Just got tickets thru for August, going with Brittany ferries on the Normandie Express, anyone done this crossing, any comments, do you have to take your own tie downs?

Done this a few times and the crossing has always been smooth as glass. As said above, best supervise the tie down bit, or at least make sure you are happy with whats done. Leave bike on side stand and in 1st gear and disable alarm. Those fastcraft can bounce around a bit if the water is choppy!

............and I've done it once (coming back to UK) and it was the roughest ever for me............waves breaking on the 8th deck windows of one of the 'slow' ferries!

I use Brittany ferries a lot and I have never had a problem with the way they tie bikes down even if the rope and cushions look shot ....but I also always take old T shirts to prevent any rope rubs on the paintwork.

They do not help you 'untie' so if you want a quick getaway it is best to get to your bike as soon as you are allowed.

Enjoy the trip.

.

Tis true. I once watched a couple with a brand new Harley staring dumbfoundedly at all the other riders removing ropes and they did nothing. Eventually (because I am a kind hearted soul) I went over and told them they wouldnt be getting any help from the crew. Their answer? "We've never undone knots before!" And they were in their mid 50's!

Perhaps an older version of that girl that parked her car on a railway line because the sat-nav took her down that way?

Na, what eric meant was that he was waving from the eighth deck, at the seagulls, like the queen.

Nah it wasn't, that was the only ferry to set out across the channel that day!
Loading was 'fun' with fork lifts at either side of the metal loading plate lifting and lowering the plate trying to get it somewhere near ground level - you just had to take a run at it ................... wet metal plate, nice.
All this was helped by the fact that I had put my back out (doing some building work in France) and couldn't move my right leg..... I had to be lifted off the bike by some other riders when I got on the ferry .............. and lifted back on when I got to Portsmouth ............. happy days!

Ive done this crossing a few times its quicker than the normal crossing as you would expect no probs getting on or tying down .On the return trip once the ferry got cancelled coz of bad weather condition and we had to wait a year and a half for a slow boat.I would recommend if u havnt alraedy go club class its only about a tenner. You get free coffe papers and a glass of bubbly.you are also away from the screaming kids there is noplace to hide like on a normal ferry.Hope you have a gr8 trip.
