Nurburgring & Beyond?

Off to Germany in July on the overnight Hull to Rotterdam ferry, there are 5 of us going and we intend to go down to the ring and then a couple of days down around the Black Forest region, only going to have about 4 days, so can anyone recommend any routes/places after the ring?

If you like World War 2 history there is an interesting museum on the west bank of the Rhine at Remagen, literally in what's left of the famous bridge. The castle at Burg Eltz is supposed to be good, and you could also go up to Cologne for the cathedral.

I have a route planned around the area from a trip my brother and I did a few years ago. Part of it was following the road along the Mosel, from Koblenz to Cochem, but it really was so dull, that we picked out a new route using a Michelin map whilst stopped for lunch at an Imbiss. Picked out a couple of waypoints for the GPS and we had a great afternoon's ride back up into the hills :-0)

Here it is anyway, in case it's any use to you.

Like he says

visit Cochem, just south of the ring. Beautiful. Roads around the eifel mountains are superb and many lovely places along the rivers.

The road down the valleyside into Cochem will have you giggling out loud it's just as if it was made for motorbikes, then from Cochem down the Moselle valley to Alf is wonderful; fast sweeping bends for mile after mile. The road from Alf, west and upwards towards The 'Ring..that too is fekkin ace. In fact owt in that area will have you salivating.

Howard, heres a screenie of where we go in the area as well.
Follow the river down to Rudesheim, great place to stay, plenty of hotels, bars eateries etc .. and just as everyone else says @tu*
Our route goes from the tunnel but the end result is the same...

Were going back end of July time :yo:

Trier on the north side of the black forest is a nice historic town/city to stop off and have lunch/a look around. Ended up spending 3 days near there last year when I lost my bike keys on the first day of a 10 day trip....Doh!

I use a combindation of bestbikingroads.com and google maps when planning routes.

I've got an excel file containing maps, distances and times of the german leg of the last trip I did which I could email you if you want.

Cheers

Andy

As peeps have said, the Mosel valley has superb roads and scenery. Could also do the Rhine valley, from Koblenz down.

When you are at the 'ring, if you want, give me a shout (I only live 6 kms from the ring), and could look out some routes for you.........

Hi Bodmin, on a side note where was that photo taken. I'll compare the photo tomorrow on my work PC but I'm sure I've got a pic that looks like it could be from the same spot.

Is it somewhere around the annweiler or gaggenau area?

It is between Daun and Manderscheid, just by the volcanic lakes

just one thing to avoid - the awful road between Belgium into the top of Germany - place is Eupen I think - never driven on such a terrible trunk road - like something out of a bram stoker novel, foggy cold driving through a wood most of the way and impossible to do more than about 20 MPH due to the terrible surface.

However -
Roads around the Black Forest are amazing - the ring is special too - I went with a couple of ex-racers who told me the tricks like dropping tyre pressures to about 25 due to the heat build up.

Found this route guide on the web.

That used to be known as the Road from Hell and I nearly bounced off the road in my car on the way back from my first 'ring trip on it.

On my last trip (admittedly about 5 few years back) it had all been resurfaced.
