just had a renewa email on a property insurance....no less than eleven pdfs attached, none with any indication of what they are.

How to lose business.

That and the renewal premium was ridiculous so I have gone elsewhere, saved a bundle of cash and got a better policy to boot.

When will these businesses wake up and learn that excessive automation and telephone systems where you have to go through multiple layers of 'press one for so and so' telephone systems and then listen to gormless electronic music is not how to survive long term?

Makes my blood boil.

When will insurance companies learn that renewal time is not fleece time.
If more people did the same as me the practice may well stop
If I get a renewal notice I do not like, I call them and cancel..
Let them go though all the rigmarole of 'oh, just let me see what I can do', then cancel, telling them if they could do it for that amount as far as I am concerned they tried to rip me off.
So fay, in about 30 years of doing it, I have always ended up with a better deal from a different company.
I usually end up back with the same company after a few years, but I do not care.. I just want a good deal

I admire your determination john. I agree with the theinking.

I just can't be arsed changing providers normally - providing the exorbitant renewal premium is reduced to a sensible level I normally just stick with them.

Having said that, I have moved two buildings policies this month as I was able to get better cover for less money.

It certainly pays to pay attention at renewal time!!

And that attitude is precisely why the insurance companies continue to try and rip people off..
Not that I blame you either.... I just cannot sit still when insurance companies dealing with vehicles in particular try it on.
They are piss poor at paying what they owe, and damnably slow too.. In fact as far as I am concerned the insurance businesses are JUST short of being downright con artists..
If they were in a business that people did not need by law they would not last five minutes

I'm with john on vehicle insurance renewal, I get on compare the market every year & always end up with the same cover for less than the renewal & occasionally less than the previous years insurance, Swinton & Bennetts consistently come up as the top two almost every year for the bikes

What did make me laugh a few years ago, I got the renewal from Bennetts so did the usual as above & Bennetts came up at 60 quid cheaper than the renewal, when I phoned them they said oh we cant match the online prices those are for new customers only o_O so each year I do the same & am classed as a new customer (online) despite often being with the self same company

That's a bit harsh john - I did make the point that I go back and get a more realistic renewal quote from existing insurer rather than simply accepting the 'rip off' renewal quote.

Some forms of insurance are a pain in the ask to move from one provider to another as well, so the hassle factor is part of the decision making process. Not helped in my case by the fact that of the eight insurance policies I have for various things six of them expire within three weeks of each other in December!! (Yes, I know, awful sentence construction....!)

Each renewal, whether for insurance or utilities, I search for the best value product. With the utilities if they say it's new customers only I just change the name from either my wife's name to mine or vice versa, they have yet to stop this practice based on address.

My comment was not aimed at you Andy and I did say I do not blame you for the reasons you give :)

What is really stupid is that sometimes 'the computer says it can't do that'.

I have a property that is empty at the moment and not unreasonably the building cover premium is very high - about £450 unoccupied v £130 occupied on the same policy. The policy allows for 60 days without occupant at any time at the lower rate.

The buildings cover expires on 21 December and someone is moving in on 9 January.

So until the policy expires I can use the 60 day rule to continue paying the lower rate. However, to renew the same policy I have to pay the 'unoccupied' rate, despite the fact that the period between renewal and 9 January added to the unoccupied time under the 'old' policy is within 60 days.

But I am having to pay the 'unoccupied' rate between renewal and occcupnacy on 9 January. I have to call the insurer on 9 January to advise occupancy and will then be refunded the difference between the occupied and unoccupied rate between 9 January and expiry in December 2019.

What is even more stupid is that 'the computer' can't record at renewal that the property will be occupied on 9 January. And I will be charged an 'administration fee' of £25 when I tell them on 9 January what they already know........!!

Frustrating.

Then simply do not renew it until the 9th !
We have had no house insurance of any kind since 1998....

I'm with John. Don't even give them the chance to 'revise' their renewal premium. Just cancel/lapse and go elsewhere.
Its funny that it tends to be the same 2-3 companies that ping-pong with the best new premiums.
