I know Ian thinks differently, but here's my tale.
Following the reg/rec failure yesterday I called the RAC. They gave me a wait time of approximately 90 mins. I got a call shortly after saying the van would arrive by 3.15pm (1 hour).
The bloke arrived and after discussion and explanation of the symptoms he decided to change the reg/rec. He rang a local dealer in Penrith and we went to pick up the part. We removed the tailpiece together and he replaced the reg/rec. He then diagnosed the battery was fried. We suspected this but could not prove it 'til the reg was replaced. Off he went to get a battery from the same place, fitted it and off I went home. Three hours in total from call to mobility, but a friendly jocular bloke who was good company for a couple of hours.
And finally a big "thank you" to Penrith Motor cycles for letting me have the reg on approval and then paying for both that and the battery over the phone as the RAC man was on his way to collect the battery.
And apologies to Jaws. If they'd brought me home I would definately have had a new one off him.
