today I spent some time in an elderly lady's house doing some odd jobs for her;

- replaced her Sky+ box as the old one was playing up
- balanced her central heating system as she had two cold radiators (new boiler 'fitted' recently)
- replaced a roller in her garage door
- insulated some pipework in her attic (new boiler 'fitted' recently)
- replaced a faulty dimmer switch
- isolated and insulated her three (yes I said three) outside taps
- fixed the door on her electricity meter cupboard
- hung a bifold door in her kitchen
- put her built in washing machine back in its right place so the cupboard door would shut properly

All of the materials for above were sourced and paid for by me, a not inconsiderable task, although she did reimburse me for all of it.

I was and am not asking or expecting thanks, I am happy to help, but I really didn't want to hear her keep wittering on about how wonderful her two sons and two daughters are, all of who live within an hours drive.

Make sure you look after your parents if you are lucky enough for them to still be around.:bash:

Got that effect with my 93 year old mother in law who still lives in her old family home.
When we visit several times a year (180 mile drive each way) there is usually a list of jobs for me to do.

Last time : replace dimmer switch with standard switch, replace 3 old compact fluorescent bulbs with LEDs that actually make some light, replace 2 yellowed shades with new, install key safe by the front door for the benefit of the District Nurses ....

And yet her other daughter and son in law live 10 miles away !

My 90 year old mother in law lives just round the corner from us and we make sure she is well looked after. The mrs brother is a good bloke, lives a couple of hours drive away and visits a lot. He always asks 'are there any jobs you want doing while I am here?' and she always says 'no'. Seems odd that I do an awful lot of jobs for her. I really don't mind doing them, but it does seem a bit, er, well, odd.

I think Mrs Andybirdless is going to go mental if she ever reads the title and first post of this thread.
