NAVMAN 520

RHINO

Answering to nobody
Just bought a 'NAVMAN 520' GPS with touch screen and post code facility..

So far it seems to knock spots off the QUEST, very very easy and clear to use with a simple power-up plug in socket and ear piece socket so i can connect it to my Autocom.
Some good deals around on it, well under ?300 for it and it has a better map with much bigger screen, writing and more POI.
I'll keep ya posted as to how i get along with it.

All i need to do now is rig up a mount for the bike and source a waterproof case/cover for it when on the bike.

Does anyone do a mobile phone with built in Sat Nav yet ??

parttimepilot

FJR and Bird Commander
Mobile sat nav.

Log on to www.dabs.com and search mobile phones.

They have a Nokia 7710 on contract with free Tom Tom sat nav. Apparently turns the phone into the sat nav unit.

The apprentice at work showed me his Nokia phone with Tom Tom sat nav on it. He bought a 512mb memory card for ?30, a Sat Nav reciever thingy for ?35 and a dodgy copy of the Tom Tom software off ebay for ?4.

We tried it in my Nokia 7610 and fook me it worked. Gotta be worth a look into me thinks.

I ran a Navman 520 on my KTM 950.

Got hold of an extension (cigarette lighter) socket, I think it was about ?7 from Maplins and then a splitter leaving you with two sockets ?3 approx (also from Maplin electonics).

Lop the plug end from the extension then split the twin (bonded) wire so that the + and - are far enough apart to link to your bike battery, place spade connectors on both of the wires and connect to the battery.

With the KTM it was easy 'cos I could then run the extension straight from the battery to the compartment which is situated on top of the tanks, you haven't got this on a sports bike so you'll have to improvise (maybe add a couple of quick release connectors that protrude slightly from the front of the seat), possibly run it to a tank bag.

I use this for my satnav, ipod and phone charger and have had no problems, AFAIK, as long as you do not mod the chargers themselves, they will regulate the voltage down from 12V, all you have to make sure of is that you cable tie the wires away from any hotspots e.g. coolant system, exhaust etc.

With regards to the water proofing, forget it !, from my experience it is close to impossible to secure that kind of device in torrential rain as it will attack from every angle and condensation will be a factor too. If used in light rain then it should be ok if shielded slightly by the screen, the airflow will keep the water away.

Best of luck.

Hi Rhino, how i got round keeping it 100% on the bike was carry it in map department in tank bag, put waterproof cover over the tank bag and it worked fine, ok you cant see the map but the voice direction, did its job,
hope that helps,
cheers

I used the NAVMAN last night in the car and it did a sterling job, within 2 doors of my address and considering it was a dashboard mount using its original antenna behind a heated screen in snowy conditions i think thats bloody good. :yo:

The truth will come today when i go out on a quick run in the car and see if the signal can keep up, the QUEST was about 500 feet behind at all times. man8um
