Regarding the question what caused the off, if there was no apparent reason perhaps this may be a possibility
On my journey home from work there is a left hand bend on a downward road with a slight camber sometimes on taking this left hander my back wheel has jumped slightly
when it rains there is a prominent bump evident on this bit of road which you cannot see when the road is dry, I have figured out that the jump that I feel is when the edge of the tyre catches this bump. as Rhino says there is always a reason, however knowing the reason is a different matter.
