New Blackbird required...

Well after I binned my blackbird a couple of weeks ago, I've just sent off acceptance of the insurance companies offer (not bad too!) so should get the dosh soon for a replacement... which leads me on to - what do you think about...

A local guy is selling his 2001 (Y reg - pre cat converter) black blackie with 16000 on the clock, FSH, in very good nick and he sounds like he really looks after his bikes (he has several) after a chat on the phone this evening.
It has D-B screen, hugger, mushrooms, etc.
Its just had timing chain done, head race bearings and new chain & sproc recently, tyres in good order.
No damage other than light wear and tear for its age.
He wants ?4650...???

Off to look at it tomorrow... should I be interested?

Presume he means cam chain...... at 16,000 miles??? It shouldn't be needing a cam chain at that mileage. That's even a bit premature for the can chain tensioner I think :dunno:

PP do not buy this bike.. harsh words follow I am afraid mate..
It has been ragged to bits mate.. Any 2001 Bird requiring the level of work this one has had is, quite frankly nothing short of a liability..

The chain and sprockets should not be worn out, the Cam chain is good for at least 100, 000 miles of normal use, the head race bearings going so early indicate the thing has been wheelied ( and wheelied badly ) often and repeatedly .. No mate.. either the guy is a lying twot in which case the bike should be avoided, or the bike is a fookin heap of shite and should be avoided..

The only other possible thing I can think of is that the present owner is amazingly gullible and rich and the dealers have been telling him this and that needs doing when it dont !!

You probably wouldn't have wanted a Bird in your youth, as the youth of today tend to regard it as an old mans bike, because it isn't a fireblade or an R1 to a youth Blackbird conjurs up thoughts of a medium sized bird with a yellow beak eating worms

And as to the last question..
If all that work had not been needed and it was tidy then yes, the lolly would be about right..

But as it stands, I would not want to be paying more than 42 for the thing.. In fact I would not entertain it at all mate.. sorry

I am highly delighted with it mate, and we all have the banter about colour, but at the end of the day a Blackbird is a Blackbird and if it brings a grin to your chops then that's what it is all about.

I didn't think 16K miles sounded right for the cam chain to be needing doing...

Cheers Jaws,

He has had it from new apparently, so yeah, thats alot of stuff to go wrong isnt it.
He also said its just had a service at 15000, to which I asked why it wasnt done at 16000, to which he said his haynes manual says 18000 for the next service. Either way, sounds odd too!

As you say, I may just have to skip this one.

Oh and Av8tor, thanks for the info, but I think Falkirk is a bit far to go from southampton. I'll pass on that one thanks. :)
