any one watched watchdog today? a lot of bikers have lost their right to ride motorcycles due to a cockup by dvla where they didnt issue the entitlement and after 2 months they destroy the old license so there will be no proof that you ever had a bike license
if any one applies for a photo license examin the license carefully yo make sure all your entitlements are on there,it seems a third of licenses are cocked up by dvla

Category H - Tank (track vehicle) entitlement... My dad lost his Category A entitlement and was unable to 'prove' he'd passed his bike test...

What amazes me is that this has only JUST come to light.. a guy in my local club fell foul of it 18mnths ago.. He ended up having to take the test again !!!

If I decide to bother to change my licence I will take it to the local court house and get them to fotocopy it and anotate/date stamp it.. Costs between 10 and 40 quid but could save you a LOT of heartache and grief in the long run !

Happened to me

Many years ago, I was stopped for speeding on the M6, produced my docs at my local nick and after checking my licence the nice officer asked me what bike I was riding. 900 Kawasaki says I. Oh ok, says nice officer, then I am going to do you for not having a full motorcycle licence.

It seems that somewhere along the line the letter entitling me to my full licence hadn't been typed in by the equally nice people at Swansea when I changed my address.

Took legal advice and discovered that apparently this happens a lot, some folks applying for a provisional licence even end up with full ones, due to the same typing errors... Only way to prove I had passed my test was to contact the test centre where I took my licence 10 years previously.

Only trouble was, they only keep records for 7 years :bang:

So it was CBT time for me.

Don't think the Post Office route works though, you still have to send your licence away as far as I can see and as that is your only means of proof....

Didn't see the programme but I have read that DVLA won't accept photocopies or anything other than a pass certificate as proof, so if they mislay your licence.... %$fan

If you keep your previous insurance certificates and on the basis that when changing insurers they insist on you submitting at least copies (if not the original) license, would this not add weight to your case?

Anyway, I think this is just simply fcuking awful. What the fcuk is going on in this country? The inland revenue are just as incompetent now. The number of clients I have who have been fcuked about with in one way or another through the IR's errors is alarming and let's face it, it's potentially people's lively hoods they're messing with. - right, rant over................................for now.

Don't think that would work, as it's still a photocopy, and photocopies can be doctored. I am sure I read in MCN (or maybe the Sun, hang on they're both the same?) that even an IAM instructor was having problems! Despite the fact that he had to have had a full licence to take his AIM they still wouldn't accept it!

One way round it would be, when changing details, tell them you have mislaid your licence, get them to issue a duplicate, they cost the same as changing to a photo one, and then if they make a mistake you have proof.

I bet they still find a way to get out of admitting their mistake though...

DS, a like minded soul, if I could hatch a plan to be able to afford to live abroad, I would be gone in a shot. There is so much wrong with this country it isn't true.

Does that qualify as a full or partial rant?

Well for me it would be simple. Go to the court that awrded me points on my licence. The courts would have realised had I not had Full Motorcycle entitlement.

But because of this I have scanned both parts and filed them as i am about to send away for change of address
Oh well soon find out!

soon as you get your new licence have a good look at it,so long as you notice any mistakes straight away you shouldnt have a problem

this was in MCN about 6 weeks ago................

a motorcycle examiner / instructor who had been teaching / testing for years had lost his entitlement but DVLA still wouldnt believe he had a licence even though he was a qualified instructor.......................

Surely if you had been caught speeding or anything like that in the past you would have evidence that you had a full licence at the time of teh offence.:dunno:
