New owner - No readings on dash

Good afternoon All,

Finally picked up my first Blackbird (CBR1100XX-6) on Saturday and thought I would join this fine forum on the advice from John at JAWS.

I've been without a bike for around 3 years, previously I had a CBR1000F and loved it but sold it due to lack of use (And regretted it!!). The kids are now older so the Blackbird was purchased as it's the newer, improved version of my old bike.

Unfortunately, when I picked my bike up somebody forgot to tighten the positive terminal on the battery. This resulted in "surging" power at steady speed and after a mile or 2 the dash went blank. I finally managed to get to a service station to stop and have a look and this is when I discovered the loose terminal.

Once this was tightened the bike ran smoothly but the dash did not come back on, and hasn't done since. I have checked all the fuses that I could find (Tested them with multi-meter too) and all were fine. I removed the dash and checked the plug for damage (no signs of anything untoward) I then stripped the dash down and inspected the circuit board for signs of damage but that looked perfect too.

I have searched the internet for answers but found nothing yet. The bike runs well, all the main lights work, all the dash warning lights work and the LCD screens are still back-lit. The only bits that are not working is the readings for fuel/speed/temp/clock and rev counter. As far as I can tell everything else on the bike works as it should.

Does anyone know what the issue could be? I'm guessing the on/off/on/off of the loose terminal has done damage somewhere but I have no idea where (I would have thought the fuse would have blown before any damage was done to the instruments ect)

And assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ajeman

Hiya mate and welcome to the forum.. Sorry I could be no real help but hopefully someone on here will be able to help
If there is anyone in the Leicester area who has a digi dash model perhaps a meet up and a swap of dash as a tester could be sorted out ?

Hi Jaws,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as working on bikes is all a bit new to me (My other hobby is Land Rovers, slightly bigger and simpler. And I don't think I need such a large selection of hammers for working on the bike!)

Regards,

Hi all,

After a look over the bike and some research on the net I think the issue is either an internal fault on the dash or the ECU.

Is there anyone in the Loughborough/Leicester/Melton Mowbray area (Or somewhere close) that wouldn't mind me trying their dash on my bike?

If it works then it's the dash, if it doesn't then I'm looking at an ecu issue (but I'm leaning towards it being a dash issue)

I can arrange for beers/doughnuts/curlywerlies to be provided for compensation :lick:

Many thanks,

Ajeman

I am not trying to scam you or be funny but, I have sent some other parts to people in the past as ' a try it and see if it works basis' and either have not received payment or the damaged part has been sent back to me.

Hi all,

Big thanks to Taffy, the clocks arrived today and work perfectly. (Thankfully as if they didn't it would have been an ecu ussue).

I'll speak to the garage tomorrow and see about getting the originals fixed.

Many thanks for all your advise and especially Taffy and Jaws.

Hi All,

As an update, I had a call from the garage last night and they have had my clocks checked by an electronics guy and have been deemed un-repairable.

Apparently the transformer that drops the voltage down from 12v to around 5v for the readouts has blown and cant be replaced. Thankfully they are sending me a cheque for the set Taffy supplied so all's well that ends well.

Many thanks Taffy for your help.

Regards,

Ajeman
