Taking out the back wheel to clean around the shock and underside of the seat. Flipping fiddly trying to get the wheel back in isnt it, I put a bit of copper grease on the axle and tightened up the axle bolt with a torque wrench. Its nice and clean now.

Now I await the comments on what I might have done wrong or forgotten to do !

copper grease could be abrasive to the seals,

did you clean the brake pistons while the wheel was out ???

adjusted the chain on the sidestand???

Like wot Wolfie said

Now get back in the garage and take the wheel out again, :bang: , cos you now know how. Wipe the axle clean and use ordinary grease. The copper particles in the copper based grease can be abrasive to bearings.

BlackbirdBAz,

1. Brave move on 6 mth old bbird (it took me 7 mths to finally remove the wheel.

2. Wolfie's right bout the copper grease - wipe the axle and use high melting point grease.

3.Clean the brake pistons using a spray can of brake cleaner (Halfords etc have em)
It's not difficult. Remove the small rubber cover that covers the pin bolt.
Use an allen key to remove the pin bolt (for some reason the haynes manual suggests removing the R/H exhaust can !!)
The pads then just pull out.
Spray the brake cleaner into the area - a toothbrush or bit of rag helps to clean off any crud.
Slide the pads back in (piston side first I found was easier) keeping them pushed up towards the top of the caliper - they shud then just slot inot the retaining lug - visual check to make sure.
Jobs Done!
It actually takes longer to type it that to do it.
You don't need really need to take the wheel out to clean the pistons (but its easier to make a better job of it when the wheel happens to be out).
:yo:

Just to put your mind at rest about the value of my contribution this is from someone who many, many years ago took the front wheel out of his Suzuki 380 triple and for some reason then pushed it off the centre stand.
Imagin the fun an amusment - every attempt to lift just resulted in the fork legs extending - how was it finally done ???

Did the same thing myself and got a bollocking off a tyre fitter who was also a biker when I went in for some new rubber. The Haynes manual does not mention copper grease at all in the recommended lubricants.

Thanks for all your input, much appreciated

I would urge you to use Corrosion Block.. It is pretty much the same price as normal grease but it is made for use on planes and meets all the very high spec that demands..
ACF-50 and Corrosion Block grease

Ahah !!! Barry, I gather that was you who ordered the 2 oz tube mate.. Sorry.. I had to return your lolly to you..

Been trying to get stock of the little tubes for ages ( in fact I still owe one to someone else who ordered it weeks ago thinking about it )..

I suspect the manufacturer has stopped doing the 2 oz tubes cos the 16oz pot is only ?7.29..

Sorry mate Baz...
