We’ve been looking for quite a while for another pup as a companion for Twatbag. The last one, two years ago, went horribly wrong so this one was a bit of a process. We found what seemed to be a good fit, again at Cardiff Dog’s Home, a little Staffy/Shar Pei cross, called Narla (f’ing awful name, which was immediately drop-kicked). She’s suffered the most shocking abuse; caged from the get go and and as soon as she was old enough she was used as a puppy machine and bred to death.

She’s suffered severe malnutrition, zero exercise and no treatment for any of her ailments. Her left ear is like that of a tight head prop from infection after infection being left untreated. She has a penchant for eating shit, most likely because she was starved and had to resort to eating her own; I can’t be sure but it would make sense given she’s so emaciated. When she came to live with us she was 19.5kg and she’s now almost 21kg. She should be around the 25/26kg mark but our vet has said that at six years old, she’s unlikely to put on a huge amount more weight, because she’s been constantly starved and has had no exercise. As a result, she has pitiful muscle mass. She didn’t have the strength to hold her paw up when we were training her and she ran like a spaz because she didn’t have the muscle or strength to control her legs proper.

I’d love to meet some people in a dark alley, I really would.

She’s been with us since the first week of August and we officially adopted her on 26th August. She was house trained insofar as she doesn’t dirty inside the house and she’s not destructive.

She was very wary of other people and most dogs but she’s almost out of her shell now. She no longer reacts aggressively towards other dogs and we walk her off the lead. Her recall is superb although she refuses to let go of her ball when she brings it back.

Gia kept her at a distance to begin with but now they’re almost inseparable. She gets put in her place by Gia if she steps over the line. The two of them are almost constantly play-fighting and they’re more than happy to share the same bed. All things considered, she’s remarkably well behaved, particularly considering her history.

Anyhoo, meet Beans. We can’t change her past but we can sort her future.

Serious respect from me. Taking in a new rescue dog with that background and settling it with an existing one is a massive task and requires huge patience.

You need any help down that dark alley you give me a shout. I'll still be slapping them until they snap the handcuffs on.

Of the 7 Newfies I had, 5 were rehomes. One had never been allowed to run free as a pup because the stupid owners couldn't handle such a large, boisterous puppy. Consequently he grew up with a weak heart, which required careful management as he loved to barrel around the fields with the other Newfs. He had no sense of his own momentum and spent a fair amount of his time running into and knocking over other dogs.
We named him Bomber.

Thanks, Tony.

Twatbag is well settled so we didn't think it would be easy with Beans, especially after the last one. She's gone from tolerating her to being besties. it's incredible how it's worked out.

I need some bouncing boobies back on my sig.

Beanbag is small but she's quite powerful for her size. Problem is, she barrels around outside at 100mph everywhere and she doesn't look where she's going. She's all but dislocated my knee couple of weeks ago when she blitzed out of a bush and hit me side on and last week she clattered me from behind and I went up in the air and came crashing down, quite unceremoniously, and landed on my derrière. in a puddle of mud.
