Multigrade oils like 20/50 behave differently at different temperatures.
A straight 50 would behave the same i.e. have the same properties of viscosity etc. throughout the temperature range of the working engine.
A 20/50 behaves like a 20 (thinner, less viscous) at lower temperatues for beter flow and lubrication and then "thicken up" to behave like a 50 (thicker, more viscous) at higher working temperatures.
This aside, as we all know EP90 is gearbox oil with totally different properties from engine oil. Gearboxes are not subjected to the higher temperatures that internal combustion engines are.
Nobody in their right mind would use a gearbox oil in their engines and certainly not in a modern engine. Only if you were absolutely desperate in the middle of the Russian Steppe with no alternative lubrication.
Please come clean Punchy and admit that you have made a mistake with your line of thinking and understanding of motorcycles/engines. I am concerned that you will damage your engines and suffer expensive consequences

Just trying to help Supa'

We all make mistakes, although sometimes we don't like to admit it.

When help or advice is offered, one does not have to accept it, although informed choice is preferable to ignorant choice.

I genuinely wouldn't like someone to have a mishap in whatever form if I could help them to avoid it.

This isn't meant to sound "holier than thou". I am no better than anyone else.
I would like to think that I would accept having the error of my ways pointed out, to prevent me from perpetuating wrong headedness.

<This thread's getting far too serious all of a sudden>

OK
anyone tried putting a Norton Atlas engine in the BB frame?
and what gearbox/primary drive would you recommend?

Norton didnt make a unit construction engine in the big twins. Thought you would have known that. Thats why I asked which gearbox and primary drive were recommended. You cant have a unit construction with seperate primary and gearbox.
Kin ell did your dad not teach you anything!!!!!

<Sorry, another wind-up I'm afraid. Yes, I was well aware that the Atlas was never made in unit construction>

Its only a wind up when the other party doesnt know the facts!!!

Actually yes EP90 is the recommended gearbox oil on the Atlas as is a straight 50 oil for the engine. A 20/50 pisses through the geared oil pump hence the need for a straight oil which maintains its viscosity when cold. That would be an excellent game for a BB challenge 'start the Norton' because once the sods wet sumped its a bastid.

The Clue Here Is.............

Look in the Coffee Shop....Sam's thread on 'user's with 2 or 3 forum names'.

Punchy's last reply was "Oil have to think about this"..... a large hint that it's a forum regular !!!!!!!

Come on.....SHOW YA-SELF !!!!!!!!!!:f

Well Clive................

Doc Savage is in Monza (I think) with FB and crew, so I don't think it's him.

BlackKnight hasn't been around recently...he had an initial rush of posting and then vanished....... could this be BK with a new user name that we're dealing with now ? (But the writing style is totally different)

If Samster has a way of looking at posters IP's then I feel a e-mail to Sam coming on !!!!!:h
