Well have just gone to our yearly South African Motorcycle show, and with disguist found out that Honda is loking at upgrading the Blackbird. They will ultimately replace the current Bird with a VFR1200 junkie....

You can view pics and info with regards to this here..
http://www.motorcyclenews.com/nav?page=motorcyclenews.articles.articleCategory.article&resourceId=1166298&articleCategory=NEWS_NEW-BIKES

The desision is still not final, but this is what the one option would look like.
They are still wondering and debating about an upgrade to the cbr range in stead of going the vfr route.

Well all that I can say is that even with all the claimed increases and the new V5 motor, it is still not going to run away from my current 2002 model.

With a few adjustments and replacements of parts I've managed to increase the output to 189 HP on the rear wheel. This is confirmed throught a Dyno run done by a reputable company in SA.

Not that there was ever anything wrong with the stock Bird, I just wanted to know what could be done.

Top speed - as per police radar scanner - 360 KM per Hour. Please note that this was achieved over a 2 KM straight from a dead start.

I am sure that there is plenty left, but our roads do not really allow for these speeds, and the racetrack is simply just to short.

Well now I would like to see what the new VFR1200 would be capable of, I've just placed the old Bird on par with the potentially new one...

1200cc against 1200cc with approx. the same dry weight.
The only thing that is a bit better is the usage of 2 Yoshi Tri-Oval Cans, this was to try and get up to the same BHP as the new VFR1200 - 190

We did come close with 189 - Some fancy custom work was done to lighten the bird, without loosing any of the characteristix.

The old one in my opinion is still better and by far quicker that we think the new VFR Might be. Would liek to put these 2 next to each other on a straight. Afterall these werent made for racetracks, but rather interception.

Wow!

Please post on here what must be a huge list of modifications you've made to this thing!

360kph over 2km from a standing start - that's just amazing! 360kph is almost 224mph! - your bike is faster in a straight line than even a full factory Honda GP bike! :yo: And it's verified by police radar!

You must have spent a fortune on mods.

What have you done aside from adding some end cans to get 189 rwhp?

Can't wait to hear more

I recall a similar thread about a vfr/cbr1100 replacment back on the VFR forum , last year . With the same link to the MCN story too !

I guess they will do something, but merge the two 'genres'? As I'm just about to take delivery of a new BB, its a question I asked several dealers around the south east . . . naturally they were all adamant Honda has no such plans, which kind of makes you . . .:dunno: sceptical ?

Who knows . . .

360kph in 2km???? c7u8
The only Bird to weigh less than a CRF450, with the aerodynamics of Concorde, and the power of a nitrous fed F1 car!
The drag set may be intersted to see this one!

Cmon chaps,!! lets just allow that things "may" have been lost in the translation!!! :dunno:

conversions? kmh to mph?

Not wishing to be a smart arse but isn't it 1.67 Km to the mile? making the guys claim of 360 kmh around 215.57 mph?

Not only that but we all know police radars are prone to giving false readings GPS on the machine is about the best most available method of clocking top end

Cheers:blush:

Erwin, dunno what conversion you're using but I still reckon his claim is 224mph.........

360 kilometer/hour = 223.6936292 mile/hour (mph)

How a blackbird achieves this with 189bhp, whilst a GP bike can't with close to 250bhp I'll never know......

could be that the blackbirds claimed drag co-efficency [?] is the same as the 250 gp bike and the v5 is as aero-dynamic as a brick

After reading the post off arcticflipper,:xm shit i dont know.

By doing some researh off the "new v5 1200 Black Bird i came to the conclusion
thats its only a dream story. Dont know if it will ever be launched.
Some off the blokes here in Cape Town riding Aprilia's, Suzuki's ect all were waiting for this new flag ship off Honda, cause they could not wait, one off them riding with us bought him self the new BMW K1200S.
One Sunday the two off us went for a ride, cause Beemer wants to show off with its powerfull bike against the Bird:bow: At first we went just cruising and after 50 odd km we swopped bikes. Wasnt impressed with the k12, felt like sitting on a Harley and got out off it( only top speed off 280 km/ph) although it had a lot off midrange power. When we swopped bikes back again Brian want to race.
He asked that we went down to 5th gear at 220 km/ph and then accelerate, beemer pulled away from me for at most 5 bike lengthes but after 280 km/ph i
passed him with the Bird going for 300 km/ph.
So here the story, after that he went telling every one that he beat the Bird by far.
So here the reason for the story. My Bird fitted with Dyno Jet Power Commander, full Acropovic pipe and K&N air filter pushed out 153bhp at the back wheel and 120nm, and doing on a nice day top speed off about 320km/ph. I now went and put Nitrous ( Sneeky Pete ) on it and pushed out 174bhp and 140nm with in 6 seconds, tried it and was doing about 330km/ph from 280km/ph in 4-6 seconds. I was amazed by this kind off power by just fitting the NOS, not even intrested in the new V5 Bird.
Even the K1200S can go for an hike now.
But after reading flipper story now:bang:
I dont know:xm

Quite right. Plod once clocked me at 84 mph on the M4, when I was only about 68 mph. I know this to be true, because I never, ever, exceed the speed limit - especially on a virtually empty motorway at 10 o'clock on a quiet Sunday morning.....
