National whatever day

Yesterday teatime watching the telly I found out it was national fish and chip day, this morning I hear it's world gin day. Who comes up with this stuff and what purpose does it serve when the public find out too late to join in.

I would also like to see all the major cities have a “Heterosexual Pride” event for a weekend every summer.
