ones have to be removed

For fooks sake....

They have now included the word "Yo" as a modern teenage greeting

They have included "Who's in Da House" as another modern question

To make way for these supposed new words they have reomved some of the good old traditional English words

First word to be taken out was "Gullible"

What is the world coming to ?

Discuss?

Perhaps they removed "gullible" because they don't like words that are self-descriptive.

eg.We must be GULLIBLE allowing ourselves to put these stupid new words in our dictionary.

Don't disagree with you FB. (I much prefer the double negative, a little more subtle). Anyway.

If there is a genuine new word then it deserves a place but only if it meets certain criteria.
I would like to think that the OED panel do use strict guidelines and crieria but in the examples you quote, IMHO an error of judgement has been perpetrated.

Slang expressions that are fashionable for a limited period IMHO should not be included and certainly not at the expense of a still often used word.
Yes languages are dynamic and evolve and there is a case for archaic words not being included but they could be in a another separate edition.

Really~~~~?

I still resent your remarks

But please carry on paying 40% tax to subsidize me to allow me to live in the manner and style to which I have become accustomed

Thanks you :)

You're a big boy now. You'll get over it.
I have no problem with paying taxes at the level I do. It is still a fact that higher tax payers allow others to pay less.
Only too pleased to help.

From your post, it is obvious that you don't have access to the dictonary, otherwise you would have spelt "removed" correctly!!!! :neenaw:
