New Leathers

Ok, I've been thinking about getting some new leathers for the new season and I'm looking to see whats the best sort to get, so opinions are requested !

I have a problem wiv me body (just one !) where my right arm is a damn sight bigger than my left (for any doctors out there it's Lymphodemia) which basically means I can't get 'off the shelf' leathers. In the past I've got 'normal' ones then got the right arm altered, but I've been thinking about getting made to measure ones for a change (i.e. like the first time in over 30 years of riding !) and I've also seen soemthing saying Kangaroo leathers are good ??

I could do a net surf but if anyone has had a set (I'm gonna go for 2 piece instead of my usual 1 piece) made up somewhere that you could recommend I'd be grateful of pointers.

Thank's awfully !!

excellant gear and very well priced for made to measure
Might be a bit awkward for you to get down to the factory to get measured though ?

in my opinion

there is only one to go for and thats MJK leathers, you can't beat them for everyday comfort and protection.

well worth it IMHO. You don't necessarily have to go down the MTM route though. Mine was off the peg.

Mind you the person that made them off the peg to fit DS was sacked later that day

Theres loads of good leathers out there and I supply the very best to retailers, but wont say who. OK then, Joe Rocket. Kangaroo is supposed to be very good, lighter than leather and possibly more abrasion resistant. However, it doesnt breathe as well as cow leather, so you may get very sweaty, or look ar perforated instead, although with the Scottish weather may not be such a good idea.

So then Aidey, who sells the perforated kangeroo ones, come on, spill the beans !!
I've got perfortated coo at the mooment and it's ok but I believe the roo leathers are more flexible as well as being good for abrasion, I know Scotland aint the hottest place, but when we tour, usually in jolly old England and Ireland, the last 2 years have been damn hot, well for me anyway. It may be that we've got used to the cooler weather up here since we emigrated from Englandshire, but I just find the Shoei's I have now aren't a very good fit and are too stiss missus !

Whats the general preference between 1 and 2 piece leathers ? I've only ever had 1 piece but am contemplating 2 piece for practicality, any thoughts ???

i have never owned 1 piece leathers so i cant really comment from a personal point of view but when i have been for a run with a m8 who has one piece when we stop for food/pint etc. he either has to keep them on or have the top half flapping about his arse and all i need to do is unzip the full length zip and take my jacket off. sam thing if it is a scorching day ( rare up here i know 8ree! but Braemar is sometimes hotter than spain :dunno: )

and i would imagine it you are in a crash bad enough to burst the zip between jacket and jeans you would be pretty much fucked anyway :dunno:

On the road two piece are safer and more practical.

People who have read my articles in various publications and on other forums will be along to explain I am sure )if they frequent this forum), because I am certainly not writing out extracts of a 20,000 word report I did for a major safety body all over again. :bang:

By the way, Kangaroo is tougher than cowhide, it is lighter and much cooler so it really is more a summer material than all year round, but beware as it reacts badly with sweat and therefore has to be specialy treated in the tanning process. It is not disimilar to Goatskin which is also tougher than cowhide, but like Kangaroo is much more supple due to the closed nature of the fibres, this in turn causes it to stretch quite quickly and may need to be tailored every couple of tears to ensure that the fit is maintained.

Thanks for that TC and Al, I think I've got an idea what I want now, glad the info came from someone who obviously knows becasue I've heard all sorts of different stories, so it's good to get it from the horses mouth, in the nicest possible sense of course !!

cheers guys

Issue 7 (I think it was) of Motorcycle Voyager and Motorcycle News sometime around July 2000.

The main body of the report is not for general consumption just for those who have a vested interest and who I know and trust as at the moment it is an ongoing investigation into all PPE. :dunno:

Sorry Russ, cant for the life of me think who does perforated kangaroo suits. Maybe Arlen Ness? I have a feeling that kangaroo is going to be a bit of a fad, and in a few years time wont be seen at all. The company I work for also supply Daytona boots (NOT Tonys of Prestatyn - who have retired) and some of their race boots are kangaroo. They have a very dry, parchment like feel to them and feel to my mind anyway, a bit "alien". I agree with TC, 2 piece suits are better suited to the road rider, rather than the road racer. Single piece suits are OK if all you want to do is get on the bike and ride, but if you want to go somewhere, get off, look around etc, then the 2 piece gives more flexibility.
PS If you fancy trying a Joe Rocket suit, let me know your size and I will arrange it with my Colleague in Scotland for you. There is a GPX suit in 1 and 2 piece at 499 and the Speedmaster 1 piece at 799. The Speedmaster was worn by Steve Plater, Gary Mason and Christopher Hill in BSB and by Steve Parrish when he was testing out World Superbikes for the BBC. It is heavy though, being of 1.7 mm leather throughout, but comforting to know that your arse is sliding along on something substantial if the worst happens!

Cheers Aidey, I'm not set on Kangeroo just thought I'd have a look but I think I'm gonna get a 2 piece anyway cos I've had 1 piece's for as long as I can remember and they just aint practical like Al says, I've gone through all that and they really can be a pain.
The Joe Rocket suits look ok to me, just the same old problem with getting someone who can alter them to fit my weird body !
I've tried a few different 'stitchers' but all they do with the sleeve is put an extra piece in so it's not properly fitted, just bigger and usually too big, so I really need someone to get a hold of me (ooo eerr missus!) and do a proper measure up, not necessarily the whole body but definately the right arm.
So if anyone knows of any decent companies who alter leathers propely I'd be grateful if you'd let me know.

The people we use are nine lives in Guildford. I know its a long way from you, but its not from us. Its possible to send a suit there and send it on to your local dealer. There no. is 01483 454441, may be worth a call? :dunno:
Some of the usual suspects on here may have already used them so no doubt will pipe up soon.
Do you def want 2 piece matching leathers or would a mix and match do? you may find what youre looking for down that route. Joe Rocket are launching a new jacket next month called the Sonic. Bit of a looser fit all round (for Yank lard arses) and may now be on their web site. www.Joe Rocket.com
