New Thumbnail System

I have now installed the new thumbnail system and rebuilt all the existing posts so that they use it.

What this means is that when you attach a picture now, the forum software will automatically generate a thumbnail, or mini picture (clever huh?), and attach that to the post in the thread. Then, a member reading the post can click any thumbnail he or she is interested in and the full size picture of it will be displayed. The advantage of this is that threads with lots of pictures on, like those following a big ride-out, will load much faster as you will only load the thumbnails, not the full-sized picture unless you choose to click on one. Also, when you return to a thread, you do not have to wait for all the pictures you have already seen to load again just in order to get to the new one at the end that you haven't seen. If the attached picture is already smaller than a thumbnail, it will just attach it in the normal way. Below is an example, but the entire forum has been converted now so you can see the system working in any previous post.

Brilliant Keith - that's the killer new feature we've been waiting for!

Yesterday I created a thread, "All 4 litre bikes reviewed"........I linked to 4 pics using IMG tags - the post previewed perfectly, and stayed up fine for about an hour but then all of a sudden just displayed the dreaded red crosses.........any ideas why?

So are you fully recovered now mate?

Fantastic

Brill, even though I have broadband, to have the choice to see the bigger picture if I want to is a great option. This way now we can Wiz (forgive the pun) through a chain without having to have loads of large images taking up screen space.

Well done Wiz, you live up to your name once again.

Clive - clicking the thumb will open the image in another window true size..............I'm presuming this means we can post decent resolution images this way and not be limited to the 700x2500 or whatever it was before?

Wow, loads of stuff on here so I?ll try to cover it all?.

Samster ? I checked your post and the reason they do not show is because you have referenced them to an online picture database that has copy protection software running designed specifically to stop people linking to pictures in that way. This is to stop people linking graphics on very busy sites to their server and thus hiking up their bandwidth charges. I?ve fixed your post for you by uploading the pics onto our server.

As for my recovery ? I passed a major milestone last Wednesday when I had an x-ray and was told that the bone graft has taken. This is what I?ve been waiting to hear for the best part of a year, because now I finally know for sure that I?m going to keep my leg and it?s only a matter of time before I?m walking unaided. I?m going back to hospital next Wednesday and they are going to take all the bolts out and remove the fixator, then it?ll really feel like I?m out of the woods :-:

Codbasher ? Don?t say that m8, no one with think I?m real anymore :neenaw:

Clive - 'fraid not m8. at the moment it can only be done universally because it forms an integral part of the way the way the thread is retrieved from the MySQL database, it?s not part of the display options. It might be possible in future releases of vBulletin, but it?s too big a hack for me to attempt and even if I did, it would make future upgrades a nightmare. I can offer you some good news though, I've fixed the ?Moving Smilie? problem. :yo:

Lumpy ? I?ve changed the res to allow pics of 800 x 600. I think that really is quite big enough as some people still have 14? screens running at that res and in their case, pics that big will fill their entire screen.

Wiz - thanks for sorting my post - I understand what happened..........

So it's roll on next Wednesday then eh! Brilliant news - chuffed for you mate, hasn't the year flown by? Doesn't seem that long ago that you had your accident.............give us an update after next Wednesday....... :yo:

I wasn't moaning about the 700x2500 limit - it's more than enough for web use..........

Cheers.............Sam

The thumb system is really impressive. I want to know how it's done too.

I spotted a cosmetic problem viewing with Mozilla (Firefox 0.8) as shown below:
Internet Explorer 6:

Firefox 0.8

It doesn't stop them working, just the tooltips look weird.

(Just realised the same thing hovering over some thread titles too)

I can't see !

I cannot view thumbnails, nothing appears in the box under neath the thumbnail title.
I run Zone alarm and have tried altering a few settings with no luck, any idea what I should try next?

Cheers Bert

Just tried that, but it seems to be selective, it allows me to view certain thumbnails but not others, I'll try altering other settings to see if that has any effect.
