New test! Viper front Azaro rear (un bias)

A lot of people have already asked about fitting the Viper front with the Azaro rear?

Excellent grip on the front, superb wear on the rear, what more could you want?

So I tried it and NO DON'T DO IT!!

Felt ok at first, low speed, just pottering about, fine! Started to pick the pace up a bit and at steep lean angles the bike started tipping in, not an ideal thing to happen once you are already lent over.

Last thing I did to try and upset things was braking hard whilst lent over, this caused the bike to sit up sharply but only for about half the lean angle, then it went completely neutral, just as your putting the input in to counter the up stand.

Please remember, this did happen whilst the tyre was under duress and these symptoms would not normally be noticed under normal riding conditions. But the profiles are NOT compatible.

Another life on the line test, brought to you by Blackbird Spares

 Another good thread pete  I find the dunlop on the front does has the same effect when braking in corners, Allthough it does not go neutral and once you have got over the initial standup you can get the bike back down, That is as long as your not picking yourself up from a wall or a hedge. %$fan

Just an observation, but why the feck are you braking in corners, are you just testing ? Dangerous work! Most bikes will sit up and run on if you brake mid corner. Nowt to do with tyres thats the geometrics of the bike. :t

Pete,

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Like qiuite a few peeps here I'm on an Azaro Sport SP-AV49 B front and a Touring ST-AV50 B rear the stratagy bieng that they should wear out together and if I find I'm on dodgy tarmac the back will let me know before the front.

However, I've just found out that Avon don't recommend this combo at all :xm

I was wondering if you had ever teseted this combination in the same way?

nice report Pete, but surely you'll upset any bike/tyre combo if you brake hard whilst lent over?

In order to test these tyres to the full I have to do a lot of stupid things :loo: But I would rather I find out what happens in all situations instead of telling everyone, "there fine, you wont have any problems with these puppies!"
The geometry on bikes can vary quite a bit, if I were riding a Kawasaki for example I would expect it to stand up! But the Bird can usually be braked very hard around bends without showing a great tendency to stand up. The fork 'rake' or caster angle is quite wide and "lazy", this slows the steering and stops it shaking it's head or tipping in, and standing up under braking.
This does have a lot to do with tyres. When the bike is lent over, if the two profiles don't match, this will make the front wheel track a different line to the one it should be on, therefore altering the geometry whilst the bike is lent over. Sorry this is very hard to explain in words Jono, when we next meet I will try and explain it better.

"nice report Pete, but surely you'll upset any bike/tyre combo if you brake hard whilst lent over?"

Yes Joe you will, but generally the Bird is very neutral, even when you do odd things like this! But put this tyre combo on and it's no longer so forgiving.

Pete, but surely this has more to do with the linked brakes than geometry & the rake angel? :dunno:

Fair play to pete i say.

he wont let us be led up the garden path , ( some traders would) and will test to the extreme tyre combos for our benefit

020's again for me next time

Orms is right, my bike is de-linked! But wether they are linked or de-linked Blackbirds do not generaly have a habit of standing up mid courner, but with this combo on they do :dunno:

Is this the one with the SP1 front end and Ohlins rear too?

Not that it should make any difference to the tyre profile but yes, the first test's were done on my show bike. This is still running almost identicle geometry to a standard Blackbird, but a lot stiffer and taller, this should only Help show any problems better.

As I said in my other post, this is my own peronal findings, if you feel this or some other tyre or bike combination suits the way you ride, or your personal needs or tastes, then go for it! :dunno:

it's true!! el Chinky Minky wasnt "hanging about" two up or not, the bike didnt seem to skip a bit, as I also have the Vipers on I can also testify to the levels of grip they offered on sunday,
