I know Ian thinks differently, but here's my tale.

Following the reg/rec failure yesterday I called the RAC. They gave me a wait time of approximately 90 mins. I got a call shortly after saying the van would arrive by 3.15pm (1 hour).

The bloke arrived and after discussion and explanation of the symptoms he decided to change the reg/rec. He rang a local dealer in Penrith and we went to pick up the part. We removed the tailpiece together and he replaced the reg/rec. He then diagnosed the battery was fried. We suspected this but could not prove it 'til the reg was replaced. Off he went to get a battery from the same place, fitted it and off I went home. Three hours in total from call to mobility, but a friendly jocular bloke who was good company for a couple of hours.

And finally a big "thank you" to Penrith Motor cycles for letting me have the reg on approval and then paying for both that and the battery over the phone as the RAC man was on his way to collect the battery.

And apologies to Jaws. If they'd brought me home I would definately have had a new one off him.

Come on you Hatters
I'd been with them since I was 18, over 20 years, and until a few years ago always found them very helpfull.

But, last callout, my partner got to me with my trailer quicker than they did, and it was a bloody cold december night.

At the next renewal I noticed they had removed Vans from their cover, a phone call later it turns out this had been on there for quite a few years. Now as my main vehicle is a van, I had an issue with that.
Now I am with Direct line, they cover ALL my modes of transport, all covered in europe as well, and any vehicle I break down in, and the same for my partner for about ?160.

Ive since heard that they have reduced the number of there own guys by a huge amount, so its even more likley than ever before you'll just get a local machanic from a local workshop. If thats the case you might as well just go with someone like Direct line. Don't see why I should pay another ?100 to get the same guy sent to me by a diferent organisation.

Twas an RAC van that came to me.

In the past I've been with AA and Britannia rescue/csma. I've found them all to be pretty much the same, but this cover came with the bike policy, so I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome.
